Water Aliasing is a different occurrence than laminar flow, and we wanted to show the difference, in detail, with actual moving water examples.
Thanks to Destin from SmarterEveryDay for making a fun cameo :)

I'm glad we have someone that does not want to destroy the TKOR legacy but actually build upon it. We thank you Nate ❤
i ended up unsubing from tkor the new crew are honestly no good at all. To them it is just a job and they honestly do not care about that job and it shows.
@@nanaki-setothe new guy is taking it back to its roots
@@nanaki-seto when I found Nate it was the why I’m no longer on tkor and from then I subbed (even tho I knew of the channel beforehand I wasn’t interested in knife making) ended up unsubscribing from the tkor channel around the same time
@@nanaki-setoyeah, I unsubscribed, too. I was upset about the firing of Cali and subsequent dismissal of Nate, but it was more because the newer hosts were TERRIBLE. That girl (was her name Grace?) was beyond awful, to the point of being unwatchable. In the videos Nate was in with her before he left, you could see his discomfort around her on his face.
I’ve never gone back to watch another of the videos there. I don’t want those awful people running it to get a single cent of revenue from me.
@@lifebehindtheselens when you grow up you will regret saying terrible things like that. I hope you have at least the brains to not say that directly to his kids or wife. Why say it at all anywhere especially on the internet where it is possible his family will find it.
I literally cannot hear the words "laminar flow" without thinking of Destin, his cameo was excellent 🥰
"I like laminar flow!"
Yes, Destin.
We know.
And that's one of the things we appreciate about you.
I never knew his name was Destin until this video. I always thought it was Dustin. I’ve never even heard of anyone being named Destin before.
I agree.
Small correction for 5:45, it isn't only visible through a camera. You can achieve the same effect to the naked eye if you set this up with a strobe light set to the same frequency of the speaker.
...and the surroundings are dark enough to hide the water when the strobe goes out. Outside during Nate's sunny day wouldn't work so well with a strobe.
Another method, used by some of the first engineers to explore animation, involves viewing a scene through slits, to hide the time and image in-between what you want to show. They made wheels where there was a movie printed inside, with slits in-between so you could view the opposite side of the wheel as it spun. This flicker is essentially also how mechanical (film) video capture is made.
Or, just blink really fast…
@@RandomBogey Or by other effect that mimics a strobe light without actually using a strobe light. (You can often see this effect when looking at car tires through a picket fence.)
technically not visible through added trickery. since the strobe light mimics a changing "frame rate" to your eye
I said out loud, "because it's a balloon..." and then the crickets started chirping 😂
"why is the tape necessary"
Literally everyone who has played with balloons: 😐😐
Some people don't put things together that easily. It isn't obvious or something.
The power went out from a storm this winter and the neighbors came over because I have a wood burning stove. We are using candles, kerosene lamps and flashlights. One of the kids informed me all my outlets were broken because she couldn't charge her game/phone whatever it was. She is 8 or 9 so I can understand. Her mom though, told her it's probably one of those outlets you need to turn a light switch on to get working - keep in mind, they are here because the electricity in the entire neighborhood is out. But she then started flipping light switches for her. It just didn't connect fir whatever reason.
@@sumduma55 There are grown adults who can't understand why their desktop computer doesn't work when the power is out. Even people with higher educations who are incredibly smart in their field can be really, really dumb in other areas.

Nate is a class act by mentioning TKOR like that❤
And even directing the viewer to the TKOR channel! They're trying to get back to basics over there too.

Nate, it's been a pleasure to watch you for so many years. I've got married. I've had kids. I got my degree. I started teaching. You've been there for it all. I showed my son the last few videos and he thinks you're awesome too. Thanks for always being there.
It makes me happy to see this channel growing, I grew up with TKOR and with your help I developed an interest in science.
Not the first time I've donated to NFTI but it's been a little while. I think the last time was during a live stream where I sent $20 for him not to do a British accent anymore. Lol! Always happy to support this dude! Amazing content and genuinely seems like a good guy!
Wow! Thank you so much!!
@@NFTI 👍
The shutter speed part of the video is not just water. Rims on a car, helicopter blades, fan blades, you can match the shutter speed to any of those and you will get some cool effects
I'd consider that effect, called rolling shutter, a slightly different effect, as it causes a spinning, solid object to appear distorted due to the limit of how fast a camera can capture each row of pixels, while water aliasing happens because of how the framerate itself syncs. There are some cameras that don't have rolling shutter, called "global shutter" cameras, and those cameras would still be able to record water aliasing, but spinning objects would appear as expected without distortion
Awesome video Nate! I actually built one of your laminar flow tubes back when you made it on TKOR. It blew my nephews minds. We watched you build one together and then went and bulit it together. Awesome, awesome memory. Thanks Nate and glad to see youre still making videos!
