As someone else who is diving into the foray of solo RPG and using emulators/oracles to lessen the mental load for GM's, this is a great format! I really enjoyed the back and forth with real-time playing and your behind-the-scenes commentary. I'm excited to see what else you guys are able to create with this! :)
This was brilliant! Loved it and made so much more sense seeing it used like this. Thanks so much for doing this Trevor. Great story/plot too! Love your stuff, pal! 🙂
This is extremely enjoyable, your usual amazingly high standard.... but your player duo are also excellent role players and enhance the tale massively. Isn`t it fun and easy to DM properly when your players help the experience along by their own good immersion.
Linda I find it fascinating how little comes from the dice and how much is plucked from Trevor’s imagination. There were very few rolls that were not yes/no and almost everyone was answered yes. The only truly random event was Lord Ren arriving early. The players suggested the monster and they planned to allow it to attack their pursuers. Which is not a criticism, far from it, but more a comment that Mythic is a scaffold for his imagination rather than a conductor.
That’s all Mythic is: an organizing principle for your own ideas. No one can create in a vacuum; Mythic channels your own creative impulses in a structured way to provide internal cohesiveness and consistency. Where it shines, for me, is constantly threatening to derail any preconceived notions you might have as to where the “narrative” is taking you. When a random event comes up, it’s a golden opportunity to throw yourself a curve ball, and be forced to react to unforeseen circumstances - just as you would as a player in a well-run ttrpg.
Another triumph! Also highlights why I think of this whole genre as "GMulation" instead of solo play -- because you can use "solo" tools to supplement the GM like this video, or to play a multiplayer "solo" GM-less game, and so on
I'd think that utilizing the Mythic card deck(s) would also help to speed up it's use during play. Being able to simply draw a card and check the appropriate section for each consultation, instead of rolling and checking charts, would save some reference time. I picked up the MGME and Adventure Crafter decks not long ago and it looks to be a very swift method once you're familiar with the system. Plus the PoD cards are good thick quality.
thats very true. but i do think theres an important difference between using it solo and with other people. which is that theres other people. i think its gonna be important to not try to stay behind the screen as one might be used to, because then theres gonna be moments where the players are just sitting there, waiting for the "gm". instead i would try to do it all above board, because no one knows where its going anyway, and that way everyone can help out with the "making it all make sense in context" bit, which is good for so many reasons
Great show! Very promising and looking forward to the next episode. I love the "abbreviated" actual play here, sticking to the story and highlights. The behind the scenes segments is brilliant! 🙂
Well this was super cool! I'm even further intrigued by the Mythic system but those impro skills are uncanny! Oh and the players are great of course! How they immerse themselves in their characters and the world. All the little details relating to how they interact with the environment conjure life into the telling.
Trevor, someone introduced me to Mythic Variations 2 and I'm loving the "detail roll" for answering questions other than yes/no questions. Have you looked at any of the more recent Mythic material? It'd be fun to watch you use it.
Amazing GMing and amazing example of the Emulator in practice! I'm a GM (the "eternal" kind) and recently I've been intrigued with the world of Solo roleplaying, but particularly because of the tools. I've become intensely interested in playing Ironsworn as a co-op experience with my fiancee (who is a part of my regular RPG group), but also using the Mythic Emulator for my regular sessions, to help me in times of need. This could give me so much more freedom, because sometimes I just need an answer in order to improvise the rest; a nudge in the right direction. The idea of using the Emulator to play solo/coop sessions and "test" monsters, systems an whatnot sounds terrific too. There's so much I want to play but also just so much we can also cover in a year with an online session every fortnight or so... This could mean I could play to my heart's content with my sweetheart without necessarily having to focus on a 1GM-1PC type of deal and actually enjoying the adventure with her as another player. Yes, I'm liking this outlook a lot. I have just ordered a physical copy of the Emulator and look forward to using it!
There are many other series here for me to see yet, so I'm guessing that you might have explained this before... but what is that contraption you show in the beginning where you have basically buttons with screens on them for rolling d100s, d10s, etc? Also, do you ever consider trying Foundry for your games? It's way better than the clunky Roll20 interface (I'm so glad I got rid of it, hahah) and a guy has made an AMAZING Mythic GME module! It's perfect for online GMing like this
This was absolutely fantastic. As a fellow GM who loves random inspiration this seems perfect. I also just love hearing insight into what you're thinking as it happens. Amazing show!!
I love this! I've been using the Mythic GM Emulator for a couple years now since I found this show and it's improved my DMing twofold. Also nice touch playing 5e even though you don't like it lol
Are there more videos of Trevor GMing? It’s been years since I’ve GM’d so watching will be a refresher course in style and description. This style is engaging.
I have a feeling our next dnd campaign is going to be Mythic generated. I can't wait. Well, I mean, I have to wait until this campaign is over when and IF they kill Strahd in the battle that has finally began with him and his undeadness. But not too far off, I believe I have a big sell with mythic because I shared this show with my players and at least one is just as addicted to the the content as I am.
I'm currently running an Ironsworn campaign with some friends on Roll20. I have played several solo IS campaigns, and I started using the oracles too much. To the point that my players were starting to feel like their choices didn't really matter because some random oracle roll was going to take them into left field again. So I have reduced how much I use the oracles and have started including some pre-plotted adventures. Like Edbert asking for details from the lizard shaman, who couldn't give any because he hadn't rolled them. So I've cut my oracles for group play about 50% and I think my groups appreciates it. Though they still roll a lot of Double / Complications. :)
