This programme needs to be shown to schools all over the world. Have you noticed its all young entrepreneurs leading the way. I'm in my 60's and these guys and girls are way ahead of my age group. We'll done India.
They are not getting rid of the waste, they are shuffling it. What they (and everyone, really) need is a way to produce less junk. Putting out "alternatives" that are inconvenient and cost more won't take and that's that. Introducing "filth" into everything will cause more problems and solve none. Personally, I don't want other peoples garbage imported into my country for the sake of "saving the planet". We all need is for companies to take on the brunt of the pollution their products make for the sake of profits. I don't want to pay extra tax just because Nestle and Coke want to use cheap packaging. In the meantime, since the previous proposition is an "impossible" task that will take decades, we need a cheaper way to deal with accumulating garbage. Existing technologies obviously can't be applied to countries like India and China because it makes zero financial sense for them.
Government got huge limitations. Main reason for carbon emission is farmland burning by farmers, but if they don't do it they would have to adopt chemical alternatives and destroy soil content. Or else the govt has to create restriction on farm output which would cause rise in food price globally. The only way was to privatise the farm sector of india and put accountability on these private entities which could have made possible by the recent 'Farmlaw bill' but thanks to foreign media, influencers and anti-nationals. Such a reform was never made. 😑. I would say the 50% of reason for Indias struggle is because of the people and their old mindset. Indians won't welcome reforms
meanwhile other documentaries show that landfill management in California prohibited employee to scrap or recycling... They just bury it and create a higher hill

No matter how much the waste management improves in India, most of the population never care to keep this country clean 😭 very saddening but true!
Even American doesn’t keep cleanliness , they have government workers with big trucks to carry and transport waste plus if u make ur front road dirty, city send you letter for fine
Westerners are not clean ,but their workers carry tickets for fine… if they feel ur hours front is dirty before picking that garbage they stick ticket as fine … and u will open the door with empty garbage but now 1000$ fine
Europe and America dump their waste in Asian countries and oceans, Garbage of the size of Houston is floating in chunks in Pacific Ocean

I love the fact reporting by Business Insider. Even more I enjoy the content. It's good to see how many of my countrymen are fighting pointless pollution. My heart goes to those like Prameshwar. I've seen them working hard, the things they go through are unspeakable. Makes me mad when I hear people complain about their desk jobs.

The Surgane Tableware has it 100% right. Im tired of seeing companies that promote more eco friendly products just for the marketing, but use plastic in 90% of their process. The guy has the right mindset, i hope he grown world wide
Excellent observation, you get an A+ for applying critical thinking! Just like the flower recycling seen in the video... the flower recycling, unfortunately, did nothing to address the arsenic, cadmium, lead and pesticides issues, instead, it simply redistributed the toxins into "compost" and "incense sticks" which could very well cause health problems for people (and animals) who use the compost to grow food and use/breath in the incense on a daily bases :'(

What I love about this video is the solutions people find to turn waste into products. I find that incredible.
Most of this "solution" is nothin but thendy and hype projects to gain free money from gov and eco enthusiasts. No actual effect. They need centralised and large scale sorting stations and recycling factories to produce less shit, also as more burning facilities. Also cities need cheap gas and electricity to stop shitting like hell. No chanse to do it without gov-level supervision and financy.

What you should find sad is how utterly insignificant this is to the larger problem and the propagation of a culture that tell you that the user is the problem and not the manufacturer. All those recycling bottle videos are made to make you feel bad while coca cola keeps making bottles out of new plastic.

I was in the Indian state of Sikkim in 2007 and they had just legislated to eliminate single use plastic. I’m surprised and discouraged it’s taking so long to move south.
Sikkim is a part of Nepal and will return soon.

If Nepal was economically stable and had international support, we would have had more than Darjeeling and Sikkim back. In future it shall return for sure. And stop sending your Bihari, Marwadis and South Indians to Nepal to steal their remittance and tourism wealth. I know Nepal offers more labor wage than India. Its a fact your government intentionally crippled Nepal's economy by not allowing them trade route to sea. Stop making stories up dude. India has been one of the major protectors of Nepal in terms of defence, military, finances and what not. Otherwise you guys would've been occupied by China long back. I've never seen any Nepali speak ill about India, everr. You're the first one. This video is incredibly humbling. I am feeling deep gratitude that I was born in New Zealand. A county where we breathe the fresh air, plant our vegetables, hunt our wild game & fish freely. India would be a difficult place to live working as a scrap picker or sewer cleaner.
We are a large country , waste-occupying land is only .000001% only. we know how to manage our waste. if you don't like our country , do not come. your knowledge about India and Indians are very little. Shame on you.

