Here's a suggestion for something to make cotton and hard candy with (and maybe soda too, and possibly other types of candy):
Lipton Sweetened Peach Iced Tea Mix powder (the canister one which is made from cane sugar/sucrose)

I have a nostalgia cotton candy machine and once I used peppermint discs and spearmint discs. Work amazing. It didn’t need to be blended and had to be placed in the center when the device was turned off.

With mine, it can use two small pieces of ANY hard candy or sugar-free candy, as long as it doesn’t have filling, or anything liquid-like. It helps by crushing them, too.
It is a lot smaller, and powder materials don’t work well.

I think that part of the reason cotton candy sugar is a larger grain size is because fine powder blows away in the machine.

My favorite was at a fair--a maple syrup farm had dried their syrup and spun into the most delicious cotton candy I've ever had. It went soggy really fast but it was awesome.

Thanks for saving me the effort and disappointment I would have had. I just ordered the Nostalgia machine and a carton of Gold Medal floss sugar, but they split the order and the machine arrived but the sugar won’t get here for a few more days. I had a roll of Bottle Caps I was going to try but now I know it won’t work.
I got a couple of “gourmet” lollipops to try in the meantime. One of the flavors is in fact called “Cotton Candy” so turning that into actual cotton candy should be like turning Pinocchio into a real boy.

As someone who made cotton candy weekly for years as part of my job, I can tell you that you need more sugar than that if you want any decent amount of cotton candy. And if you aren’t cleaning the machine between candy you could have a combo of the different candy flavors.
