All the credit to you, Destin, for making this video but it really didn't need to be made. Game genre categorizations write themselves for the most part, and with how games are so precisely marketed the boundaries should be very clear cut. And yet The Game Awards felt it was still necessary to muddy the waters by blatantly moving the goal posts for Erdtree's inclusion into categories reserved for standalone games. As usual we can look to financial & political incentives for the root cause.
I’m okay with remakes, remasters no, and DLC definitely not… they should either have their own category or be shoved into live service. There’s no reason DLC should be considered for GOTY.
The problem with DLC as GOTY is that a company can make 2-3 DLCs and release them 3 years in a road, which means that that game can be non 3 time with the same game 😕😒😒
I one hundred percent agree. The same thing happened last year when they decided to put Resident Evil 4 remake as a game of the year contender. That spot should have been left open for new games such as Starfield, Hi FI Rush, or Hogwarts Legacy. First we got remakes, now dlc, next will be Microtransaction of the year...
When I hear someone say DLC's don't qualify for GOTY I think of Blood and Wine. I think that DLC is better than the main game. One of the things I loathe in starting a new game is to level-up. If they made that DLC a standalone game, I would have to level-up all over again. To level-up with new mechanics is an "artificial" criterion for a standalone game. A good game is simply a good game. If it was released within the award year it should qualify for GOTY. That should be the only criterion, regardless of its prerequisite accoutrements.
Elden Ring raises an interesting question about the definition of an extension, is a $30 skin an extension or a 30-hour story content an extension of a game ? ("extension" is the key word)
totally agree, neither DLC nor Remakes should be nominated for GOTY, only in their own category. Also they robbed Persona 3 Reload xD a masterfully crafted remake.
Elden Ring is the only game that could remotely compete with Black Myth Wukong. They didn't want Black Myth to win, so they had to just throw a DLC in there. So sad.
Expand it to 10 nominees No DLC No remakes unless they are substantial recreations mechanically Name the nominating and voting committee member orgs Increase fan vote to 25%
I wish people were this outraged when Blood and Wine got RPGame of the year in 2016. That was a dlc or ongoing category. That was a game category for RPGs, and both dark souls 3, deus ex, and xenoblade lost to a dlc. And they had wow legions dlc as a nominee then as well. Where was the outrage?
In the first place GotY shouldn't even take place the same year. Not only does it cultivate recency bias towards games that release late in the year close to the event, it omits games that come out that year after the nominations have been selected and of course they don't get to be nominated the next year either. It's unfair and blatantly skewed even without taking the modern social agendas into account, with them it's even more so. DLC being legible is just a cherry on top of this whole dumpster fire.
I agree, it shouldn't win GotY because Elden Ring released in 2022, this is DLC for a 2022 game. Doesn't matter the year it released, it is part of that 2022 game, a game which already won GotY, a game that already had its chance to shine. When it comes to a remake however, it depends on how much of a remake. Something like Shadow of the Colossus, Tony Hawk, etc, etc, etc, which are graphical remakes, they are nothing more than remasters, ports of older games with enhanced graphics. However, games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, FF7 Rebirth, Ys Celceta, etc. These games are so much of a departure from the original game that they are still new games. It's like The Witcher series, they were already books and then created in game form, these remakes are taking what was already written and retelling that story. Now there are some remakes that I'd really have to consider for entry, but one of which is now one of my favorite games of all time, so I probably would. That is games that change the functional design of the game so drastically, that despite everything else being the same it's a completely new experience. I'll give a few examples. Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is a graphical remake, a remaster basically, and everything is the same except for the combat. The combat went through a massive redesign and that massively improves the experience of the original release. Tactics Ogre Reborn is another, a game that was already remade once with the PSP release, but Reborn takes the PSP game, drops it down, and completely overhauls the gameplay from top to bottom. The original game was great for its time but it has its issues and they are noticeable, the PSP version tries to resolve these issues and bring it up to modern day TRPG mechanics but the game is such an absurd grind and has worse issues than the oriignal that makes it unplayable imo. So Reborn takes an unplayable game with some good ideas, completely overhauls the games design and turns it into an absolute 10/10 masterpiece. That's deserving of GotY imo and the game is literally a remaster with a completely rework of its gameplay. It's so good that it is my second favorite game of all time.
