Big lathes are great. Turn on a lathe before you buy a particular one as not everyone likes the same lathe.

Insane! Love this project, but nerve wracking to watch. Eyesight! I use diopter safety glasses. But even with that I struggle with super closeup work. That said, I'll have to give this a go along with an off center twig vase. Great teaching!
Thank you. For me this is detailed but does not require any special eyesight on my part. I have had cataract surgery on both eyes and wear progressive lenses , required for reading but I wear all the time because they also correct for some double vision.

Super thin finials Mike, a true measure of master Lathes-man I think. Intimidating but will try on green. I've used crepe myrtle for finial practice in the past as its easy to turn.... Thanks!

with the most respectful compliments because I consider you and admire your work,... however, allow me to say this,... about the pressure of the counterpoint with wood, in this case, a flower,... as the thickness of the stem starts to get smaller, it is not able to rotate the counterpoint, due to its weight,... a tiny bearing serves the same purpose, supporting the wood but without causing damage or forces,... just put a small bearing on the end of the counterpoint and it will rotate,... it's just a trick that helps a lot,... stay well and healthy, all the best

Well done, Mike! I've made 5" finials for sea urchin ornaments (Cinyd Drozda has a very good TH-cam video on these), and have created a 3" thin section that was about 1 mm in diameter. I've always used a dense, closed grain wood like Jatoba or Canary wood, that was dry. I've not tried this with green wood, but will have a go at making a few of these flowers. I used a 3/8" bowl or spindle gouge for this kind of work, and always use a Japanese hand saw to part the piece.

@@MikePeaceWoodturning Thanks, what is the diameter of the hole? The stems would need to be really narrow to get any more than 3 inside.

I love doing flowers. A few times that darn pith has curled through the stem and ka blooey the thing blows apart. Its frustrating after spending serious time getting the flower just right. I do bigger ones like Yamabiko does.
So even though the pith was kept off center on each end it crossed somewhere in the Middle? Bummer!
@@MikePeaceWoodturning yup. I've seen the pith actually curl around the stem. I have one flower that the stem warped really cool because of that. The pit is on the edge of the stem and goes around it.

...very cool...looks like an exercise in finessness (not a word?...well, it should be...).
Why not take a Dremel carefully to the split, round it off and make it look like the petal is parted? In fact, several would make it look like a true petal...
I might try that if it happens again! But that might be trickier than turning another one. These do not take that long to turn.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning ...well, your split gave me an idea of creating petal molds for resin and gluing them to the top of the stems...I'll need to look into that...by the way, love the weed pots, especially the off-center ones...
