Split vs. Splitless Injection

  • Split and splitless are the two most commonly used GC injection techniques. While they share some similarities, each is suited to a particular type of analysis. But how do you know which one to use?
    In this video, we explore how these two techniques work. We’ll start with split injection, demonstrate the technique in action, and explain what split ratios are. We’ll then switch to splitless injection, show how it differs from split mode, and cover what splitless hold time is and why it matters. Finally, we’ll look at the strengths of each mode to help you choose the right one for your analysis.

    In the diagrams of the inlet it appears that the column protrudes more into the liner for splitless injections versus split injection. Is this correct or am I taking too much from the diagrams? Thanks!

      Column installation distance should not change between split and splitless.

      @@RestekCorp Thanks for your quick response and I appreciate it.
      A lot of sample introduction methods in GC can be used such as:
      1- Thermal desorption (single vs multi/ two stage)
      2- Solid-phase microextraction (SPME)/ Headspace
      3- Purge and Trap
      4- Cold On-Column Injection
      5- Programmable Temperature Vaporizing (PTV) Injection
      6- Gas Sampling Valve
      These are some other sample introduction methods other than split/split injection method.
      Thanks

      We have several videos in development for SPME right now, and most of the rest of your list are already on our idea list, but we will add the others. Thank you!

    In splitless type, why was the vent opened after sometime?

    • @RestekCorp
      @RestekCorp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In splitless, the vent is opened to purge any remaining material from the inlet. Accordingly, it is important to set the time for when that happens correctly. You should allow time, based on flow rate and liner volume, for 1.5 to 2 liner volumes to pass through the inlet, then open the split vent to purge any remaining material.

    How to calculate split rato based on column and split flow.

    • @RestekCorp
      @RestekCorp  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is generally expressed as a ratio of split flow : column flow, so if you have 100 mL/min of split vent flow and 1 mL/min of column flow, you have a split ratio of 100:1.