At this point they could pretty much just say hey, I played this game that was in my backlog for 2 to 5 plus years. I finally got to play it now and wow it's amazing game of the Year Which is a load of nonsense
An expansion is by definition part of the original game, not a new game. Using this logic means the same game can win GoTY multiple years in a row…which doesn’t make sense. When a movie is re-released with an extra hour in a directors cut, it’s not then eligible for another Oscar.
Probably been said, but an easy solution to it is to add a "DLC of the year" category. I'm on the fence due to the time it takes to create the thing, but do think it should at least be it's own category so it doesn't take the chance away from a new game winning.
Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC was nominated and won RPG of the year in 2016. Monster Hunter World won RPG of the year TWICE. Once for its base game and then again for Iceborne. Any DLC has always been eligible to be nominated. Any DLC shouldn't have its nomination rescinded simply because it's a DLC.
I like the idea of having separate DLC category.... but if that doesn't exist yet I'm OK with erdtree being a GOY nominee. It's way better than most standalone games out there so they deserve the nomination.
My main problem is that the game awards lacks consistency. For example Marvel bs Capcom collection is a collection of old games and shouldn’t be nominated for fighting game of the year. The same goes for a DLC and Final Fantasy Rebirth. There were other games that should have been nominated like Warhammer and Stellar blade
The reality is this is down to Geoff Keighley and whoever else makes the rules, and their completely hands off approach. What happened here is the judges simply voted for SotE and it got more votes than other games and thats it. Keighley just said: well it is what it is 😂. As Louis Guiabern from Metaphor would probably say: if those other games didn't make it into the list, it simply shows they werent powerful enough
December is the worst month for big releases because they miss out on awards. Far Cry 3 didn't get the recognition it deserved because of its Dec release.
I understand the arguments for including them, and erdtree was my favorite experience this year. That being said....expansions and remakes/remasters don't belong. They deserve recognition, but that shouldn't be the spot. I've always thought they held the awards early to try to boost holiday sales for winners. Keighly can do whatever he wants though, and I won't complain, because I really don't care about his award show much
DLC is not a game but an expansion to a game (as Destin says). Until you can play it stand alone and it doesn't require the main game, then its a game. Doesn't matter to me anyway. I don't take Geoff's PlayStation awards as serious or even legitimate. I think most people don't. They watch the show for everything else.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a stand-alone Expansion (NOT a full game whatsoever) that doesn't require you to own any Uncharted game in order to play it. THAT also should NOT ever be nominated for Game of the Year.
Imagine if the DLC won.. What kinda idea does that send to small dev teams. That no matter how good your game is. A AAA only has to do half the work and they'll get nominated over you.
To be fair, Shadow of the Erdtree is at the level of being expansion for Elden Ring. It's not minor DLC or anything like that but I do agree that it should not be on the list for GOTY nor should Balatro. Some games, like Space Marine 2, got done dirty this year.
My biggest issue is the accessibility. I enjoyed Elden Ring, but I doubt I'll ever get to the point where I can access the DLC and that's the No. 1 reason I'm not even considering a purchase. That makes this a non-negotiable to me in GOTY conversation. While the overall field of candidates might be solid in its own right, I think this could be the result of a weak year for games. Side note: I enjoy sports games, and it's silly for College Football 25 not to be in that category. I plan to only watch Game Awards highlights via IGN. Haha.
I’m fine with remakes being the list. They’re standalone games and not dlc. - I think Keighley has the game awards in December to take advantage of the holiday season for sales. You’re more likely to buy a game of the year… But to your credit it would make sense to have the awards in January to allow for titles released in December to compete for game of the year awards.
I get that Erdtree is an insanely good dlc, like its longer than most games that won GOTY before. But for me, the wording of the “new rule” is so sketchy. It said “DLC, Expansions Packs, SEASONS” like I don’t trust this industry enough to keep to the point of “well IF it reaches this high quality” Like this feels ripe for the worst case scenario, where the future of gaming is just a bunch of live service titles, and GOTY goes to the newest Season of whatever Extraction Shooter is the hottest one.
I don’t watch the Game Awards for the Game of the Year anymore. I think the whole system is rigged. I watch it for new games that will be announced for next year and beyond.
