I went through a couple of monitors before I finally broke down and bought the SmallHD 502 and I haven't looked back. So the image has to be encoded from the sensor and then decoded and sent to the LCD display, which doesn't happen instantaneously. In the case of external monitors the signal has to be encoded from the sensor, recorded to the memory, re-encoded for HDMI or USB, sent to the external unit and then decoded for display. Full frame cameras have worse latency than crop frame. The LCD display on a Rebel 550D/T2i is way faster than a 5D Mk III because it has far less information to process.

Great overview! I bought the Feelworld F7 a few months back and it has been one of my best gear purchases (Although the auto power on is insanely annoying). Wish I would have known about the Bestview S7 before buying it as it seems to address a lot of the issues I have with the Feelworld F7. I'm also pretty jealous of the Viltrox DC-70 build quality and that super fast flip out sun shade. Feelworld F7 sun shade is kind of annoying and there's nothing to protect the screen when you put it away like with the Viltrox. One thing to note is that I think most if not ALL of these have terrible cold shoe mounts. My monitor fell off 4-5 times during a recent shoot in India. Got back to the US and immediately replaced it with a Manfrotto 492LCD micro ball head that is SOLID. And to make a long comment longer, the GH4 and GH5 have terrible latency over HDMI no matter what monitor you use. I tried to use my GH4 to send to a projector for a live event so people in the back could see better and the video was so delayed compared to the live audio over the speaker system that it was making it look like a bad kung-fu movie hahaha.
I once purchased a 200 € monitor that is the worst (not because it was relatively “cheap”, it was just bad, especially for the price): the HDMI didn't work, the bottom part where the battery plate is attached broke the first day (very cheap plastic!), no battery charge level indicator... I've been regretting it since today. But that teach me to be much more careful and do my research much more carefully since then. I'm not sure all these beauties were available then, tho... It was Walimex (you're welcome...) and looked very much like that MustHD... Helpful video, as always.
I think you are the first person on youtube to review the DC-70 HD. I think I'm going to buy it. I returned the FW760 because it felt so flimsy and plasticy and the buttons are too loud. The DC-70 HD with it's aluminum build looks a lot sturdier. Great video, I appreciate you taking the time to compare all these camera monitors 👍
so did you buy the DC-70HD? I just ordered it and also noticed that this is the only vid on youtube to even mention it. I shoot with a Nikon. Does your monitor work well??
Great info for anybody who shoots youtube vids with the sony and need a cheaper monitoring solution without the fancy sch-mancies! Thanks Caleb! Played with the Feelworld at NAB, and have to admit as well the display quality is impressive

If you ever decide to do an update to this video (including newer monitors like Feelworld's A737 and T7, among others), what would be great is if you also have companion videos for each monitor to show how each of the features work. I've found that many of the Feelworld monitors will not zoom in on a 4k image, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a 4k capable monitor. Also of interest is how "clicky" or silent the buttons are, which can be a consideration when using these to record interviews and weddings where you want to make as little noise as possible. And as has been mentioned before, with the monitors that don't list brightness, doing a side-by-side comparison with monitors of known brightness would be very helpful. Thanks!
HOLY BALLSSSSS! LOL there is a way to turn the speaker off though. You have to dive through the menus, but I've done it cause I use the Neewer monitor.
Thanks for the video.. however at least 3 of these are substantially above $200, even using your links? Did yo get them from somewhere other than amazon?
Like the Duke said, are you in Canada? Also, I've been noticing several stores will jack prices when they see heavy traffic. I'll try to keep an eye on things and swap links if prices go high.
Thanks for the time, money and effort you put into making this video, Caleb! Some questions: 1. If I am primarily getting a monitor like these primarily for drone use, how much of an issue is the lag problem? 2. Have you tried the Elvid SkyVision 7" On-Camera & Aerial Imaging LCD Monitor? 3. On the specs for it, the brightness isn't measured in NIT, but rather in cd/m². How does that compare to NIT (better or worse)? Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer these. - Christopher (The American Photographer Down in Brazil).
If you ever do a test like this again, using a phone with a stop watch is a great way to test latency. Point the camera at the screen of the phone as it counts up and then freeze a frame from your second cam (pointed at the camera and monitor) in post. Measure the difference between the time shown on the monitor vs the time shown on the back panel of the camera. It shouldn't really add any real extra setup or time to your recording and only a little bit of difference in post but gives you a very accurate measurement of the actual input latency.
great vid, quick question for the bestview s7 if i connect the monitor to my sony camera though hdmi input then connect my tv to the hdmi output on the monitor, that will work of course right? So i can connect the monitor to the camera then to my TV in my producer room thanks
FYI: I purchased the FW760 directly from the manufactors website for CNY1,000 - about USD158 including shipping. This might be a cost-saving alternative to amazon. The website is in Chinese and uses alibaba for checkout but if have a buddy who can help (or google chrome's autotranslate) it's totally doable.
