Many, many years ago some looney lefty students on my PGCE course, together with one of their lecturers, tried to prevent the university awarding me my PGCE. They didn't like the thought of someone with right-wing views teaching students. That's fine for a rich driver who doesn't need to sell his services to prospective passengers. A university however does need to sell itself and having a low/high number of infractions will affect desirability.

What people forget is that, NOBODY has a right not to be offended. I am a member of the free speech union and we absolutely have to defend free speech, without it there is no debate and we end up going backwards. Debate and the exchange of ideas is how we progress.
My partner is currently reading poetry at university. Even as the most lovely, accepting and liberal-minded person I've ever met it seems like every day is a struggle to not get cancelled. If she writes about the female body she's accused of being trans-exclusionary, if she writes about being in a mixed-race relationship she's accused of "fetishising" other races. But it gets worse, she's currently fighting for her career because she read at an event at which SOMEONE ELSE was cancelled.
