  • How does an RC car work? What bit is the ESC, and what is the receiver?
    In this video, Aaron explains what every component in an RC car does, and how they do it - with help from Blitzy, the Blitzer Beetle.

    Finally someone explaining RC stuff without all the condescending gate keeping attitude. I’m trying to learn RC planes and let’s just say it’s pretty difficult to ask questions and get straight, informative answers in that community.
    I’ve learned enough to realize the tech is the same as RC cars. Just more channels and servos.
    Thanks again!

    Hi Aaron, thank you for taking the time to make this video, I’m learning every day. My question is a little outside your video subject but I’m an electronics idiot but I’m not a dumb guy, so I’m hoping to tap your expert opinion for some advice.
    I’m trying to pull the rope on a lifejacket CO2 manual inflator (No, using the auto inflator is not an option) using either a servo or a solenoid with a button as the trigger on off. So, I’ve guessed the torque pull required on the rope is probably 3 to 5kg and this is a one-time use one time pull device I’m trying to build. I don’t even know if that is even possible to press a button once and get enough torque from a servo or solenoid to pull a rope? Would the servo keep spinning or would it stop after the button is released? Any advice or suggestions would be most greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

    Great video mate, teaching an old dog new tricks. I bought an HSP Savagery truck and haven`t turned a wheel yet but while familiarising myself with this fabulous little truck I noticed the rear (non steer) wheels toe in a few degrees (noticable to the naked eye) and there appears to be no way to adjust this toe in. Is there a technical reason for the rear wheels pointing inwards instead of them being parallel to each other. The only adjustment I can see is camber/castor. Thanks in advance and will now subscribe to this channel. Cheers mate

    • @HobbiesDirect
      @HobbiesDirect  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Demolishor17 In short, the C rating is the maximum continuous current output that the battery can maintain. A 5000mAh (5Ah) with a 20C discharge rating has a theoretical output of 100 amps (5x20=100). Go as high as budget allows, but remember a lot of companies have a higher number than true for marketing purposes, so it's best to go with a reputable brand - with LiPo, you get what you pay for.

    I had to thumb up the video after that first joke. Good video too. I have some broken RC cars my boss asked me to repair. Since I'm an FPV quadcopter pilot, he assumes I know all about RC everything. I'm trying to learn what ESC, motor, sensored vs non sensored works with what application. I was never into RC cars until I drove one of his that I put back together. They are a lot of fun. I have rear end gear boxes disassembled, motors with what feels like bad bearings, an ESC that draws enough amps when a motor is plugged into it that it trips the overvolt protection on my power supply. However the motor runs just fine when plugged into the car that I got running. 4 of the same cars so everything is interchangeable. RC cars is another rabbit hole I'm diving into.

      Depends on if the receiver has a built in gyro or not, and if the esc is compatible. A separate gyro will go in between the receiver and servo/esc, intercepting the signal before passing it on.

    Curious. If I wanted to run power tool batteries, Is there a step down I need for the extra voltage? Or does this automatically step down?
    I’m new to this. I don’t use 12v tools so I have concern for the extra voltage. I’d likely use nominal 18v batteries.
    I’m just considering something for my nephew that runs off of tool batteries.

    • @HobbiesDirect
      @HobbiesDirect  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'd need a speed controller capable of running that voltage. 18v (5S) isn't very common in the rc world, so you'd need a 22.2v (6S) capable ESC. These are usually quite expensive and are associated with high-power large scale cars that usually do upwards of 50mph. If you want to use drill batteries, I think there are some cheaper toy-grade cars out there.

    Does servo makes your rc car faster?

  • @glowpipe

    So here I am sitting, considering using my 3d printer to make a rc dumper truck from scratch. I have no idea about anything RC related and im a tiny bit above avarage in cad drawing and designing stuff to print. so this can be fun! (we all know im gonna fail misserably)
    All i think i know, after watching this, is that i need a battery, an esc, motor to drive the wheels and 2 servos. one for steering and one for tipping the dumper. Then i guess i also need a 4 channel reciever and controller to boot? 2 channels for the servos and one for the esc/motor. But what If i want lights aswell? A light module that get put in another channel?

    • @HobbiesDirect
      @HobbiesDirect  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep! RC led kits usually just get run off a spare channel in the receiver. Good luck with your project :-)

      Vintage crystal-based radios can be temperamental things! Your best best would be to take it to someone with experience in vintage radios, or update it to a modern 2.4GHz system.

    is there such a thing as a ready to install kind of set up? rather than having to buy all the parts separately, is there some kind of electronics kit that just has everything in it ready to be set up and installed?

      There's this:
      hobbiesdirect.com.au/Kyosho-Electronics-set-with-2.4Ghz-3ch-Transmitter-Receiver-ESC-and-Servo-82145
      But as there are so many combinations or setups and not all components are compatible or suitable for all vehicles, electronics kits are rare.

      Maybe hit up some electronics forums? Control wise, you'd likely need two ESCs - one for each side of the chassis, and a radio system that can do tank-steer.

    I have an issue when my speed is turned up between maybe 90-100%, the car wants to reverse under light throttle. The same is true for steering. If I just barely turn right, the car will register it as turning left.
    Any idea wth is going on? My kids are tired of racing the neighbors' Traxxas Stampede at 80% speed 😢😆
    The car is the Bezgar HB121 buggy. The radio is just about the simplest trigger and wheel style with steering trim, speed trim, aux and reverse steering options.
    Thanks for any info!

    • @HobbiesDirect
      @HobbiesDirect  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not familiar with that brand or the radio that comes with it, but I'd guess the radio itself is causing the issue. Blast out both potentiometers with contact cleaner, and see if that helps :-) If not, it might just be a case of cheap electronics.

    Hello, I have a RC car with a crystal 5 (RX) 26.740. The controller is missing. What controller can I buy, those programmable ones that I can use with this car? The car brand is Nikko, probably a 10 year old car, but I don't want the OEM controller, I would like to buy a better quality one.

    • @HobbiesDirect
      @HobbiesDirect  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You'd very likely have to change the receiver as well; it's virtually impossible to get old rx crystals, especially ones that will work with a oem car. If the car has a combination esc/rec (likely), you'd have to swap in a new esc as well.
