Mizuno JPX921 Hot Metal PRO vs Ping G425

  • Ping G425 Iron vs Mizuno JPX921 Hot Metal Pro. Probably the closest in the mini series of comparisons. Both are similar size, both have larger brothers in the G710 and the Hot Metal. With the G425 now with a smaller profile, both are looking to appeal to the slightly better high handicapper or at least the player looking for a more pleasing profile.

    I just wanted to thank you for devoting so much time to recording and analyzing mishits. I like to watch pros stripe drives down the middle as much as the next guy, but it has nothing to do with my game. This is exactly what I need to decide what clubs I should be looking at. Thanks, and subscribed!

    I've hit both of these irons, and both are quite good. For me the differences were that the Hot Metal Pro looks better, has a broader shaft selection, is better on low strikes, and flies slightly higher with a bit more spin. Similarities are cost is the same and distance is the same. I tested the HM Pro with NS Pro Neo, and the 425 with both the TT Elevate and the stock graphite shaft. I tried a couple of other shafts in each head, but these were the shafts that performed the best for each club. I also tried the 921 Hot Metal and the Forged. I did not like the HM as it looked chunky and the performance was no better than the HM Pro. The Forged was a close 2nd, but not quite as easy to hit as the HM Pro.

    Great video. I'm a new golfer and got fitted yesterday. Tried a load of clubs and these 2 came top quite comfortably. They were just about head to head with everything so I just went with the ping. They just about shaded it in my dispersion and height. Height was my biggest issue so went for them. Plus they were a fair bit cheaper too

      Normal average strike for irons for me is 3mm Toe 4mm Low. Driver is 8mm Toe and 7mm High.

    Another excellent video review and comparison. The biggest difference for me is the offset. I'm left eye dominant, so offset doesn't work as well for me. That's why I have the JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro set. My old Mizuno MP-5 blades are waiting as a backup, just in case. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

    Just found your channel. Love it! Your forgiveness reviews are unmatched on TH-cam! I was fitted for 921 HM Pro. My miss is toe strikes. Sounds like these are good clubs for that. Are there any newer clubs that have better toe strike forgiveness?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not really, even the brand brand new offerings will only have very slight increases in forgiveness performance, so small that will most probably not be noticed if you have a model before. I always as a general rule say that it's always good to skip a model to see what improvements really have been made 👍🏻

    Totally agree with the comment below. You do the best club reviews on You Tube for the ordinary golfer because you test forgiveness by recording the impact of miss-hits. Much appreciated. That said, I often wonder what the impact would be for slower swing speeds. Would you expect the drop off in terms of distance and accuracy to be proportionate at swing speeds 10 mph slower?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being fair Dave, if you imagine that misses are effectively drop offs from 100% then the fast or further an iron goes then the bigger a 10% drop off for example would be. So actually the drop off is smaller for the slower swinger than at my speed 👍

      @@AskGolfNut Thanks for the reply. I am hitting JPX919 Hot Met Pro. Bought them last year after I got rid of my Ping 410 shovels. Do you think it with be worth trading in for the JPX921 HM pros. I must admit I like my irons and am hesitant to trade but would if technical advances are worth the new investment. Shooting as an 8 handicap.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 921 are an evolution not a revolution so advancements would be marginal and would have to be seen over the entire season rather than in a session. Feel is improved which helps for understanding ball striking and they spin fractionally more like for like..... 👍
      Parting with your hard earned is in this case completely up to you if you feel the benefits are worth it 👍

I have asked for a Hot Metal pro 4 iron with the loft increased from 19 degrees to 22, to blend in with my MB/MMC set. I like the option of combining the Hot Metal/Hot Metal Pro with the Mizuno Fly-Hi hybrids which are made to match with the Hot Metals. I'm not sure how well these limit the gaps in a combined set, but it has to be better than using other hybrids. I think a proper fitting would likely clear up any issues in the gapping.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely would Bill. Going somewhere with a great understanding of the product and with great technology helping can ensure you get the right gapping for your bag. Blending those clubs would work exceptionally well.

