*I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*
like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
I'm a fellow Hue fan. This is one of the most concise, informative and professionally done unboxing videos for any tech product I've ever seen. Subscribed.
I just bought my first set of Philips Hue series (a Starter kit, Lightstrips and more light bulbs). But I still drool for these Play Bars. The light power is amazing, and they look... modern. They'd be fantastic on a PC-table. Too bad I blew already so much money on my set-up and these alone cost 129€/$ a pair. But I'll get them, some day I will... lol.
I’d love to see how this works with a TV and I’m curious if other lights on the network like a led light strip can be included into it to have a full room surround ambiance all working with the images from the tv
At the time of me writing this the only way that i am aware of to sync the TV content with your HUE lights without "Hue Sync" is if it is a Philips TV with "Ambilight" feature. The TV in itself has lights but can also as far as i know sync with other HUE lights in your setup. Check to be sure.
I ordered the 2pc lightbar + extension and the bridge after watching your video. I'm glad I did as I was considering the Corsair LT100/LS100s before watching your video. They are very expensive for ambient lights but you get what you pay for for the quality you get + the smart home apps support. I actually have a Logitech G560 which has light sync stereo speakers but they are just not bright or intensive enough.
Mind to provide a quick link to the background of your desktop please? And, awesome video. Missed some of your non-Apple product reviews and unboxings.
I love them - but I feel like they are more worth 2 for $80.00. Its a good product. Maybe if I have a need I'll try to pick them up at the price I mentioned.
I’m torn with Philips Hue lately. I’m glad that they really seem to be doubling down and releasing new hue lights but it feels like they could do a lot better. These don’t get anywhere near the brightness they should.
Philips is just now coming out with hue products that use bluetooth, for example, they have a standard bulb which now has bluetooth so you no longer need the bridge. I am not sure however which products have bluetooth. I think that the playbars do not but philips might me coming out with them, i am not sure.
Nice video as usual but there is no known HDMI adapter that I am aware of. I'm not even clear how that would work. I have 3 Hue Play lights in my current setup and there is no way I can think of that an HDMI adapter would ever come into play (pun intended). I have 10 lights in my entertainment area (3 Play, 2 Go, 1 Bloom, 1 Hue Signe Floor lamp, and 3 different lamps with standard Hue Color A19 bulbs). 6 of the lights are behind my TV or positioned on my TV stand. The only way to use Hue Sync is through a PC or Mac. I havent run into anything that doesnt work with streams via Chrome (Netflix, TH-cam, Playstation Vue etc.). However, most of what I use this setup for is my Plex server where I have ripped several live concerts. With Sonos surround sound (also playing in other rooms from TV stream) and Hue Sync running, its a concert lover's "couch tour" dream come true. I find it distracting for movies but terrific for live music performances. It's expensive but I have been adding to my Hue system for years (approaching 50 light limit of the hub). So consider that before ya judge me. ;-)
Ive been wondering it it can just be synced with tv apps like Netflix, Prime etc. Only via Mac or PC aye? That’s a shame. But if you do us Mac or PC to stream to TV then Play Sync works changing the colors? One more thing to have to do. Right? Guess I’m waiting til these can connect right to tv apps without the stream. Hey, If I’m wrong with my assessment let me know. Thanks!
Things to know before buying: - You need the hue bridge to run it (around 40$/€) - The hue bridge needs to be connected to Ethernet Rj-45 (yes, no wifi) - Don't buy the single lamp, it comes without the power adapter - The sync effect works only with a pc / in combination with a pc - It's overpriced (obiously), at least with these flaws - There was recently a version with a free hue bridge included
I think I was doing this in 2014 with Kodi ... before the LED strips and using the old, slower hub v1 which often guessed a color to use. And the old Gen1/2 bulbs didn't really handle green, blue or purple at all, due to the overdose of yellow and lack of blue LEDs. now that Qdot and SMD's exist, and perhaps capellix or similar filtered 'dot' SMD's, it might be cheaper to get a decent bar-type SMD with good RGB. Bias lighting tends to work as long as you don't see the source or shadowing IMO. 2 or 3 lights tends to work best, but it looks like you can add more with Play and strips adding to the ambient effect.
Whilst there are more features on these than the lightstrip, i find it quite distracting when the colours change constantly, enough to break immersion from the screen. I’ll stick to my adjustable light strip :)
Hey Mike, when are you gonna review the note 9? I'm really wanting that phone but since you are the best reviewer on TH-cam I wanna get your input on it 🙂
Except the thing you didn’t mention us the bars them self or $60 each and the power bridge that you have to use to turn on the bars are sold separately for $60
Love the Locutus Funko! I’ve got him guarding my cubicle at work, but my home desk has Commander Zavala from the game Destiny and Archangel from X-Men. Great review btw
Hmmm, I've been debating whether to get these or a light strip to go behind my TV. I know you mentioned earlier in the video that the strips fit better behind the TV but you also mentioned how these work much better than a light strip and has more dimensions to work with than a light strip and you don't have sticky marks on the back of the TV. I have a 70" on the wall but I am wondering if it's better to have these if I can get them behind as opposed to the strip so I'm unsure? I'd want two so I can have two different colours (one at the top, one at the bottom) at the same time. Thanks for such a fantastic and informative review 😊
Hello, do you know if its possible to have like 2 groups? Like 2 Play Lights for my Main PC Display and then 2 Play Lights for my TV when i sit on my Couch? So those two Groups are seperated? Or do i need to enable/disable the ones i dont use?!
In this video it looks like the light bars are changing colours with regards to what’s on the TV screen. However I’m under the impression that you need the HDMI adaptor in order to make that functionality work. If I bought just the two light bar kit Will it work that way or do I need the HDMI adaptor
Hey Mike great video as always! I just got a set of these last week and I love them except for the power connections. Since they have relatively short power cords and have to both plug into the power wall wart it can be tough to spread them out. Too bad Phillips didn't allow a daisy chain from light -> light. Also think they are a bit pricey but hue is the best lighting ecosystem and I'm already well invested in it!
They make a 16' extension cord. Yes - 16 FOOT. Currently out of stock most places but it is at least an option. Unless I am running the power through the wall, not sure I can see where 16' per light makes much sense..... but there you go. Part Number - 7820430U7
Wow looks great. Mike, do you think these are easily attachable to a Thunderbolt Display? This would be a perfect solution to my quest for a interesting light behind my screen.
Is there an option for a stand alone console set up yet? I run all my bluerays/ movies/ tv shows/ and games throguhy Xbox one hooked up to a 55" screen and pioneer 5.1 surround sound system. Being able to do this without adding a mini computer would be nice.
I was able to get this working by using the XBOX app on a PC, stream the XBox one screen to the PC so it is mirroring the tv, then run the hue sync app on the pc. it's a bit convoluted, but works great!

gotta love that LED flicker. They could have made these non-flickering given how many youtubers use these guys.
