You can do this with all sorts of candies. I’ve done it with jolly ranchers, Hi-Chews, root beer barrels, candy canes, life savers, & Werther’s. I tried to use gummy bears………it did not go well. I think you have to stick to candy that’s hard & doesn’t have a liquid or chewy center. I wonder why he doesn’t just use the mini starburst they sell now? You can buy a large bag, you don’t have to unwrap them, and they’re already small so you don’t have to cut them. You’d obviously have to sort out the colors, but you have to do that with the regular sized ones too….and it’s a lot less annoying than unwrapping & cutting the regular ones.

The reason your texture is different has to do with the temperature you need to bring the candy slurry to before it's becomes the taffy-like texture we all know of when it comes to Starburst candy. Sugar and glucose syrup brought to and held at a much higher temperature would give you something hard, like a Jolly Rancher (Fun-Fact: smashed up Jolly Rancher candies makes even better cotton candy!!). If you want your final product to be soft and stretchy, you go with a much lower temperature.
It may also be noteworthy to mention that when the starburst cotton candy is eaten it turns back to the chewy starburst consistency instead of melting like regular cotton candy.
Jelly beans (of various brands), marshmallows, crushed up Jolly Ranchers (and other hard candies), Chewy Jolly Ranchers, Cow Tails, Tootsie rolls and Tootsie chews (the vanilla and fruit flavor ones). Pretty much any hard or chewy candies comprised mostly of sugar.

The starburst cotton candy isn't that fluffy because of the other ingredients in starburst that aren't pure sugar which is what makes real cotton candy fluffy. I have a miniature home cotton candy maker and am diabetic. As another commenter said, you can use sugar free hard candies. My personal favorite is werther's originals SF.

You can use sugar free hard candy thats been crushed up. Just dont eat too much or you'll have some unpleasant bathroom issues.

ethyl maltol is the most commonly used sugar derivative to make cotton candy.
Just about any candy that's ethyl maltol base will work.

A lot of red food dye is just cochineal which is 100% natural. It does come from crushed beetles however.

To make cotton candy from any other hard candy you're supposed to freeze dry it first then blend it into powder. Now you have a more usable sugar.