Hellblade 2 is an Xbox game so no Goty list. This is unfortunately as simple as that. Not ONE exclusive Xbox Games in the goty list since 11 Game Awards. This isn’t an Xbox tax, this is a pure fraud. Game Awards = Pure trash marketing for PlayStation.
I’m a huge Elden Ring fan, and I agree with Shadow of the Erdtree should not be nominated. But I have no problem with FFVII, since the game changed so much from the original version, to me it’s basically a new game.
I’ve noodled on this and am coming down to DLC have its own category. I agree with you ref FF7-RB which is pretty big upgrade, and the whole turning a beloved game into a trilogy for PS4=>PS5=>PS6! Btw - glad to see you posting more, good work!!!
I think that DLC/expansions/big updates should not count towards GOTY. Also remasters/ports shouldn't count, but remakes are ok as they're more so built from the ground up, essentially making it a new game that's just modeled after a previous game.
It should not be game of the year material. Not because it’s not good but because we have agreed that the game of the year needs to be a game that came out that year not DLC belonging to a game that came out prior. Let’s assume that Nintendo launches DLC for one of their beloved Mario games of past years. Would we make that game of the year? No, we would say well this is for an older title. It deserves praise it deserves accolades but it’s not a game a complete game that came out this year . The problem is they don’t have an easy way to honor DLC that was this good. They don’t want to shove it into a category specifically for DLC, but it is not a complete game. You can’t play it by itself. You have to buy the other game finish the other game and then you can play it. That should let you know it’s game of the year. We’re gonna play this game that pun intended then should we also consider ultimate versions of a game that launch later after the initial launch date of a game potential candidates? Most of us know the answer to that is no. You get your shot one time not twice and it’s not fair. I know we want to bend the rules when we have something great come along, but you can’t even if you want to stick to the rules that we said we would stick to.
Does it really matter? The Game Awards aren't for us anyway. It's for those in the industry making the games. They're the ones who are going to use the awards for their professional development and appreciation of what they created.
10% vote limit from gamers makes it an unbiased award. Geoff Keighley involved makes it an unbiased award. Just get rid of him and let the gamers vote. If both of these aren't done, it's a waste of time.
I agree, DLCs should not be considered as game of the year. There should be a separate category for DLCs in the awards ceremony. I sort of think that console exclusives shouldn't be considered too. That would exclude AstroBot and Final Fantasy. I don't consider a game great if it's not accessible to all gaming platforms.
I totally agree about DLC/Expansion shouldn't be on GOTY because it requires you to owning the base game to access that content and its not a standalone game to do so. Regarding DLC. Here's what's happening here. They want DLC/Expansion to be considered a "standalone game" is because their next intention is to start jacking up the prices among all of DLC, which is far already expensive as it is when you factor into buying the base game. Game Publishers are hoping to start raising DLC prices and if Shadow of the Edrtree wins GOTY, marked my words, DLC is gonna skyrocket the prices

@@The_Last_Data_Hound brother put your tinfoil hat away
@@Morden97 oh sweet summer child, have you never wondered why they'd add a freaking DLC as GOTY? Just look at the GOTY nominees and consider what even comes close to being deserving of GOTY except BMW if there were no highly praised DLCs added to the list.
Mind you, games journalists (the 100 juries) were parroting a mistranslated lie that the dev of BMW was supposedly sexist or sth. You believe they'll just turn around and give GOTY to that game?
Remakes and DLC's should have their own category for awards and not GOTY.
Is the audio not synced?
Yeah im noticing that too
True!
I'm okay with remakes getting the GOTY award however dlcs and remasters don't deserve them.
DLC should have its own category. The fact it doesn’t is mind boggling.
That should be a no brainer 30$ for 30 hours of more content in a game seems worth it. 30$ for a skin is a scam.
totally agree, neither DLC nor Remakes should be nominated for GOTY, only in their own category.
Also they robbed Persona 3 Reload xD a masterfully crafted remake.
Elden Ring is the only game that could remotely compete with Black Myth Wukong. They didn't want Black Myth to win, so they had to just throw a DLC in there. So sad.
Expand it to 10 nominees
No DLC
No remakes unless they are substantial recreations mechanically
Name the nominating and voting committee member orgs
Increase fan vote to 25%
Completely agreed. I also really do not like the 90/10 split and multiple jurors involved this year.
My GOTY is Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. It is an amazing game, and quite a challenge. I cannot believe that Ubisoft discontinued.
