Thank you Ken. As to which lathe, that can be a big decision. Lathes can get expensive, I suggest to start small and try to get one that the motor is either under or behind the head stock. Not on the side because whatever types of pieces you start turning, the side mount motor can get in the way. BTW, turn at the slowest speed possible. take care,
HI Jim, I have not turned in about 50 years. I did with my Grandfather in the late 60's, but I want to. I have been looking for a good lathe, that I can afford. As you know you have to buy more items to be able to turn, not just a lathe.
Jim if you used skew on the outside you would have gotten rid of all that rough tear outs. Also, I found it very useful and great result when you add a50/50 ratio of lacquer and dilute it with 50% lacquer thinner for those spalted wood. As a matter of facts I di dhwloe bunch of them last night on Spalted Pecan which has gorgeous wild pattern tand today I used the skew and got a very slick finish right form the tool and I can easly say that I can start from 180 grit to 400. You said you went to 800 grit which is too much and when you get the wood that slick then you'd have problem with the finish soaking in. at most 400 grit gets it clen enough that you can apply final finish on it. When using above concoction it stiffens up the torn fibers like you see in your video so when you come back and tool it it will slide like a nice wood.
Very nice I don’t use Spear centers I use a cup center so if I get a catch the piece will slip and I like to make them in miniature for Christmas ornaments
@@ballardjim something that includes deep hollowing, without the use of a stabiliser? Particularly advice on how to avoid catches; how to best scrape (and avoid even more catches, and how best to finish internally. I think I might have just about managed some hollowing whilst avoiding catches with a hollowing tool only to find a propensity to catch when using a scraper. It's a bit difficult to see/film I guess but an open deep vase might do the trick. Cheers, Ray

you should never hit a Morse Taper with a hammer , it could shatter or round-over the MT , then it wouldn't fit the head stock,, surly you could make a mallet on the lathe
Nice, so you are using your bowl gouge just like a spindle gouge, they are about the same thing aside from the depth of the flute. I do like your no BS approach to things
Nova works great. Be advised that you need to know what your lathe's TPI is on the head stock. If the chuck you find and like does not have equal threads, you will need to also have an adapter to mate with both the chuck and your head stock TPI.

That looks like a Nova chuck similar to what I have, curious though, what's that on the claws? Looks like duct tape.
Silver duct tape. When I turn something wet using the expansion function it keeps the jaws from transferring rust to the wood.

@@T67Moon try to use a saw as well on an X to give the drive center some grab in a groove. That was how I learned until I took to beating it in.
