  • Henry 887 Tropi-Cool 100% Silicone White Roof Coating is a premium, 100% silicone, moisture-cure coating designed to reflect the sun's heat and UV rays as well as protect many types of roofs. It is specially designed to maintain maximum reflectivity of heat and UV rays as it ages.
    *100% Waterproof
    *Delivers longest lasting reflectivity and energy savings
    *Rain‐safe in 15‐minutes
    *1-coat application
    *Wide application temperature range from 35 °F to 120 °F (2 °C to 49 °C)
    *Superior UV resistance and weathering performance
    *VOC compliant - solvent‐free
    *Easy to apply by spray, roller, or brush
    *Excellent adhesion and flexibility
    Known simply as "cool roofing", this process is designed to reduce the solar radiation absorbed, which in turn means less heat is transferred inside the building.
    Cool roofs also emit away some heat normally retained by a building, cooling it further.
    A cool roof can save air-conditioning costs by as much as 40%.
    A California-based Berkeley Lab found that a clean white roof that reflects 80% of sunlight will stay about 31C cooler on a summer afternoon. The worldwide use of reflective roofing could produce a global cooling effect equivalent to offsetting 24 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide - the equivalent of taking 300 million cars off the road for 20 years.
    My whole house is so much cooler in the summer. It’s not just the 3rd floor, I feel it throughout the house. Cooling down your house and using less electricity on your air conditioner will reduce Air Pollution and Greenhouse Emissions.

    * I discovered this after I coated my roof.
    The product that you use to seal out the bleed through from asphaltic substrates and modified bitumen is called a “Bleed Blocker”. Applying a base coat of this will prevent the yellowing that occurs. It will seal out oils that can discolor the final finish coat of white silicon coating.
    I couldn’t find any Henry - Bleed Blockers but was recommended to use GE Enduris.
    There are a lot of different Bleed Blockers out there, the One-part formula Enduris Bitumen Bleed Blocker is part of the complete Enduris Roof Coatings system.

    *Throw down coarse sand while it is still wet to fix the slippery problem.* This will also allow for better adhesion in the future when another coat is applied.

      That’s a good idea! Thanks

      Not a good idea creates air pockets, loses integrity, same consistency as a sponge. Will fail miserably.

      Hogwash! It is standard practice with a long track record of success.

    Henry's says that to prevent the bleed through from modified bitumen , you should first put two coats of Dura Brite on as a bleed blocker. Says the Tropicool will adhere just fine to the Dura Brite ; although not the other way around if for some reason you tried putting Dura Brite over Tropicool .

      @Handywoman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never heard of DuraBrite. I’ll look it up. Thank you for the info.

    Also, wear sunglasses because the reflection is intense.

    I love that coating but it’s 369 plus tax almost $400 for 4.5 gallon bucket but it really works. I used it on my mobile home roof and 2 hrs later started raining like crazy the coating stayed on the roof and there was 0 leaks.

    How is the roof condition? Does your house still feel cool?

      The white tropi-cool roof coating is still holding up. Yes, my house is still cool.

    Has the roof still stay white? Do you feel any difference?

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the roof is still white. There’s some dirt that you can see but the rain cleans most of it off. I do feel a difference in the summer. My house isn’t as hot.

    I seen , people say to use the membrane mesh on the seams ? And then apply the silicone over the mesh ? What’s your reason for not .
    Thxs

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I watched a lot of videos before attempting to do my roof. A lot of roofers didn’t use it. My seams were in good shape so I thought that I could skip that step. If your seams are separating from each other I would definitely add the mesh in between applying the putty. The silicone coating is strong enough to bind everything together when applied on top of the roof putty.

    I know I'm a little late in the game here, but how is the roof handling now without the bleed blocker? Did you put any bleed blocker on the roof recently?

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t do the bleed blocker. The roof is holding up well! It’s not bright white anymore. I live right next to train tracks, and the train goes by daily. The dirt and grime of cars and the train is what mostly is on my roof now.

    • @alakai66
      @alakai66 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Handywoman That is good to know! I went to the Henry site and from what they told me is it's either/or, not both. And the tropicool brand is far superior. You patching up the seams prior to coating was the smartest thing you did. I have a similar roof that is aging and I was debating whether to re-roof or just coat it. Coating seems to be the viable option. Love the simplicity of your vids. Gives many ideas. Mahalo nui for posting them. Sorry you have to go through the trouble of the dirt from the train. For me it's my neighbor's tree! 😁😂

    Do you inow if i can apply to metal ot galvanized roof

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Silicone sealant is often the preferred choice for metal roofing systems, as it adheres well to metal and other common construction materials. It also offers excellent moisture and UV protection and has exceptional joint movement capabilities.

    Im trying to swallow the $450 per bucket but its hard... Im in south Florida and have a 16x51 flat roof section that is on the south side so it gets blasted by the sun all day everyday. I only really care about heat reflecting at this point its a newer roof so no leaks. In your opinion is it worth the cost for reducing cooling "only"?

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know the cost has doubled in the last few years like everything else. It seems to be staying at $450. Yes, I would highly recommend painting your roof for reflecting the sun. You will see a huge difference in the temperature in your house. It almost feels like a 10 degree difference. My 3rd floor always had a subtle burning wood smell from my rafters under the hot roof. The smell went completely away. I live in the Northeast.

    How many buckets did you use?

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It took about 3 buckets. When you pour it on your roof, push down on the roller. It will spread the paint out more.

    Your coating a roof not painting. Definitely should have primed the modified and definitely should have put more mills down! But I love that you’re a go getter! I coat roofs everyday so I can’t help critique lol

    Brush totally looks easier than a roller 😂

    • @Handywoman
      @Handywoman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to use a brush over a roller. Lately, I have been using chip brushes with wooden handles. They will biodegrade faster then plastic handled brushes.