2024 and game journalists still think the FF7 Remake is a remake play the game at least
Omg. Thomas’ tweet just shows how people need to overthink everything. I’m sorry but it’s very simple. A DLC should have its own category.
I think golden joystick awards does a better job of selecting the contenders and choosing the winner.
At this point they could pretty much just say hey, I played this game that was in my backlog for 2 to 5 plus years. I finally got to play it now and wow it's amazing game of the Year
Which is a load of nonsense
*Gaming was so bad this year, we have to consider dlc as a candidate for goty...that's where we're at now* 🌈
I like the idea of having separate DLC category.... but if that doesn't exist yet I'm OK with erdtree being a GOY nominee.
Keighly can do whatever he wants though, and I won't complain, because I really don't care about his award show much
You could argue sequels shouldn't get nominated as well.
DLC + REMASTERED = own category
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a stand-alone Expansion (NOT a full game whatsoever) that doesn't require you to own any Uncharted game in order to play it.
THAT also should NOT ever be nominated for Game of the Year.
Facts... no DLC's especially ones that Gate Keep from playing them should never be a DLC
Geoff wants to do it before Christmas as it boosts game sales
Imagine if the DLC won.. What kinda idea does that send to small dev teams. That no matter how good your game is. A AAA only has to do half the work and they'll get nominated over you.
It also shouldn't include remaster/remake. But here we are.
Haha.
Especially considering Elden Ring already won GOTY in 2022. Like, come on.
I love games, but games should not be contenders at the Ads of the Year Awards. 🧐
I read the title on my phone notification and I thought you meant that GOTY editions of games shouldn’t include their DLCs
I get that Erdtree is an insanely good dlc, like its longer than most games that won GOTY before. But for me, the wording of the “new rule” is so sketchy. It said “DLC, Expansions Packs, SEASONS” like I don’t trust this industry enough to keep to the point of “well IF it reaches this high quality”
Like this feels ripe for the worst case scenario, where the future of gaming is just a bunch of live service titles, and GOTY goes to the newest Season of whatever Extraction Shooter is the hottest one.
5:20 Holy shit, I put this comment before getting here, THE DUDE LITERALLY SAID IT, WE ARE DOOMED
I don’t watch the Game Awards for the Game of the Year anymore. I think the whole system is rigged. I watch it for new games that will be announced for next year and beyond.
The fact that Silent Hill and Hellblade are not on the game of the year list is a crime against the gaming industry.
No. No crime committed that I see
Silent Hill is a remake (rebuild) and while built from the ground up, it is functionally a high budget remaster.
Why would Hellblade be considered GOTY?
@ because this is a superb action-narrative game. The fact this game isn’t even in the artistic direction category is a pure provocation.
This is a huge mistake a lot of new games wont get a nomination now its such a shame it really is....
If that's so Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty deserved it too
I think that DLC/expansions/big updates should not count towards GOTY.
Refantazio better then FF7 Rebirth... no way, no way in hell... not even comparable... Rebirth is an art peice on every aspects...
10% vote limit from gamers makes it an unbiased award. Geoff Keighley involved makes it an unbiased award. Just get rid of him and let the gamers vote. If both of these aren't done, it's a waste of time.
That 10% viewer vote thing is utterly ridiculous.
You're usually wrong Destin, but today, you are very right
I agree, DLCs should not be considered as game of the year. There should be a separate category for DLCs in the awards ceremony. I sort of think that console exclusives shouldn't be considered too. That would exclude AstroBot and Final Fantasy. I don't consider a game great if it's not accessible to all gaming platforms.
Based Destin... articulating it better than most.
Who cares about Sony's game awards? They pat themselves on the back every year, truly an incredible achievement.
Ghost of Tsushima for PC should be nominated for GOTY
Elden Ring is one of my favorite games of all time.
But, no to GOTY.
Black Myth is my pick for sure.
So Destin, are you planning to back up Craig with his plans for his own Game Awards?
I agree...
...In the same way I agree 2006's game of the year was "Horse Armor".
Geoff is a corporate goblin. Passionate people should be involved in these events.
If a DLC is better than any other game then I don’t see the issue.
shadow of the erdtree has as much content as any other full game
A lot of people are playing GTA 5 this year, too. Shouldn’t that be nominated, too, then? 😂
