    Looks like a lot of recruitment was done in the mid-1960’s! It’s a shame that there doesn’t seem to be many young people going into the shoe making trade. Those saying this isn’t handmade should familiarise themselves with how mass produced shoes are made, literally at the press of a button. Of course more operations could be manual rather than assisted by sewing machines etc (which are still tools, just as a needle or a hammer is), but then that would also increase the price substantially, as well as reducing the number of shoes made and the viability of the company. It would also be very easy to cut leather by a computer controlled machine for example, but it is still done the traditional way. Great to see traditional shoe making is still alive and well in Northamptonshire!

    Bought a pair of Cheaney Edwin's today from the factory shop in Desborough. Beautifully made, great value & the 2 gents in the shop are extremely helpful, knowledgeable & friendly. Get over there if you can.

    These are high-quality shoes, yes they use machines on parts of the process but there is still a lot of hand finishing. For complete bespoke like John Lobb you would be paying at least 5x the price, Cheaney is a good halfway house.

    I have a very dear friend that swears by Cheaney/Church. Personally, I swear by a much better elastic side boot. R. M. Williams. Perth Australia. Completely hand made also but from one piece of skin. One seam on the rear of the heel on the entire boot. Most comfortable boot I have ever worn and I have been wearing them for over 30 years. I am sure that Church / Cheaney shoes are superior but the boot...

    Excuse me, can somebody please tell me, how is this hand made shoe ? Only things that are done by human hand are handeling machines. That is handmade? I thought that handmade shoe is stitched by hand - you know - two needles. Hammering and cutting by knifes, brushing, polishing etc. Thank you.

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Firsthgyhgyhuy Lastujhujhuj Please, sir, would you be so kind to do two things:
      - send me shoes you are hand making
      - tell me, what is handmade and what is not handmade
      And please if it would be possible to stay more possitive without negative suggestions etc. I am looking for reasonable discussion.
      If you are not able to do so, please do whatever you want :-) Have a nice day

    In this case, the term "handcrafted" is really more of a marketing device. If THIS is handcrafted, what does machine crafted look like? Large automotive like machines with spinning blades throwing leather around? Nice shoes though.

      Regan Donohue I am still thinking the same way. Most of the processes are automated. They still need manpower to operate machines. I advice you to watch hand made shoe making on TH-cam, you can ser the difference.

      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Using machines to make shoes, but not in a mass production process, is called "bench made".
      Hand made refers to shoes where everything is done by hand and no machines are used in the process.
      The term hand made must not be protected then, people use it often when referring to bench made shoes.

    While it looks nice (and we need it) this isnt really handmade. This is process making. So it bothers me a little when there are lots of fine words like : the finest quality, highly skilled and craftsmen.
    They do a good job im sure (I dont want to belittle good workers) but they are not true craftsmen.
    A craftsman do the WHOLE process - idea to finished product.

    • @HughRogers609
      @HughRogers609 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ok, so a pair of Cheaneys costs $5-800 in Australia depending on style. How much 'hand crafting' do you think any company can do paying Western wages, and stay viable for the person who wants to buy high quality they can afford? Do people know the difference between handmade and bespoke? If people want to pedantically "insist" that handmade means every process is non automated and done by hand only, then you're going to be looking at $2000+ custom shoes. And I bet bespoke uses many of the processes shown here too. I'm sure most $100-200 shoes don't go through a pair of hands from start to finish, and they barely last 12 months, the process are quick and materials poor. These people will be using higher quality raw materials than anything else mass produced. Good luck to them, their product is quality.