Yes! I bought the Feelworld FW760 when you did the other Feelworld monitor review. SO great. I use it for everything and I love the features. I like that it has anamorphic frames (for my everyday lenses) and anamorphic squeeze (for my rentals)!
Sick video. LMFAO that reaction to the audio loop had me cracking up. I always appreciate the thorough reviews, even if I have a G7 and can't even use a monitor, heh.
It does, but it can't output via HDMI and record internally at the same time - the two use different color spaces - so if you wanna use a monitor with it, it has to be a recorder, too!
EposVox that's wild! I know on the a6300, of outputting HDMI and recording internally, the liveview goes out, not the monitor. Some cameras have the option to toggle this, like FS7 I think - it was set to turn off the HDMI monitor and not the live view by default I think. Crazy if there isn't such a setting on the G7!
damn, i was searching for this like a crazy man yesterday, and found very few videos about it. this came just in time ahah. Your product comparisons are the best! keep going!!
Ordered the Viltrox DC-70 II couple of weeks ago from Aliexpress, it should arrive this week. Glad to know that it is at least half-decent. It will work with GH4 on Ronin M (need it mostly for framing when shooting from awkward angles). Thanks for the review!
If you do these again in the future, I would recommend filming a slate with a time code display (or a tablet / with a timecode app) so you can see just how much of a delay there actually is. Great video. Too bad about the delay on these. Things like racking focus or keeping focus on a moving talent is gonna be hard. :/
Luck would have it that I had just purchased the FH7 4 days before this review came out. I'll probably be returning it now. I just purchased the Bestview S7 through your link. Thanks!
Hey! I'd like to buy the "Bestview S7 Monitor", but since I have some V-Mount batteries to power my GH5, I want to use a D-Tap cable from the V-Lock to also power the monitor, instead of using NP-f Batteries.. Can I buy a "D-Tap to DC Cable" for that setup without sending too much voltage to the monitor, and frying it? Thanks!!
...always latency in the video. Isn't the latency because the HDMI output from the camera is delayed? Have bought the Viltrox DC70 and I find almost zero latency. (probably 1-2 frame latency, due to obvious resolution conversion, which needs that delay for processing).
I really needed this video -- thanks a milion! I rebooted my photography hobby after a 20-yr hiatus; bought a nice used DSLR but it has a stationary screen...started looking at these but too many products...your review helps. I will use one of your links to buy. Be well.
I really appreciate the time and research you put into this video. But I couldn’t watch it till the end. Main reason being that the first 4 monitors have serious latency problems yet you include them on this list. Even with minimum movement, those monitors are not reliable on sets because of the latency. And I don’t have a budget of over $150 because I’m getting one only for my focus puller. Hence, had to close the video. Obviously, that doesn’t mean the video is bad. It shows the hard work put into it. But can you please do a video on budget monitors with no latency or so? I don’t even know if a budget monitor exists that shows virtually no latency. But would love to hear from you.

I purchased the Feelworld FW760 a while back and find it to be a great monitor. I also compared it to the MustHD 7" model. I thought you would have mentioned the HDMI locking feature on the MustHD monitor which is a nice addition. "Holy Balls..." classic!
Hey Caleb! Quick question the Viltrox DC-50 will take a 4k single if I use it with my a6300? sorry if you already answered this but I believe I missed it. Thanks man
Noway!! This can't be happening. Caleb is coming with a great comparison video, when i had to order a screen yesterday hahah. My Samsung nx1 screen cracked last week. So i had to get a monitor to keep projects going. Now I just bought the mustHD. Maybe that 'cheap little monitor' as i tought. Is not the best bang for the buck hahah. Anyways great video. I think loads of people will have comfort with buying a right monitor with this video. Keep up the good work!!
I own the neewer 759 panel and i can turn the volume down. use the left and right arrow buttons on the front of the panel. its to the right of the mode button in the lower left.
Thanks Caleb. Your reviews and recommendations are quite helpful when I'm looking to pick up a new piece of gear for my video business. I just purchased the Bestview S7 (paid $109.00 for it on Ebay) based on your opinion. I appreciate your thoughtful and detailed reviews. You nail it every time. You sir are dope.