I instantly thought about the CD episode when I saw the thumbnail :) I hope you get a chance to collab with the Captain one day, that would be amazing!
Heya Nate, I love the return to science and what TKOR originally stood for. I would love to learn about how the world works instead of clickbait "Oh my goodness crazy thing in the thumbnail!" Here's my offer: keep up the science and I'll keep coming back. Take care, have a good day! ❤
Love the video! Just wanted to point out 1 thing about water aliasing... You said that it's ONLY visible with a camera, but a properly timed strobe light in a dimly lit room makes it visible to the naked eye.
that's not naked eye though since you are constraining the environment so that you can achieve the effect. naked eye would mean out in the sun with no strobe light
Keep the great videos coming! I always liked your simplicity and humility!
I just love the summary at the end of everything taught in the video. Could you please continue that? It really helps to connect beginning and the end an increases the understanding. At least for me it does. In genearl: great work Nate. Keep it up!
I’m thrilled to hear that Nate’s videos are getting so many views! 18 million is fantastic. More people need to know about Nate, because he’s awesome!
Great video Nate! I loved watching you on TKOR! Just subscribed!
i greatly enjoyed this video formatting !
Dude, this was an awesome video. More lie this please. I now they take time to put together, but they are so worth it.
I love the breakdown, and the CD homage with the thumbnail. I'd be hella honored to be featured in one of his vids as well. Unless I'm the moron he has to debunk 😅
Nate is so nice. I remember the laminar flow video from TKOR, I watched back in the day with my kid.
Leidenfrost effect next!
Huge fan of Captain Disillusion! I also really liked this video! You have a new subscriber!
With the laminar flow it'd be interesting to drop a couple of drops of food coloring into the stream to see what happens.
I'm sorry but that thumbnail is wild I can't be the only one seeing it!
Only guys and trans girls know why the thumbnail is so funny.
Lmao didn't notice until you said it, gues he *really* likes laminar flow

Great Video! Thanks
I love how people just try to destroy what's actually happening saying it's fake without you know, TRYING IT THEMSELVES!! Gawd dayum!
People are just lazy and dumb ya know 🙃
Loved the video!
You're a Waterbender Nate!
Yay, science....y...stuff! Thanks for the elaboration, it's interesting and cool to see.
You should make a video where you just record the different hz as like a calming/asmr video! It was just sooo satisfying seeing it move like that😯
I think he he is the one that collectively the internet should call the New King Of Random. All Hail!
0:38 - I remember watching a show in the 90's that showed how Disney engineers designed and built tiny versions of these laminar flow "filters" for a water feature at Epcot...
TKOR seems to have returned to its old type of content
If you look at the new long form videos from tkor with a new host
Outstandingly cool
I did that trick with my ceiling fan and a strobe light app. Made it look like my fan was not moving at all or slowly moving forwards or backwards. Do it in the dark for the best results.
With the speaker scene, i feel like I'm the only one who thought about someone doing the helicopter 😂
The number of people asking why the tape is necessary is slightly concerning.
This reminds me of the Classic King Of Random videos. Such Nostalgia. Were's Calli?. 😄👍💯
Destin was a must ❤
That thumbnail lol
If you do end up making another video about this, you should do a full collab with Destin and do something specific, like make the widest/longest laminar flow :)
4:20 You can see the hose vibrating back and forth at the rate of the absolute difference of the speaker frequency and the frame rate. When you have two sounds interacting like this, you get a beat based on the difference of the frequency of the difference.
Hi Nate, awesome video, you've shown interest in the past in freezing random items, my question/challenge for you is, can you freeze a laminar flow (without destroying its 'flow' shape) by using liquid nitrogen, dry ice or any other item i havent mentioned? Good Luck
that reminds me of Captain Dissilusions laminar flow video.
5:48 hahaha should've waited to comment until the end
This video's thumbnail is also a homage to Captain Disillusione's video.
As soon as I read laminar flow I thought about Destin😂
I love how at this point you mention the word Lamiar flow, destin always finds away to pop up either in said talking about it or in the comments section and it's brilliant.
Nice try Nate, but we all know you're really a wizard
It is visible to the naked eye, if you tune a strobe light to the same frequency.
True! But I didn't wanna set this up indoors.
correct
@NFTI Bathtub? Just cuz cool to see?
I had a bunch of DJ lights setup in my apt once in college and took a shower with a strobe on. Made for a trippy effect feeling the water hitting me but seeing it frozen in the air.
Trying to show this effect using a strobe on camera would basically be the same as without the strobe for viewers since you’re still going to be syncing the camera to the frequency right?
