The Russian River in Alaska is a world famous river and it has a large run of sockeye (Red) Salmon.
The Russian River is a 13 mile long river on the Kenai peninsula that flows from Upper Russian Lake and into Lower Russian lake. Eventually it flows into the town of Cooper Landing Alaska and the upper Kenai river. This river has world class fishing for Sockeye Salmon fishing making it extremely popular. And because it is so popular it is basically a warzone and dubbed the name combat fishing.
In 2019 we had an extraordinary year where over 100K salmon came through the Russian River. Normally we see around 40K to 60K fish come through. There were so many fish that they raised the limit to 9 fish per day and 18 in possession. You can check out the triple the limit video to see how we did : • TRIPLE LIMIT INCREASE!...

Russian River Gear Requirements:
Fly Fishing only***
This doesn't mean a fly fishing rod just the Russian river fly lurer (It refers to the tackle that you have to use).
Regulations from ADFG- Russian River:
Only one unbaited, single hook, artificial lure or fly is allowed year-round. The gap between point and shank must be ⅜ inch or less.
The Russian River from an ADF&G marker located 100 yards upstream of its mouth to an ADF&G marker located 600 yards downstream of the falls:
May 1-June 10: Closed to all fishing.
June 11-August 20: Only artificial flies are allowed. Gear in Fly-Fishing-Only waters
One unweighted, single hook, unbaited fly with gap between point and shank of 3/8” or less is allowed. The fly must weigh less than ¼ oz. Artificial flies are defined on page 8 of the ADFG reg book
If weights are used, they must be at least 18” ahead of the fly.
Coho salmon: • July 1-September 30: Open to fishing for coho. • 1 per day, 1 in possession.
A coho salmon 16 inches or longer that is removed from the water must be retained and becomes part of the bag limit of the person who originally hooked the fish. You must not remove a coho salmon 16 inches or longer from the water before releasing it.
Sockeye salmon: • June 11-August 20: Open to fishing for sockeye. • 3 per day, 6 in possession. • Daily limits for other species are shown on page 59. • The Russian River Upstream from an ADF&G marker about 600 yards downstream of the falls: • Closed to all salmon fishing. • June 11-April 30: Open to fishing for species other than salmon. • • Daily limits for other species are shown on page 59

WEIGHTS
¼ ounce splitshot
I usually use 3-4 of them but will adjust weights depending on the flow of the river or the depth.
Deeper/faster water = more weight
Slower / shallow water = less weight
I want to feel my weight bounce off the bottom of the river and move at the same pace as the flow of the river.

From the fly - go up the line about three or four feet and that's where you will put the weights

The russian has a special place in my heart. When the crowds are thin, the reds will legit reaction bite. I've watched as a slug of fish came up from the sanctuary and holed up below me. Swung a skykomish sunrise in front of the school and watched as every 3rd or 4th fish would snap at it. Great video guys.

10 weight fly rod is a little heavy for Russian. 8 weight is perfect. Lighter rod makes the fight that much better. Combat fishing sucks every year their seems to be a heated argument over a fishing spot and it's not uncommon for a physical altercation. I've had guys walk right into my spot as soon as I landed a fish.
That's why I fish from about 330am only until 8am. If I catch my limit great if not it's not worth it. I'll just go back to the RV have some breakfast and enjoy the beauty of Alaska for the rest of the day.
Ive been to Kenai/Russian River last year. I was watching some videos to pick up more tips and info for my trip in a week. I can say that this is the best video ive watched so far. Great info. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome videos! I've been watching your videos over and over. I'm pretty new to fly fishing. I think I have a good understanding now on how to flip and floss now. Are you only stripping out about 4 to 5 feet of fly line before you flip your rod out? I guess it depends on how much space you have around you too. Hopefully I get a chance to run into you with the hundreds of people around. My father and I are flying into Anchorage on Thursday, June 10th for 2 weeks. Can't wait. Thank you for your videos! That’s great man hope it helps you during your trip! Limits in minutes!! The line length to pull out really depends on what hole you are fishing and what part of the river. Could be 5 to 30 feet, How ever much I need to reach in front of the fish. Then you flip, drift then strip, repeat. Hope that makes sense. You’re coming at a great time and fish should be running good by the third weekend in June. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Shu Jah Thanks and glad you enjoyed it. Yes you can you a casting setup but you will find when you are flipping that the line will get wrapped around the handle so just keep and eye on that.