I think there's SOME delay inherent with the GH5, but some of these monitors it's clear they are adding some as well! I'm not sure about the GH5 myself, but I have a Black Magic Video Assist 4k and on the Sony a6300, it's perfect - no delay that I can see but on my GH5, I certainly notice it being at least a few frames different. I've been toying with the idea of checking out the SmallHD lineup with the Focus coming out/out now, but I'm concerned about that delay being there, too! I use monitors a lot for off-the-sticks or shoulder shooting, so the delay is always something I'm concerned with, and I'm glad you showcased how much there is with someone of these! Do you still use that small Ikan monitor you showed off....I'd say about a year ago? That seemed nice but small compared to these options for a similar price!
Yeah, GH5 has terrible latency (GH4 was the same thing). Nobody seems to talk about it so I'm excited this video is brining attention to it. Hopefully it will help bring it to light and get panasonic to work on it.
I am not sure. The issue is getting them down on the monitor level as much as you can. If you look up Panasonic's GH5 Clean HDMI Output Video, where they use a Atmos recorder, you can see the delay of a handful of frames in their example. (Watch the guy's hands!) Some of certainly better than others, but it makes it hard for me to consider using monitors fullon day-to-day with a lot of delay, but I could live with a few frames delay from higher end monitors. Hopefully this is something Panasonic can address in a firmware update....but I'm not holding my breath.
With the GH4/GH5 I've found the latency does get a TINY bit better if you are in 1080 rather than 4K. I believe shooting in lower frame rates helps too, but not a dramatic improvement at all. Plus I'm not going to change my resolution and frame rate just to get a little less lag on my monitor haha.
While this is an excellent opening act to a two act play...what I'd REALLY like to see is how the best of these (eg. the Bestview S7) stacks up to the Small HD Focus that won all the awards at NAB. As a Sony a6500 user (who also bought your excellent guide to that camera)...I want to know if the Focus is worth twice the price or more, or am I paying all that extra cash for the 800 NITS and the fancy (though well-thought-out) mounting system? So when you get a chance, do some real world tests outside with the focus peaking, false colour, zebras, etc. I'm about to pull the trigger on the Small HD, but if one of these is 90% of that I can live without 800 nits perhaps? I also think 5" might be a better form factor.
Thanks. I'll probably spring for the Focus because of the LUTS, 5" form factor and Small HD software, and because my ego needs the boost of buying something much better than I really need :)
I do not recommend the bestview and forbid anyone from buying one. USA bestview site states it come with safe color feature but it doesn't. Focus leaking barely works and only on none flat profiles which means filming in log or cinelike make this feature useless...image needs to have lots of contrast for it to work. Pixel to pixel ONLY works in c4k res...in 4k uhd image is turned into 4:3 resolution instead. No power level indication so you can be filming and it will shut off without warning when drained. Buttons do not work unless on first click....you click the button once and it just shows that buttons current setting instead of activating but will if you click it again....you have been warned!
Just a note on my experience with the Neewer. I got that one based off of this review and it's working great (there's a small defect in the lower left corner of the screen, so I might exchange for another one), but on the latency, I'm experiencing none. My human eye can't detect any latency at all. So that's nice. I'm using it on a Sony A6500.
Just like you did with the led lights comparison series, will you make an episode with slightly higher priced monitors? I was looking to buy an aputure vs-2 fineHD and I'd like to check other options as well at that price level. Thanks and have a nice week!
Great video. I had someone loan me a Feelworld F7 with a GH5 at a festival, didn't even use the F7 except as a test. I was impressed by the brightness and clarity for a $200 monitor. I own a 702 and 502 but will likely pick up the S7 now as an extra directors monitor. Do you think the S7 and F7 have the same video panel within?
Thanks for the great video! I bought the the Viltrox DC-70 HD and found that focus peaking does not work on it. I came back to watch the video again and I see that your copy doesn't do focus peaking either (7:02). There is a problem with the histogram as well, never showing 75% white. Also, The 2A power supply they sell for the monitor doesn't put out enough current to drive the monitor at all (boots, then crashes). Fortunately, the monitor can be powered via the USB "upgrade" port. The sun shade is great, though, as well as the brightness/color/contrast/resolution. It looks great, but the extra features are not only hard to get at vie the crappy wheel-button interface, but some of them just don't work.
I had the Neewer 759 and if you use the arrows that turns the volume down FYI, but i notcied if i wanted to record in 4k the monitor wouldnt display only worked in 1080p? Was that due to the settings or even the HDMI? but they are like £48 so didnt expect them to be as good as it is!