Garbage workers honestly get too much hate, you'd literally live in a mountain of trash if it weren't for them. Big applause to those that work in the garbage and sanitation industry!

I bought a beautiful living room suit about 3 years ago. The salesman never mentioned it to me but when it was delivered I was reading the tags. The sofa and chair were made completely out of recycled plastic bottles. To look at it or sit on it you would never know. It is beautiful and I have been very pleased with it.
Recycled plastic breaks down quickly. Your sofa will be going back to the dump site soon.
@@robertcornelius3514 Its true that recycling plastics over and over degrades its strength. But a sofa is usually a wood frame with polyester cushionings. Unless youre throwing, jumping and pulling on them, no loss will be had. Besides, the loss in strength is so marginal that it will be unnoticeable.
Yak. My sofa is LEATHER and metal and cotton and wood. U imagine what fumes your set emanates into the air. The only thing what should be made out of plastic is MORE PLASTIC. Why produce sofa out of plastic bottles and bags when u can produce bags and bottles again and again and again

@@Pooopers I respect your opinion. I'm 50/50 on that. It is gross 🤢 but then they did wash, put thru some chemicals and some other processes. Looked good to me.
Think of the recycled plastic bottles. I rinse mine out before I take to bin, when I do save them 😉🙂 I've seen nasty milk gallons, plastic bottles with chewing tobacco or cigarette butts in them. To think that gets recycled, add water and off it goes to the shelves. A lot of people drink bottled water. I do buy for when company comes over and I do drink it too, but not often as we have well water.

I feel this goes under the biodegradable not so much recyclable.

I think recycling bad products isn’t good.
We should stop the industrial production of goods, entirely. That would resolve our waste issue.

All these recycling projects are possible because of a very low price of menial labour. And even then, many of them are not profitable.

They won't be. They are low caste, it's their ancestral job to clean sewers.
Problem with Chuk- the distributors charge such a high margin, that it becomes impossible to buy it in bulk for restaurant takeaway packaging. I know this, I was a reseller- I felt so guilty even adding my own margin of 1-2 rupees. Chuck has to list MRP on their products so their products seek more.
I have not seen it in any US restaurants. Aluminum is still king but Recycled Cardboard takeaway packaging is catching up.
@Recipes and Songs - I have seen Chuck beginning to show up at some US retailers but it is quite expensive unfortunately.
Dont buy their products, it's all about greed for them!!

It warms my heart to see such useful and innovative recycling. Way to go! I recall reading about an old man in Cambodia who took discarded plastic yogurt cups and molded them into artificial limbs for bomb victims. I experimented with molding banana leaves (and also large bamboo sheathes) into recyclable bowls or plates. However, it's sad that recycling (and cleaning sewers) is often harmful to the lungs and bodies of the good people who are recycling.

@@omkarpadale243 Omkar, it's easy to dismiss things. But it takes some effort and vision to do tangible good. I've planted an average of 1 tree per day for the past 36 yrs. I don't have a home library, because every book or magazine I read, I then pass it on to others. Chok dee ('good luck' in Thai).

@@BlackoutGootraxian I was 21 yrs in northern Thailand, 25 yrs in northern California, and now in Hawaii. I plant trees and other useful things - wherever I happen to reside. If there are mature fruit-bearing fruit trees in the public part of your neighborhood, chances are it may have been a nutcase like me who planted it/them decades ago. Same for lumber trees. I've planted hundreds of pine, teak, rosewood, maka, acacia also, besides fruit trees and bushes. I've even planted ground covers. I just watched some videos about dry parts of Africa, and am thinking: it would be sooooo worthwhile to get trees & bushes planted there. As it is: the terrain looks to be 99% sand, with a few scrubby things growing. I could write a book about drought-tolerant plants which are also useful.

Honestly, all of these ideas so wonderfully creative! I truly hope and pray that India is able to get in front of such a toxic problem. No one should have to live in trash and sewage. In Mexico they recycle also almost anything. They make sandals out of old tyres, beautiful lanterns out of old tins and glas pieces. They made beautiful flowers and traditional dolls out of washed old rags and paper and so much more.

Idk if Business Insider has read the latest report by NatGeo, but US is the largest producer of plastic waste, way above India and China. Even with 1/4 of total population, an avg American produces 6 times more plastic waste than an avg Indian.
Ofcourse they've been shipping and dumping all their waste to countries like Bangladesh.