    There is one factor that Ping provides I an not sure if you mentioned... Power loft spec and Retro loft spec along with the Standard spec which provides for more fitting options and Arcos if you are in that mid hdcp and want to gather real swing data for improvement. With respect to sound and feel, yes that goes to Mizzuno all day long. No surprise there. However if you are a long time Ping G series fan you won't care about the sound in fact its even a tad better than the G410. A small tad that is :)

      They both offer near on identical levels of forgiveness but the Pro has a slightly smaller profile and look to it. The Pro having a thinner top line and reduced offset doesn't change its forgiveness in any way but does open the club up to players looking for a more players inspired look.

    Awesome videos, I have been playing a blended set of MP20MB/MMC/HMBs and thinking of going back to the JPX line - specifically the HM Pro, largely because I still want a clean look at address and ability to shape it when I want to, but a bit more forgiveness. These blended set seemed like a great idea, and was great on the simulator, but, there's something disorienting about picking up what feels like a different club each time I go to hit an iron...HMB on those longer irons, MMC for a couple shots here and there, then MB in the lower scoring irons. I am not sure, but, I think it just messes with me mentally :D One thought for you on the swing speed difference though, between the 425 and the JPX line you have noticed - and how much of it has to do with that AWT shaft? You may have mentioned that in a video I missed, but, I definitely have situations where I swing a couple mph faster or slower depending on the shaft in a club. Many years ago, I played the PING I-10s with the AWT shaft, and I liked the feel of them at the time, but, they were not a great fit for me swing speed wise.

    • @AskGolfNut

      Hi harvok47, just wanted to see why you were blended on all 3 MP heads, as they all have very different (in players head terms) places on the face where strike is most efficient or at least definitely places on the face where strike is more forgiving. Usually the Blades are blended with HMB as MMC has a distinct misshit forgiveness from toe shots due to the tungsten insert in the toe. The blades and HMB (with tungsten both sides of middle) have quite different effectiveness from those misses.... Not normally something I've seen, or ever fitted to be fair.... 👍

  • @stephendibari5010

    Great head to head! With your $ what would you choose ?
    Playing off a 2.4 handicap mostly due to a great short game, especially putting, my iron ball striking could use help on mishits especially toe hits so these might be a better option for me instead of Ping i210’s... Having said that, I Would like to see a head to head of the i210’s to JPX Forged or MP-20 MMC (which ever you think is the better match up against the i210’s)

      @AskGolfNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Toe biased I would stick with the JPX921, probably Forged in the 7 or 8 to PW then 5 and 6 in HM Pro 👍

      @@AskGolfNut thanks for the advice Jay! Unfortunately my custom fit won’t be until spring 2022. I have bone on bone arthritis in my left hip and it’s getting worse day by day. Been going for PT and plan on getting hip replacement surgery later this year in November/December.
      Graphite shafts will be my pick, coming off rotator cuff surgery in December 2019 will need less shock and vibration to my shoulder.
      In 2017 I was custom fit for JPX 900 Forged, I wasn’t crazy about the feel with Boron nor the finish. In fact the grooves on the 8 iron collapsed after only about 20 rounds ! The finish became blemished and kind of dirty looking.
      I know the JPX 921 forged have Chromoloy as do the HM pro’s so this wouldn’t be an issue with feel nor finish.
      One of the reasons I would lean towards Ping is the Hydro Pearl finish in the irons and wedges. I’ve seen the amazing wet spin retention on the Glide 3.0’s so that maybe a deal breaker
      I’m definitely going to compare the i210’s comboed with either i500’s or G425’s against the JPX 921 Forged comboed with HM Pro’s and will go with the clubs that give me the best numbers and look/feel !!

There are many aspects as to why which would be extremely lengthy over youtube comment but going somewhere trustworthy, that uses head measuring data that also coaches uses it and also somewhere that doesn't make commission from any potential sales to guarantee bias of information against selling etc....