I had the Viltrox DC 50 tested. It has a DSLR scale mode which does not work with Canon DSLRs (t2i, 7d, 80d etc.) It scales into the image but also cuts away the framing at the right and bottom part of the recorded image. So end up with ether a starched image in 16:9 or one with correct aspect ratio in 4:3 but with black bars all around it, so you end up having more like a 3,5 inch monitor. :) Wonder if it is supposed to work with Nikon DSLRs. Also, would be great if possible, to know how all other monitors behave with scaling modes for those Canon and Nikon DSLRs without proper full HD HDMI output.
I have a word for you! Thanks! And I should also say you spoke very clear and accurate. I have been looking for a cheap monitor, and you help me a lot!
Attention anamorphic shooters and Caleb. In the Review you mention that the Feelworld F7 and the Bestview S7 are identical on the inside and just sport different enclosures, I am paraphrasing. It is my understanding though that while both monitors can display 1 : 2.39 anamorphic footage, only the Feelworld will de-squeeze the image coming from the camera. That is a significant difference.
Hey Caleb, are you doing a video about (cheaper) monitors with LOW/NO latency? None of these monitors aren't good if you have big camera movement and you have to monitor and operate via the monitor.
Caleb, once again thanks for a great overview video of a piece of equipment I didn't know I needed (and I don't!) and now want! Think I'll go for the Neewer model. Great content! Thank you.
The old Aputure VS-1 may well have been 800x480 resolution, but the 'finehd' bit on the one you're showing means it's 1920x1200 (hence the space at the bottom for their own display)...
I've been using the Neewer one as a slave monitor for clients to watch a long on for a few years, it's been bullet proof it's been around the world, it's been dropped, bumped, sat on, I honestly thought it'd last a few months, I only bought it for one job, but it's proved that they're making some really decent stuff.
Thanks for this video, it's ideal for me because I just bought a black magic production 4K and a good monitor is my next buy. I live in Vietnam so my options are limited to what they have here, so I'm going to get the Feelworld F7 - the other model you said was better isn't available here nor is the F760. It's basically the last thing I need to buy before we can start shooting....
I can't wait for the Smallhd Focus review. It's the main target on my radar, but as great as Smallhd is, I'm not sure if I'm paying a little for brand...
UPDATE 1: On the NW759, you can avoid the "HOLY BALLS!" experience and just use the arrow buttons to adjust the volume. Special thanks to you guys for the heads up!

At 16:12 you show the Feelworld F7 but talk about the FW760, I could tell by the lack of buttons. Still a great video comparison.
Doesn't the Panasonic G7 have an HDMI out?
It does, but it can't output via HDMI and record internally at the same time - the two use different color spaces - so if you wanna use a monitor with it, it has to be a recorder, too!
EposVox thanks for the heads up on that
EposVox that's wild!
Thanks EposVox! Glad you enjoyed it!
so glad somebody actually talks about latency, it's a deal breaker trying to get sharp focus with moving objects
Was waiting for this one, thanks for testing them all!
Thank you for watching Gio!!!
Fantastic comparison video ! A lot of behind the scenes work had to go into a video like this.
damn, i was searching for this like a crazy man yesterday, and found very few videos about it. this came just in time ahah. Your product comparisons are the best! keep going!!
Thank you Joao!!!
Great video! To the point and prolific. Nice production and editing too.
Now the real question is whats the most affordable monitor with very low latency... cause that is a killer
"Wholy ball!!!" love it!!
Hahaha, holy balls classic
Ordered the Viltrox DC-70 II couple of weeks ago from Aliexpress, it should arrive this week. Glad to know that it is at least half-decent. It will work with GH4 on Ronin M (need it mostly for framing when shooting from awkward angles).
Thanks for the review!
For framing it'll work fine. It is also one of the larger and lighter units which will be nice on a Ronin.
The most valuable, most reliable, most real dude channel. You rock. Love your stuff!
Thank you for the video. It helped me decide. I like your format and style. I hope you keep churning out videos like this and your others.
Literally just looking to buy my first monitor on the cheap and this comes out. Props, Caleb!
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I knew there was a reason I subscribed to your channel many moons ago, Playboy 20/20!
Thanks Caleb!!! This is exactly the video I needed as I am in the process of choosing a moniter for a short film I am making.
If you do these again in the future, I would recommend filming a slate with a time code display (or a tablet / with a timecode app) so you can see just how much of a delay there actually is.
Great video. Too bad about the delay on these. Things like racking focus or keeping focus on a moving talent is gonna be hard. :/
lol you killed me " WHOLY BAWLS"
Luck would have it that I had just purchased the FH7 4 days before this review came out. I'll probably be returning it now. I just purchased the Bestview S7 through your link. Thanks!
Bought Viltrox DC-70 HD... Can't wait. Build quality FTW.
Be well.
Just what I needed. More excellent work from Caleb. Thank you for your great work and your perseverance.
