If you have to ride on the sidewalk, just go really slow. I saw a biker accidentally hurt someone who came out a door unexpectedly really bad. If the biker had been going slow, he could've stopped.
If there is a bike path you must ride in it and not the sidewalk. If it's a major road you cannot ride in the street and must ride on the sidewalk. Those are the basics. If it's a two lane street one lane in each direction then a bike is considered a car and technically has full use of the lane but good luck not getting run over.

I used to walk those streets as a child, there was a DVD place right on slauson and Figueroa, they closed it few years back. Asian man owned it. I lived on 56th, middle school was John Muir Middle school (2002). 54th Street was crazy bro, never liked that street as a kid. Moved out of there soon as I graduated high school, (06) And that shopping plaza had our Kmart where we would go buy our clothes, I bought many n64 games.