This was excellent! One small suggestion, assuming this video is targeting 5e players it would be helpful to have an embedded link at the beginning to your mythic GME explanation video for viewers who havent used emulators before
I just played solo (mythic and others), and I've planned to introduce some friends to rpg playing it with Mythic. Never did it. :( But it seems very good, i think i should try to do it again!
The most useful useless skill for a DM is knowing how to read tarot cards. Once you know the meanings of the 4 suits, and the numbers 1-14, and the characters of the Major suit, combining all of them leads to endless possibilities. It's a lot like an inkblot image
TFW you realize the video says Part One lol. I love this behind the scenes look and I'm willing to take Mythic to my own games as well. It seems to work really well in a traditional GM + Players setting and planning is overrated anyways. Love the content as always!
I am really interested in you running a co-op GMless campaign with more people using oracle, where you and other players contribute in imagining the meaning of the oracles. Well, for now I will enjoy Five Parsecs campaign and I'm not even there yet. In the middle of Edbert's naval battle. Edit : well this channel is Me, Myself & Die, but sometimes We, Ourselves & Dices is okay, right?
I absolutely loved this. I have never used Mythic in a group setting before. Question: Did you mute yourself when you did the asides, or were the players privy to all the "behind the screen" stuff as you were doing it?
As I said in another comment, this channel is guilty, guilty, guilty . Now have to update my NPC list of Culprits of my Gming disease, Mythic, Trevor and Now Glorious Sir Vincent !!! 🤭
Wow! This was top notch! All of a sudden I want to DM again but with just a couple of players and Mythic to guide the story. I was wondering, you've mentioned before you use Mythic for group games, how do your players react to you pausing to check the oracle etc? Does it slow the game down much? Do they just get used to it?
My pausing is just for this video. All the mental gymnastics I do out loud for this video in order to demonstrate the process, happen in a normal game the instant I see the results of the roll (in the best cases!). So there’s very rarely a significant pause for my players.
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG Thanks for the insight. I can be a bit slow with the Mythic interpretations hence the query. I did run a session with mythic once when my group's numbers were low and they really enjoyed it, but for some reason I never tried again. I must rectify that.
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG Thanks for the video. I wonder how this format would go if you included the players ONLY with the interpretation of the Oracle working out what the subject and action words mean. Obviously you yourself have got quick at doing this over time. But I wonder for new DMs getting help from the players might make it fun for them too, as they all discuss what it could mean and the DM picks the best idea or gets an idea from their inputs. A few minutes may pass or more, but they wont really notice that, as they become part of the story telling process. Also might take the stress off the DM. I suppose this idea could be for the whole process, it certainly would be entertaining to see what other people in the group come up with, especially when a good idea gells into a great idea.
If I understand correctly, the mythic event focus table in chapter 3 Randomness, gives random rolls which include PC positive and PC negative results since they can have random events and effects happen to them as well. There are many options so as to not have the same results multiple times. :)
Interesting. Normally I don’t like watching RPG streams as there’s far too much navel gazing and small talk. This works much better because it is very focused. I suspect it’s been heavily edited to keep the video concise which suits me. If not these three know each other so well there’s little chit chat or disagreement.
Mythic GM Emulator is fun but for me it's to ambigious especialy with Mythic Variations I and II. You should check out Scarlet Heroes - it is an OSR game with asian vibe and streamlined solitaire rules for one hero. Maybe 4th sezon could use it ;)
I love how you're just embracing the fact that you don't know 5e at all, but are still running it just fine.
As someone else who is diving into the foray of solo RPG and using emulators/oracles to lessen the mental load for GM's, this is a great format! would love to see it with the second edition!
This is extremely enjoyable, your usual amazingly high standard.... but your player duo are also excellent role players and enhance the tale massively. Isn`t it fun and easy to DM properly when your players help the experience along by their own good immersion.
It's fascinating to watch all the details come to life from nothing.
Another wonderful show! Keep up the great work Trevor. Thank You!

Please , more of this video types! It is interesting to see how you use mythic! Thanks
Yes! This is excellent, thank you!
Great idea, but wow, twice the work for you to GM and tell us what you are doing! Thanks, Trevor! 👏
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
Love to see the chanel grow. Trevor ist such a cool guy. Keep it flowin' ;)

Great ideia! It's cool see how and when you use the Mythic, and how you turn it into story!
This was extraordinarily enjoyable. Very much looking forward to part two.
Also it was fun watching how you DM a group of players. They were very entertaining.
What a great example of how Mythic works. This is inspirational to me, keen to try it myself actually :D
This is really good. I really keen to see where this goes. Thanks for sharing.

i'd like to see it, too. the focus in detail checks are great!
Love it... Another fantastic show Trev.

Guess I have no choice besides becoming a fan of Sir Vincent now
Will season 4 be a co-op? Would be killer! Just sayin' ... ;)

So it's Sir Vansont, as opposed to Vincent 😊
The only thing missing is the soundtrack. It makes the narrative so much more immersive.
I do have a question and I may have missed it in the video. Did they know you were using the GME?
Yup.
❤️❤️❤️
Good job, very interesting video. I think that the player characters should not be included in the list of characters tho.
