    • How To Make Shoes - Ge...
    00:00 Introduction
Silent movie in color from the 1930's, showing how a pair of Goodyear Welted men's shoes is made. Not much has changed ever since, but this shoe documentary gives a most interesting insight into how a pair of shoes is made.
    00:41 Bend
Used for the outsole. A machine stamps the soles to size and ensures they are of uniform thickness. The innersoles must have the same shape and in order to be able to sew them properly, a canvas band is applied in the gemming process.
    04:31 The Leather Upper
The shoe uppers are cut from selected calf hides that are much softer than the soles, but they are likewise pressed to a uniform thickness.
    10:11 The Shoe Is Assembled
The sole is now tacked to the wooden last. The uppers are now pulled over the last and tacked to it.
    20:01 Finishing The Shoe
Hot vibrating irons pound the edge of the sole, giving it a hard, rounded, smooth and polished surface. Subsequently, the soles are polished with wax, and the uppers and the welt are cleaned and polished.

Believe it or not, but there are still a few shoe companies left in the US that produce shoes in a very similar way.

Thank you for sharing this amazing video showcasing the intricate process of making handmade leather shoes. The sheer skill required to make such a shoe is beyond impressive. It is an art form in the truest sense. We should support these skilled craftsmen by buying handmade shoes.

In case you are wondering, why are all machines are working constantly, it is because they were all powered by one huge steam engine! The power was transmitted with a single belt to the mechanishms.

Yes, Thom McAn. You can see the chiseled/squared forefoot which is never done since perhaps the 60s. The 50s - early-60s Allen Edmonds catalogs have a few of those types of welted/soled shoes. One of them was the McAllister, and the MacNeil was completely different before they restyled it.

Conscientiousness is the personality trait of being thorough, careful, or vigilant. Conscientiousness implies a desire to do a task well. Conscientious people are efficient and organized as opposed to easy-going and disorderly.
These people are Conscientious. If they aren't the shoes are defective, or they get their fingers ripped off. It's a job, not a game.
Those efforts are aided by innovations in technology brought into being by the work of brilliant men, and by labor reforms like the eight hour day, the forty hour week, brought into being by the bravery and solidarity of union men.

+Lekoza There was color footage of WWI... Yes, color was unusual in the 30's but not impossible. At the end of the day, the process changed very little in the following decade or two, so the process was very similar.
