Hi Simon. Yes , bloody gorgeous. I have the Sir Nigel Gresley and its mint. I will have to check , my list for the Mallard. I,m not sure that I have that one. All the one's that I have seen looked a bit faded in their colour. Yours looks good though. Good luck.
I have both Brian. Took me a while to find a Sir Nigel in good condition. The green is incorrect, same as the Eastern Star and the early Britannia plus the Ivatt 2MT. Not sure how they got it so wrong. Cheers
A thing of beauty Simon, I’ve visited York railway museum, absolutely fantastic. As a kid on my uncles farm at Bleadon, we used to stand on a gate by the railway line and wave to the steam loco drivers. They always waved back! Happy days as a kid! Your layout is continuing to look brilliant! Cheers 👍🍺🚂
Hi Jeff, not much progress now it's golf season. I must get round to doing something and making some more videos. I don't have many memories of steam as a kid. But I do love it, smeels ans sounds so much better than the jelly mold diesel and electric trains these days.
They both look fantastic!!! Now that really does take me back to my youth. One of my earliest memories was, in my pushchair (1957/58) going down to Enfield Town Station (the end of the line) to watch them turn the engines around on a turntable! They were stubby little tank engines, but I have, like you, been to see a Mallard class in action, many years ago (at New Barnet, maybe, on the West Coast mainline?). Iconic and brilliantly quick at the time!!!
Amazing what we could design and build. What happened to us? Bought it all from abroad these days. The design at least even if we make some here. You've got a bloody good memory! 😂😂😂
They both look like really solidly built models Simon, and bring back good memories! I've seen both Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley in steam, and have been on trains hauled by both of them when I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's, which I remember being very exciting! Wish they did more railtours nowadays so we could relive the experience! All the best, Ian.
These need to be used. Not sat in York all the time. Nice to see, but even nicer to be used. It's such a shame. And they were bloody faster than modern services!
Hi Simon, I guess that visit to Mallard was in preservation days, but what a great memory to have, hope that photo turns up one day. I'm amazed at Ron's control of the Tardis see how he got it balanced on two corners on the track, maybe hes lost the way to the bar on the inside!! Some nice rakes of coaches for both engines to pull as well. In my Dublo collection I have both Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley and Silver Fox I think but my favourite was always The Duchess of Athol, which was originally one of my Dads models when he was younger. The layout looks superb and the trees really add a depth to the view. We're in the clouds down here, a nice drop of rain, hope its dry enough up your way for some golf. Have a great week.
Hello David. It was early 1970's when steam was allowed back on the tracks. It was in Doncaster station in full steam ready to go. I don't remember much. Dapol make a Silver Fox with valences. Not sure if they do the coaches as well for that. Layout has stalled for the moment due to being golf season. No rain here yet and we really need it. The course is burnt out and the sprinkers aren't working very well.
Lovely locomotives!. I have a Minitrix Mallard that my wife (who seems to have an uncanny knack for finding locomotives I love!) found in the back of a cupboard unboxed at a model store in Exeter when we were there on holidays from Canada probably 20 years ago. I had no idea that the speed record plaque was on it, so i just went down to my railway room, pulled her out of a draw and behold! Not only is she in really great shape, she runs perfectly too after probably a decade since she last ran. I’ll have to give her a service and I have a platform on my current uk layout thats a little tight, then maybe I’ll make a film soon!
I know the minitrix models aren't accurate but I love them. All the pacifics use the same chassis and the 9F is a cut up Britannia body. But they are very robust, have more detail than the early Farish, have traction tyres for the hills and are not as fragile as Dapol. And you can still find spares or a broken one on ebay for donor parts. You couldn't ask for more. I can't get spares for Dapol I bought 2 years ago!
Layout looking brilliant Simon, you can't tell where the backdrop ends and the layout begins. I was a little nervous standing on that track. Keep going. Ron
If being on the track makes you nervous Ron then you will need to get a bigger lens on your camera. Perhaps I need to erect a fence to keep train spotters off the track? Looking forward to Friday as usual.
Greetings Simon 🖐You are getting great performance out of those "old boys" 👍definitely built to last 😍 Have you ever picked up a Dapol A4 for comparison? Great running session, the layout is really coming together nicely 😎. Very Best Wishes From The Emerald Isle ☘
Thye are hardly used. My Mallard has barely a few hundred feet of use so far. Same as my Flying Scotsman. I've just bought 2 ivatts that have hardly seen the light of day, boxes were mint. I haven't got a Dapol and wont be. I can get spares for a 40 year old minitrix but not a 1 year old Dapol. That bothers me. Plus they seem a little fragile.

@@ngaugeonashelf4417 Good old Simon, the problem with fences is that most of us see them as a challenge. Keep chuffing. Ron
@@ParkinsonsWalks They wont be a challenge if I glue your feet!
@@ngaugeonashelf4417 You don't fight fair. Ron
@@ParkinsonsWalks Last night you visited the pub then went to the plate layers hut. I hope you only had a lemonade!
Strangely this year has seen many Sir Nigel Gresley locos on ebay. Get one before they are all gone!