But, is water 'WET'?@@NFTI
Can’t believe tkor dropped you and cali I also am stoked you’re finally up to 707k 😊😊😊😊
NATE! Ive always wondered something. Is it possible to create a laminar flow in shape of a tube? What i mean is the center is hollow with walls of water around it. Would love to see it.
He knew what he was doing with that thumbnail
Videos like this make me wanna raise my hands to the sky, and scream declaring " I LOVE SCIENCE!"
Not sure it needed the recap. but still was fun.
Laminar flow waterfountain... the boujeeiest thing i didnt know i needed
Yup. It's a balloon. I heard him say it before he actually did say it. Love ya, Nate!
My bladder thanks you.
Reminds me of the TKOR backyard
Still better content than the “new” TKOR
Can you achieve laminar flow with thinner or thicker liquids? like Hot water vs Cold, pure alcohol, if feasible liquid nitrogen or oxygen?
Your hole punching method, have you tried a Pin or low powered bb gun to try and punch a rounder hole? does the straight craft blade edge help more since you seem to stick it fully in there.
I believe the bouncing thing you are seeing when you have the camera off-sync with the frequency of the speaker is very similar to playing 2 sine waves. You get a secondary beat frequency
I have definitely seen that thumbnail before
Thought it was Destin looked different sorry from Canada lol
Love science knowledge is power
I work in machining with metal mostly crs hrs and 0-1 science is good alot of things most companies use it mixing are food right portions and portions for enough strength in buildings knowledge is power
G I Joe some might get my references lol Nice Video
Justin from Smarter everyday is whatching 😅😅
Looks laminar to me my guy
I'm now going to study people peeing more closely. I'm sure they won't mind.
3:48 While I understand that this can be done without CGI, you might want to put an additional stream of water that isn't vibrating in the shot. I suspect that would make it more convincing that it IS real as opposed to CGI work.
Will it work for other liquids like soda or alcohol? Be interesting to see if carbonation makes a difference
Doesn’t that whole floating in the thing in the air have to do with the way sound vibrations act on a given fluid and am I saying that right?
Does the tape have to be in a square? Or do other shapes work?
Bet you can also realize water aliasing with strobing lights, which some people might consider more natural than framerates of electronic shutters.
I think I've seen that before.
Is it possible to make a high pressure laminar flow water canon?
Hi, have a great day!
Does this work on all fluids with low viscosity? I.g. gasses, rubbing alcohol, etc.
It can work with any fluid but lower viscosity may make it harder to happen
You should try setting the frequency to HiFi audio. I want to see how that would look.😃
is there any way you could keep filling balloon so it never empties so the affect last forever
It’s great to see that Nate holds no hard feelings towards TKOR (or at least doesn’t show it. A true professional). However I still think his departure led to a drastic drop in their quality. Just my opinion. 🤷🏼♂️
Have you done or would you do a cooking experiment specifically for butter v expensive butter v margarine for cooking/baking? My Aldi friends mostly say there is no difference while a few insist it makes the most difference in their recipes.
Deep dive into high Reynolds number laminar flow might be something Destin could get into on his channel.
did as good a job as my uni professors ngl
1:36 the explosion almost looked laminar.
Cool... but how did you determine this would work?
Best man
Shotgun mic audio at the end? But you were wearing your lapel mic.
Also how does the tape maintain the balloon's integrity and make it resistant to popping?
The buzzing when I'm next to the speaker? I forgot to turn my lav mic on.
The tape stops the ballon from tearing open. Within the square, the stretching is localised so after you pop that one part of it, the latex relaxes to where it's no longer under tension, but the tape stops the rest of the balloon tension from pulling on it.
@@NFTI Not the part with the speaker, I meant the end at 5:59 .
Ahhh so the stickiness of the tape maintains the latex tension for the rest of the balloon since the latex under the tape is stuck in its original stretched state. I think I get it now.
Thanks for explaining Nate! Much appreciated.
do a collab with destin to see if you actually can build a Laminar Flow Mirror.
Ok Laminar flow, Water Aliasing with a speaker and a laser. Bonus points for adding fiber optics.
How about sticking an hose into the intake of the balloon then matching the inflow to the outflow (once the balloon is filled) for a longer demo. Would it work?
The water has to settle in the balloon to stop all the motion of the water. Connected to a hose it would have high turbulence.
@@NFTI So, it might only work if it was a very large balloon and a low in/ out flow?
Does this work with other fluids?
I REALLY want to drink that for some reason
What's the best recipe for slime
I think you can achieve water aliasing with the naked eye in a dimly lit place with stobe lights, same principle.
What about other fluids of various viscosity? Maybe alcohol, mercury, and cooking oil? Liquid nitrogen might be difficult to work with.
I appreciate trying to fight the trolls and haters making false statements in the comments, if only they would learn from this and be more careful about making ignorant comments in the future, sigh it'll never happen.
Hi nate :]
