Awesome walk-through video. Are use river willow. Only because it’s common and abundant where I am. A fair amount sturdier then yuca.
Nice emphasis on lining up the notches. When I first attempted this trap I followed the pictures of an old survival book and I had to redo my top, and bait sticks 😂. Thanks for the video guys.
woodcraft can be tricky to learn from books, i have difficulty with that too

That's the first time I have seen anyone put rocks on the sides to narrow access. Great idea! Wish you could have shown it tripped with a kill in it.

Mine are slightly different but the same principal. These may quite simply be one of the absolute easiest traps to make. It can be done without a knife. But of course a steel knife is a great tool at all times.
I like that you're using a small saw from my multi-tool to get a precision cut into how deep you want to go into the stick. A lot of people just use the knife and baton down a little bit instead. Not as precise as using a small saw.

While setting the trap place a medium round stone under the flat rock. If you drop the flat rock or the trap springs while you are setting it up it will hit the stone and not your fingers.
I like these videos more, they're more useful than the gear videos. Went on my first major hike (desert hike) started at 5am and didn't finish until 11pm. Was the last person on the trail, was 35 degrees outside and windy. All while hiking through it I was remembering your videos of survival on how to cook the local desert foods and how to start a fire using the knives you recommend. It got so bad I debated building a shelter and trying hunker down for the night. Please make more videos like this, they help more than a gear review do.

As far as if I ever used this, no. SE Texas has a depressing lack of rocks. I suppose I could use a large log, but why do that when you got snare's, ya know? That'd be another great video presentation.

excellent tutorial on how to make the figure 4 trap, I've seen others but never gone into the detail you have done here James, I'm thinking this is good knowledge in a survival situation not something i'm going to use in everyday use, as you said this might be a illegal trap to use which i'm sure is here where I live, I also like how you said set up in your backyard and have beer and practice cool

Try the promontory peg deadfall, it’s much easier to make and is just as effective
ive never tried that one but ill start practicing soon

Your trap will work better if you cut a thick flat head screwdriver head on the end of your angle stick touching the flat rock. It will support the rock and will fall more quickly then using just the flat top of the stick.
I like to put my Flat Rock underneath the top rock so that when they come together the rock smash together on the prey and kill it quicker.

no not yeat, though ill be elaborating on that later thsi summer. i bought my hat from a grocery store for like 20 bucks, its lasted me years.
WILL THOSE YUCA STALKS BREAK OFF AT THE BASE? AND IS THERE A WAY TO INCORPARATE THORNS OR SPINES TO HELP KILL AND GRIP THE PREY? THAT BE COOL.
not that i can think of. plus cutting the prey, would speed up the decomposing process so i wouldnt recommend it
Do you prefer fig4 over Paiute?
my problem with the paiute is that it requires cordage which is extra work, especially when you have to create cordage off the land

Love your videos watch all day. Check out hedgehog leather works channel you know with the tracker sheaths. He does an improved deadfall video with that long branch that hooks underneath instead of on the side. :)

Informative but not much volume even with the volume turned all the way up.
Threw in a like, but I'm not going to watch 30 minutes of video for a basic technique. Trim these down IMO.
i appreciate the comment. but some people learn at different speeds, feel free to fast forward through segments.
