Changing fuel filter on small outboards

  • In this video I show how to change the fuel filter on a small outboard. If I am not mistaken, this process will be the same for outboards up to 20hp. There is a possibility that outboards bigger than that use a filer casing that is reusable and all you'll be changing is the filter inside. The process is similar to this.

    thank you! I just replaced the fuel filter on my tohatsu 9.8 HP and this video gave me the confidence to do it no problem.

    Thanks for the video. I have a Tohatsu 20 HP outboard. Pretty much the same process as yours, but mine is much harder to get to. The location on yours is great.

    is that tohatsu 9.8 hp? how often do you need to change the fuel filter?

      Under heavy use, around 200 hours or so, same as the impeller

    Hi! Does the arrow need to point away from the carburetor or towards the carburetor?

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Towards the carb. Just checked it.

      @@ErickMartinSucre I actually checked mines this morning and the arrow is facing away from the carb. Like the gas line comes into the motor housing, I followed the gas line and it goes into the fuel filter, arrow pointing away and then it goes into carb. recently bought a 5HP 2015 Tohatsu. It starts just fine. But I know that doesn’t mean is okay.

      @@abnergarcia6252 The arrow just points to the flow of the gas, but in reality, it'll still filter the gas either way.

      @@ErickMartinSucre do think going back with factory filter is best or can an Amazon brand do just fine?

    • @ErickMartinSucre

      These filters are generic for the most part. An Amazon one will do just fine.

      @ErickMartinSucre  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it can fit the hoses I don't see an issue with it. Make sure you don't get a filter that is too big.

    Is there a way to flush salt water out of a 6hp?

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I use a small squared trash bucket and I fill it with water half way and pour some bio degradable detergent like Dawn dish sopa or Simple Green. I made a video showing how it's done. th-cam.com/video/EHHLWiJmSCU/w-d-xo.html First part of the video goes over how to clean and flush the outboard.

    How often should you change the fuel filter and what are the signs that it’s going bad?

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fuel filter can easily last several years, depending how often is used. Most common cause of a dirty or clogged fuel filter is sluggish acceleration and sometimes random stalling.

    • @ErickMartinSucre

      Yeah, you probably could with like some brake cleaner. The main issue with that is the paper film inside, it deteriorates overtime and will need replacing regardless. Thankfully they are super cheap.

      @@ErickMartinSucre thank you for your expertise! Im new to outboards and im having Another issue with my new tohatsu 6hp, i used it few times on lakes and ocean and now at high rpm motor drops torque bogs down and continues to rev but not giving any power or propulsion, i thought it was spun propeller at first but after replacing it, nothing changed, motor stlill sputters at high rpms continues to rev but no propulsion forward :( i have no idea how to fix it, we have only 1 tohatsu dealer and theyre booked till february

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  ปีที่แล้ว

      That happens sometimes to me when I make quick turns. You Rev down and Rev up again and it goes away. This is caused by a pocket of air, if you want to prevent that from happening completely, a hydrofoil is needed.

    • @ia6980
      @ia6980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ErickMartinSucre it never did that initially, it def not normal, it started occuring recently, i cannot run it on full throttle because of this, if it is pockets of air then i wonder if lower shaft would help prevent that issue, since sometimes i feel like 15 inch is not low enough for saturn boats (even tho its recommended), i think 17inch shaft would do the trick, but they dont have those. Some say it can be a bad external fuel line, thats clogging up filter
