  • India is the world's largest importer of asbestos fibre. It is also the world's largest producer and user of asbestos based products. In this video we uncover the hazards of asbestos cement roofing and how in the word's of India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, 'it can enter air, water, and soil from the weathering, weathering, renovation, or demolition of manufactured asbestos products. People are likely to be exposed to asbestos through inhalation of airborne fibres,'
The same ministry in the past in it's vision statement had stated that: 'Alternatives to asbestos may be used to the extent possible and the use of asbestos may be phased out'

This is an eye opener. It is believed by many that asbestos is banned in India. But, only asbestos mining is banned.
The fibres are released on weathering as per India's environment ministry.

India is really a third class country - for its poor citizens. For politicians and rich, it is a first class country

Many a times over the past many years I have addressed this issue with central government and more importantly the state government and Kolkata municipal corporation. I have requested them that tiled roofs and asbestos roofs are dangerous and toxic, also the roofs collapse when hit by cyclone and long monsoon season. The government doesn't provide small funds to poor people in urban areas to replace these by corrugated metal sheet rooftop. Also KMC doesn't give sanction to replace tiled or asbestos roofs with alternative improved roofing materials as better urban housing facility for the citizens.

Suppose, asbestos utilities were invented only recently and wider in use in the developed countries as it was once:
The Wire would ridicule India not adopting it!!!
    Such an independent journalism!!!

It's difficult to believe "wire" has a news apart from their standard propaganda against the so called "right". I appreciate this kind of genuine and valid criticism done by wire. Last valid one I saw was for overcrowded train. Although the previous governments are more to blame for railways extreme backwardness.
