I’ve been so excited for this video and I can say I came out with so many key bits of knowledge that I can now implement. EL Zone will be a game changer for failing contrast ratios on skin tones etc. Thanks for putting in that work.
Until your video, I thought all of my SmallHD products were unable to update to Pageos5. Glad I watched! Just updated mine and man between this tool and Ed explaining it is incredible! Thanks for this!
My favorite monitor of all time is the SmallHD Focus 5 OLED. Super light weight. Low power consumption. Touch screen. Perfect blacks. Only downside is low nits for outdoor shooting.
Great video. I'm hooked on EL Zone. Failing to distinguish mid-tone grays in Arri false color caused me to miss skin tones. Huge respect to Ed Lachman for pushing this newer approach.
Must admit I hated the 502 monitor I had, nice and small but had constant overheating issues with it despite sending it back twice. That said I’d be tempted to look at one of these newer monitors now it seems like they’ve improved build of them.
The more I hear about EL zone, the more I get excited about the future of filmmaking. This all came from asking "why?" and look where it's gotten us. Why is false color the go-to for exposure and bam, here we are with EL zone. Can you imagine other principles that we follow that need to be questioned? This is pretty exciting! Now to get a monitor that uses EL zone. lol
"then you buy a car, adopt three children, marry one woman, have another on the side, aquire an university degree in civil engeneering and metaphysics, learn how to play racketball, practise the trumpet daily, and then you have set up el zone."
Ansel Adams would be very proud to see the Zone System finding a new place in video production like this. He passed away right as the technologies behind digital cameras and photoshop were being invented and was a big fan of the future in store for photography.
I've seen a lot of negative reviews regarding the fan (for the Indie). Is this blown out of proportion? Or do you have issues with this as well. Thank you for making this vid!
NGL, When I first heard about EL Zone I was kinda ticked because I loved using False Color so much but after learning about the pipeline for color production and the difference it makes... I bought a 702 and im not looking back! There is just simply no more guessing. Everything turns out how I expect it will
Hi, great video, do you know if there are differences between Indie 5 and Indie 7 (besides screen size)? I see that they are currently both at the same price and the Indie 7 is a little less thick. Thanks!
Thanks! What do you recommend for a beginner? 5" or 7"? After watching your video I thought it would be an excellent tool to learn much more with EL Zone.@@CineDailies
Definitely helps put a foot in the door (considering the price ;0). My perfect monitor would be something like this, with a price between the CINE 5 and the Shinobi, with the possibility to record proxy codec files with the camera naming system on a SD card!
Its always ture to invest reliable and professional tools, though most people struggle to get a reliable a cam at the first place, for those who already have a solid camera setup, they definitly should consider invest better monitors or image transmitters
Same experience just different sizes. in this case I prefer the small SD 5 inch over the 7 just because of the weight. my kinemon 7 monitor is perfect because it’s light.
@@CineDailies appreciate the response. I shoot xh2s and buddy just brought the indie 7 by to check out, definitely makes the rig a bit more fat, but I see more 7s pop up on used than 5s so for same or less cost… may go 7.
weird question..... Is your B cam (Cam right) and cell phone footage shot at 60fps? Not sure why but my eyes felt something different. Love the info man! always happy to see another video.
Depends on your use case. No matter what monitor you choose, it will make your setup significantly bulkier. So this is the first choice. Do you need it over your EVF and/or on camera screen. On smaller mirrorless cameras, I wouldn't use a 7 inch monitor either, better 5 inch. 5 inch is enough to judge autofocus and exposure, for critical handheld focus 7 inch is certainly better. On larger rigs, 7 inch is best as screen real estate is always an advantage. If you only make video as a hobby, a monitor like a Atomos Shinobi is a nice starting point at a good price. The SmallHD's are more for professional use, and are 4 to 5 times the price of a Shinobi, with of course some more professional built quality and features (like an aluminum body, SDI ports, EL Zone exposure measurement etc.)
I'm unlucky, I bought the BM Video Assist and it doesn't include it, I just hope they include it in a future update, otherwise, I'll have to sell my monitor and think about SmallHD or Atomos. Atomos is starting to include it in their monitors. What do you think of that brand? Would you recommend it?
@@CineDailies Oh yes, sorry hehe. I was referring to EL Zone. SmallHD is very good, but also a bit more expensive and doesn't record. However, I can think of it as a second monitor, even if it ends up being the main one.
@@CineDailies I wonder if the gamma curves are close enough between arri log c and BM film for the stop mapping to be more or less equivalent and therefore work as a substitute...
@@CineDailies Yes, whereby the input is still 4K, so you can zoom onto the image without any loss of resolution. This is different from quite a few other monitors.
I want to get smanllhd action but I can't find it. Do you recommend samallhd focus 5? It's a bit old monitor smallhd focus. Can you recommend a different monitor instead?
I like the brand, I’ve only ever owned smallhd. But the company itself sucks. The support is almost insulting, and you never end up using the gimmicky ‘features’ on the monitors, the camera already does all those things. All you need is something bright you can plug in to your camera. The action 5 is a good monitor for that. They gave it some terrible software so that you’d buy the more expensive version. It can also make whites look overexposed at times. Ok it’s a piece of crap but it’s 2000 nits. I wouldn’t bother with the other models, if you’re the one paying for it. The company itself is terrible and from what I can tell, is staffed with not so great people either. They’re not premium. Far from it.
Okay, guys and gals, don't listen to this guy and go spend thousands on this. Remember that if you're startin out or simply cannot afford to buy this, you shouldn't. Let's say if you had this much money the amount of this monitor, just buy a better tripod first. Yes you will live with a $300 video monitor but a good expensive tripod.
@@CineDailies right, though it is still important to know that people can still do the job with what you dismiss as trash. Their video won't be trash, that depends on the skill of the cinematographer. Osee, viltrox and feelworld still last for years. Your video in the final output matters more. I know plenty of people for who their feelworld lasted 4 to 5 years or so.