To clarify for those from the lower 48…
“Flossing” is a freshwater snagging technique we use to protect our trout populations. In the salt water we just use a weighted treble hook but that is indiscriminate and would devastate our trout.
And why snag sockeye? Because sockeye are plankton eaters so they won’t “bite” any lure. The only way to catch a sockeye is to snag or net them.
What knot is good for salmon fishing? Always using uni knot and slipped most of the time.
I remember being told I had to floss the fly. Once I did that I started landing silvers. Found one loaded with tape worms. Had 3 different bears come close to us

Do you think neoprene waders will to hot in mid July, hiking 2-3 miles to rivers?
I heard you say at the end of July it would be good. I’ll be back in Alaska August 1st through the 10th if you are able to meet up for a day to do some film on the Russian river or some rivers somewhere let me know and Weel put a sweet vid together! Would be cool to fish the Russian since I never fished it yet!

kind of late to the party on this..but as a long time sockeye fisherman on the kenai..a tip for waders...if you are using hip waders...do not strap them to your pants...cut the straps off and forget they ever existed...should you fall in a current they can and will fill up and or start dragging you with the current and if there strapped on you may not be able to get them unstrapped and can get dragged away in a swift current..i have saved 7 people in the last 30 years..because they were strapped up and slipped and the current got them and actualy saw one person parish just down from the russian ferry crossing at a place called lovers rock..he stepped out to far after i repeatedly warned him about that and he stepped off a drop and was instantly sucked away and i was unable to help as the current in that bend of the river is very swift..all i could do was notify fish and game at the ferry crossing...so be careful people..neoprene's may cost more but there worth it especially if you should fall in ..air actually trap in them and give you a bit more buoyancy...so be careful people and get out there fishing.....be well

Hey man I know this might be a bit late but I’m going to purchase a 8 wt rod for the russian but im still not sure for the line, idk if people use sinking line or floating line with a sinking tip, any tips would be awesome and by the way its the best vid I’ve seen for fishing coho, keep it up.
Hey Miguel, I like to use sinking line or at least semi sink line. Then I use a Fluorocarbon leader that is about the same length as your rod. You will get less drag in the water using sinking line and will be able to feel the bottom and fish better. Good luck out there!

No regulation on the rod or reel, just on the fly/lure. There is bank fishing opportunities but most of the time be wading in knee to thigh water.

Does your hook/line get caught up on the rocks? I was there yesterday and I would have to walk over and tug it out. It’s annoying.

Will this work with a regular spinning rod? I have a fly rod but it might be too light.
Definitely! I started using a spinning rod and a bait caster. Fly rods are easier to flip and the fly line glides better through the rod but if you don’t have an 8wt or 9wt fly rod and reel a spinning rod will work fine.
I just want to add to the bear comment.
For those that are not used to seeing bears and have the very wrong idea of throwing rocks at the bear.
Not only is it illegal to throw rocks at the bear it will cause the bear to try and figure out where the rocks are coming from.
And if you are stupid enough to actually hit the bear with the rock, it will not run away. The bear will get upset and chase you down for hitting it with a rock.
I mention it as I have seen plenty of people throwing rocks at a bear.
Leave the bear alone, and 99 percent of the time the bear will leave you alone.
Dont play with the bears and dont feed them unless they come after you for your fish, then you must feed them or they will eat you and after you feed, tippy toe tippy toe

I like to use a longer leader down on the lower river usually 6 foot or so and definitely more weight down there.
