  • Come with me down to Willow Creek, Alaska for the day as we learn how to fly fish for salmon!
    This is a great place to learn, practice, just have fun catching fish all day long, or bring the kids so they can catch a salmon! The fishing at Willow Creek State Campground is very easy! This is at the confluence of Willow Creek and the Susitna River where THOUSANDS of salmon stack up waiting to push up the creek to their spawning grounds.
    In this video I walk you through how to get to the spot, what to use, and how to fish. Then, we do some good ol' salmon fishing, catching a bunch of pinks, a couple of chums, and even a silver!
    It was a blast! I hope you enjoy the video and learn something from it!

    Growing up my parents owned a small A frame cabin in Willow. We went there every single weekend and spent the majority of the summer out there. I basically grew up on this creek. I caught my first King out of the WIllow at ten years old. This place will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you!

    We're headed to AK next July for some self-guided salmon fishing. Thanks for sharing your fishing knowledge. It's super helpful for people like me who don't often fish for salmon. Closest thing we have to salmon in Montana are kokanees.

    I fished Willow creek on the 4th of July 1957 and it was loaded with Kings !!
    The only trouble was that I only had 30# line, and they kept breaking off !!

    Awesome video and thanks so much for sharing this spot with us! My wife and I plan on coming to Alaska this July to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary, do some fishing and see the beauty of Alaska. We will be staying in Willow for several day so what you shared will help us a lot. I would appreciate to know if you think I need studed soles like Korker for wading as I know I can't wear my felt soles? I appreciate your video and any input you can share. Thanks again and may God bless you!

    • @ckwoutdoors
      @ckwoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      July is a great time to be there, and happy early anniversary!
      I don't think you'll need studs. Not that Korker doesn't make a great wading boot, because they do, but it just isn't really necessary in this area. The Willow Creek confluence with the Susitna (where this video was filmed) especially, is mostly sand/silt and slipping isn't really an issue.
      Even in creeks/rivers throughout the state that are very rocky and super slick, I always use my Orvis boots with Vibram rubber studdless soles and they do great!

      @@ckwoutdoors Thanks so much for getting back to me and the info you provided. Here in Pennsylvania the rocks can be really slick so I wasn't sure about there in Alaska. That will be one more thing I don't need to bring them. Thanks again for all you help and the well wishes. Take care and may God bless you richly!

    Hey man, I was wondering what the camera on the tripod is that you were using. I am trying to start a fishing channel.

    • @ckwoutdoors
      @ckwoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! That camera is a DJI Osmo+. They are no longer made, but can be found used online. It is a 4k DJI camera (from their Inspire drones) with 10x optical Zoom, mounted on a self-stabilizing gimbal with a handle. Originally they were designed to be used and carried like a selfie stick, but because the camera and gimbal functions are controlled via the DJI app on a cell phone, you can mount the camera to a tripod and control it (zoom, direction, focus, start/stop recording, ect...) via a phone so they are AWESOME for self filming if you are out on your own, but desire that third-person view as if there was a cameraman with you! They made a few models. I like the Osmo+ because it has that optical zoom. The basic Osmo didn't have that feature, and was designed more for selfie view where as the plus was designed to be held like a selfie stick but filming out, rather than selfie.
      Additionally, they have lightning-fast auto focus as well as what they call "infinite focus" where everything in the frame is in focus all at once. This makes them great for filming and especially self filming as you don't have to worry about focus. They're great cameras! The only downfall is their built-in microphones suck, so get a cheap external mic to plug into their aux port and you're all set!

    why were there a bunch of dead salmon on the bank

    • @ckwoutdoors
      @ckwoutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oftwn times they are dead from natural causes and float down stream after spawning until coming to rest on a bank somewhere. It is pretty common, and I am guessing this is what was going on here. Sometimes it can be from anglers mishandling them and accidentally killing them by snagging or other things, and they'll just leave them there, which is wrong, but it unfortunately happens, especially at spots like this where there are so many people