And there's a reason why burning plastic to produce electricity isn't that good an idea as it may sound and why it is not widely adopted in even in the 'civilized' countries. Had it been that easy to get rid of plastic, it wouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

I agree fully. Only the huge companies creating and causing these issues being held accountable and forced to stop their crimes, will cause a large change to happen and help fully stop this system that is killing us all. But also it has to start somewhere,, and it's so admirable and inspiring that so many people are already doing the work, and they're creating the change already, and at least there's hope with that still.
Everyone who buys their products is complicit. If they demand a change and are willing to pay more, it will happen.

That can be said about any nation that are dependant on mainly dependent on fossil fuels; irrespective to this video, it does not showcase your whole population's actions, these actions are of the few. First awareness should be prioritised, then innovation from certain people.

In India, people don't have viable, economical alternatives to the sources of pollution. But people are more conscious of their environ (as can be deduced by the number of ecological corporates with their own ideas are emerging). On the other hand, there was a survey published recently which sought the motive of US citizens for purchasing EVs. It turns out, most of them purchased EVs because of technology and not because of ecological reasons
@@SShreyas17 yes, that as well of it not being economically viable, but some people are not aware of the causes, for example in Brazil, mass deforestation is done by locals since they don't know the consequences.

It already is. I went to coledge 20 years ago and this sort of thinking was being discussed. A lot of my friends presented recicling projects.

Excellent approach to the problem. Much of our “waste” today is just raw materials that we haven’t discovered the uses for yet. Plastic is every bit as useful as oil and one day we may even mine it from old landfills. Some landfills have a higher gold content than commercial grade ores. One mans waste is another’s treasure.

If you can find a commercial use for a waste stream then it ceases to be waste and becomes a valuable commodity that funds its segregation from the general waste stream. Cement does indeed produce co2 but rather less than firing ceramic tiles perhaps. Plastic is now processable into marine fuel oil and that is key in making it a valuable commodity rather than waste. We all have a personal part to play and governments are sadly not really part of the cure. It’s all of us as individuals who are responsible to tread lightly in our everyday lives. Small steps and not giant WEF profit seeking leaps!

This is a fantastic documentary and I am particularly moved by the meticulous hard work of the waste collector and processor which is unimaginable in the developed world.
You do have to bury the standards of health and living conditions of those workers with your recognition of improvements. Does your hope depend on exploiting people like this around the world? Do suspect your economic model will have to push people down to this level in economies that dont have such "class" of people yet? In other words, have you noticed the steps in developed countries have taken to create this system of impoverishment? Maybe developed countries should import them? Your desired improvements has cancer laced into it.
Start dealing with your own waste, stop exporting your garbage to us. Don't be so proud if your streets and roads are spot free clean. Remember someone has to deal with your waste just to earn his living. Be considerate, minimize your usage, go package free, push your government for plastic free packaging, refilling supermarkets. And more importantly stop blaming Asian and poor countries for waste ffs

It just breaks my heart to see how much people struggle, I just hope everyone who sees this video does their part in minimising waste as much as possible, we may not have a very large garden in cities but can often find enough space to do composting for home waste, it's a lot easier to control things at source than to face a mountain of unsorted garbage in the final stages. We can carry reusable sturdy cloth bags or even backpacks for shopping daily essentials, we can easily minimise food and other biodegradable waste, do some local composting, each and everyone of us can make a difference and it will all add up. We can try to take a slightly shorter shower, walk once in a while instead of taking a bike or car for even short trips of less than 5Km. If we can all be a bit considerate it will make a difference.

People don't seem to get the concept of recycling garbage.
Yes, the recycled product may have some harmful stuff from the source material. You can't do much about it. It's already out there.
Best what you can do is put it into another product so that it takes longer going back into the air or ground water. More importantly, because you bought a recycled product, you eliminated the need to produce 1 fresh unit of that product, which helped to slightly reduce creation of more fresh garbage.
Even if you take the worse example, the incense with potentially some cadmium and arsenic in it, by using recycled flowers, you reused the arsenic which was already out there and reduced the need to mine new arsenic out of the ground.
Additionally, the cadmium and arsenic are predominantly contained in the other parts of the flower (those getting composted), not the petals, and what little is there is basically the background ubiquitousness of the material naturally; it's the issue of all those tons of flowers going into the Ganges that concentrates things, like how lead is just fine to use in many things, even to be handled, but the sheer amount of lead pollution in water from concentrating those low levels of lead has caused lead poisoning in fishes and higher predators that themselves concentrate the lead levels from all the smaller animals they consume that themselves consumed small amounts of lead.
Also, arsenic isn't mined for the flowers, it's naturally there, lmao. Like how hydrangea naturally have small amounts of cyanide in them, or oleander has oleandrin, datura has tropane alkaloids, and so on and so forth.
@@KainYusanagi by my point regarding the arsenic, what i meant was, as the flowers which were thrown away are being used for the incense, there is no need to grow new flowers to manufacture the incense sticks. This effectively reduces new arsenic from being released into the environment.