Agreee
Don’t you think he would have included one if it existed?
Fantastic background with all the monitors :-) I like it!
Thanks Heiko!

I want to thank you for this useful and complete review of monitors, this is going to be very helpful to me in a near future.
I purchased the Feelworld FW760 a while back and find it to be a great monitor. I also compared it to the MustHD 7" model. I thought you would have mentioned the HDMI locking feature on the MustHD monitor which is a nice addition.
"Holy Balls..." classic!
I was just researching which monitor to buy the past week! This video really helped me choose which monitor to buy! Thanks man!
Thank you for the kind words Vincent! There is always the return option!
I have the Neewer NW759. Had the speaker issue but after searching I found the volume setting. I find it to be a solid monitor.
If you hit the arrows on the neewer/feelworld it'll bring the volume up or down
I own the neewer 759 panel and i can turn the volume down. use the left and right arrow buttons on the front of the panel. its to the right of the mode button in the lower left.
Nice to hear someone with someone actual knowledge reviewing kit
I got the viltrox DC-50. I'll be posting an unboxing video soon! Thank you so much for this video!!
All the monitor I used had no delay, the delay comes from the camera HDMI output, try with a pc and look the mouse pointer move.
Is there ANY monitor without latency or do they all have the same problem on the Panasonic cameras?
I am not sure. The issue is getting them down on the monitor level as much as you can. If you look up Panasonic's GH5 Clean HDMI Output Video, where they use a Atmos recorder, you can see the delay of a handful of frames in their example. (Watch the guy's hands!) Some of certainly better than others, but it makes it hard for me to consider using monitors fullon day-to-day with a lot of delay, but I could live with a few frames delay from higher end monitors. Hopefully this is something Panasonic can address in a firmware update....but I'm not holding my breath.
What is odd is that I tested these on the GH4, GH5, a6500 and all had bad latency at 4K AND 1080... Very odd.
I'll definitely compare them with my Focus!
Thanks. I'll probably spring for the Focus because of the LUTS, 5" form factor and Small HD software, and because my ego needs the boost of buying something much better than I really need :)
yes, please! this is my dilemma as well. thanks again for an excellent review!
Yes, we want to know if the Focus is worth the price point
Can you please review lilliput a7s new field monitor ? I am wondering which one is better lilliput a7s or bestviews7
Thanks! This is exactly the video I was looking for. :)
Happy to be of service Rory!
Amazing video! Do any of the monitors work with a canon t5?
Great video. I had someone loan me a Feelworld F7 with a GH5 at a festival, didn't even use the F7 except as a test. I was impressed by the brightness and clarity for a $200 monitor. I own a 702 and 502 but will likely pick up the S7 now as an extra directors monitor. Do you think the S7 and F7 have the same video panel within?
lol I appreciate the cluttered background of monitors. It adds a nice touch.
Another super helpful video, thank you very much
Nice ! have you purchased any of these monitors? im thinking of buying the 3rd one
Wonder if it is supposed to work with Nikon DSLRs.
Also, would be great if possible, to know how all other monitors behave with scaling modes for those Canon and Nikon DSLRs without proper full HD HDMI output.
Good to know! Thanks Petr! To keep the video shorter, I didn't demo all crop modes on the monitors.
I have a word for you! Thanks!
And I should also say you spoke very clear and accurate. I have been looking for a cheap monitor, and you help me a lot!
I confess, I can't purchase anything regarding video and photo, without watching your channel. Awesome Caleb ;)
Thank you for the kind words Hybrid Life! Means a lot!
You really deserve it ;)
Attention anamorphic shooters and Caleb.
Great video! Thanks for putting all the time, money and effort into making this comparison!
May I ask if you recommend adding 5/7 camera monitor on the side while I am filming with DSLR & Gimbal ?
I've been using the Neewer one as a slave monitor for clients to watch a long on for a few years, it's been bullet proof it's been around the world, it's been dropped, bumped, sat on, I honestly thought it'd last a few months, I only bought it for one job, but it's proved that they're making some really decent stuff.
These comparison videos are so great!
Thank you so much for that!
Thanks Julian! Glad you enjoyed it.
4:50 demons possessing the monitor XD love ur content btw ✌️
Great video, I am glad you are able to test all these. Make my shopping easier.
Even I´m happy with my bmd4k video assist i enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for all this helpfull tests.
Thanks for watching SelfBio!
I literally was looking for a monitor roundup from your videos yesterday! How funny hahaha.
Glad I could deliver! Took me long enough!
What about the Lilliput 7 inch monitor? It's a popular choice under $200 but wasn't reviewed...