@@MegaRazzzz Flowers weren't naturally grown for incense sticks, charcoal from other sources was used for that; plants also act as sequestering stores for chemicals like arsenic or cadmium that exist in trace amounts of soil everywhere; what the Ganges system was experiencing was the trace amounts of those elements being leached out of the soil and then dumped into the water in those offerings where they leached out into the water, and that affected the water table. So, no, new arsenic was constantly being released into the environment, unfortunately.

This is how recycling should work, but with fair pay for labor. The United States needs to take notes. If only governments would encourage and help with these sorts of efforts, using subsidies and other incentives. Have Waste Management work together with companies.

The US Governments "subsidies" creates moral hazards. All the recycling in India is possible because their wages are low and they have no safety regulations. Nothing in this video is legal in America. Not a single thing. There was a thermal depolymerization plant setup in Carthage, MO but the EPA tried to shut them down (legally failed) and then they contacted their friends at the USDA to cut off their supply of offal (their feedstock) which forced them into bankruptcy. They were producing barrels of synthetic biodiesel from sewage and biowaste at a cost of $35/barrel.

I have little hope that India would step up to the plate for their citizens, their government is poor and they don't have a good track record. If the Indian government were to do anything, it'd be to enforce some sort of living wage and safety net programs, but they do not have the money for such things.
For reference, despite India having the second largest population totalling 1.4 billion people, their GDP is currently $3.6 trillion. The US, the third most populated at 331 million people, has a GDP of $21 trillion.
In the US, these things need to go through the full parliamentary process, which is an absurd headache that just isn't going to happen. Largely because Waste Management is a private company, as are all recycling plants, not a government entity. that's why most Americans don't recycle, and why many do not have access to even simple waste disposal- trash collection is expensive. It's a huge fine and possible jail if you are caught dumping your trash in someone else's bin or emptying your household dumpster in a public one. The majority of recycled items aren't even recycled, they get taken straight to a landfill, because companies don't want to put the money into sorting, cleaning, and actually recycling anything. Recycling isn't cheap and it's a massive waste of money.
Most other countries would also need a big shindig through the whole government to get something like this done. Talking to a single government entity is like talking to a lamp post, they can't do much without the whole government's cooperation.
*[EDIT]* I originally said India's GDP was $2.6 trillion, but I was corrected that it is closer to 3.6. the 2.6 number is outdated, from 2020.

We have the DEQ at state level in each state, and the EPA- Environmental Protection Agency federally. the citizens are supposed to demand the changes necessary. But some of the people who haven't been here for generations, have no clue about how our government works. it works by our citizens .

It's not throughout the entire country though. A lot of mountain regions and several states manage it a lot better. Some of the cities like Delhi gets trapped bcoz of neighbouring Haryana which is known for agriculture and burns stubble in huge quantities so by the onset of winters is where it is worst. The AQI in Delhi and NCR (national capital region like Ghaziabad which are neighbouring regions of Delhi) reaches upto 500 plus which is insane for an average American but it doesn't stay at that level the whole year. It's only around this time and it's got more to do with ppm bcoz of the burned waste in the air. A lot of the states like Uttarakhand or north eastern states have clean air throughout the year

Just put that comparison in your head and you instantly would start feeling claustrophobic lol but cities like Delhi, Mumbai have it way worse than the rest of the country. Delhi is the capital so it naturally gets more attention a lot of people of neighbouring states migrate to Delhi as it has one of the best educational institutions so over the years it has been the life of many people overloading the capital in hopes of better future for themselves and their kids. I kid you not some of the metro stations in Delhi used to get so crowded that while waiting for the train you would get squished in between the crowd and your feet will be lifted off the ground. The crowd literally will get you inside the train with you not even moving a limb. Actually did happen with me once 😁 was quite an experience in canaught place haha. I seriously feel tourists should start exploring the beauty of North east India and Uttarakhand. The governments of these regions barely ever advertise for them. I'm glad they atleast have started recognising southern states like Kerela which is a lot more cleaner and well managed than most of other regions in the whole country.

I did this work in Canada.
We wore hip waders, rubber gloves, face shield if needed.
Used high pressure pumps to do most of the work.
Still had to unclog grates and drains by hand. Wearing PPE makes a difference but still done by hand. If you wear a respirator you won't smell anything but we rarely did.
