Great video Jim. I enjoyed that there wasn't a lot of explaining and needless chatter during the video, yet it was clear what you were doing. Good music too! I appreciate it.
I located some 3x3x30 nice and dry oak and thought twig pots would be a perfect project for it. A YT search brought up this video. Good job and your centering spacer earned you a new subscriber! Looking forward to seeing your other videos.
Nice video. I love making bud vases. All I need is a chunk of wood either scraps or a piece of a branch. So much latitude for artistic expression. I just grab my chisels and play.
I enjoyed the vase. These are my favorite things to turn. Yes I’m a beginner, but thanks to the efforts of guys like you making TH-cams, I’m learning fast. Thank you Best music on a TH-cam I’ve heard.
Great vid Jim, couple of good tips as well with securing the blank with the chuck centres, and the spacer on the tool rest. Some nice pieces there Jim. Good turning. From Al, in Yorkshire, across the big pond.
HI Jim, I have not turned in about 50 years. I did with my Grandfather in the late 60's, but I want to. I have been looking for a good lathe, that I can afford. As you know you have to buy more items to be able to turn, not just a lathe.
Great looking vases. The wood spacer for the tool rest is a great idea. I am sorry I did not think of it. It should make the adjustment a breeze from here on.!
Good job Jim! I like the shape and the finish is perfect!! I love you guys have so much variety of finishes and other turning gear. Someday I'll make my way back to the US and I'll have a field day ;) Yuval.
Very nice I don’t use Spear centers I use a cup center so if I get a catch the piece will slip and I like to make them in miniature for Christmas ornaments
Great looking piece Jim, I subscribed and am watching many of your videos. Im trying to learn as much as possible and try to decide what lathe to buy. I had to comment on this one it was so beautiful and seemed pretty simple.
Thank you Ken. As to which lathe, that can be a big decision. Lathes can get expensive, I suggest to start small and try to get one that the motor is either under or behind the head stock. Not on the side because whatever types of pieces you start turning, the side mount motor can get in the way. BTW, turn at the slowest speed possible. take care,
Jim if you used skew on the outside you would have gotten rid of all that rough tear outs. Also, I found it very useful and great result when you add a50/50 ratio of lacquer and dilute it with 50% lacquer thinner for those spalted wood. As a matter of facts I di dhwloe bunch of them last night on Spalted Pecan which has gorgeous wild pattern tand today I used the skew and got a very slick finish right form the tool and I can easly say that I can start from 180 grit to 400. You said you went to 800 grit which is too much and when you get the wood that slick then you'd have problem with the finish soaking in. at most 400 grit gets it clen enough that you can apply final finish on it. When using above concoction it stiffens up the torn fibers like you see in your video so when you come back and tool it it will slide like a nice wood.
Would you care to tell me what brand your 2 inch sanding pad attachment you use and where to find it? Enjoyed the video. I'm in East Tennessee. Good to meet a fellow Volunteer. Just getting started turning myself. Still picking up little odds and ends to make life easier.

@@ballardjim good to know, may come in handy. I've only been turning about a week now, and just found your channel. I have to say the way you applied the tooth point thing, not sure what it's called, to turn between centers was interesting as mine dont stay in the wood.
Nice, so you are using your bowl gouge just like a spindle gouge, they are about the same thing aside from the depth of the flute. I do like your no BS approach to things
you should never hit a Morse Taper with a hammer , it could shatter or round-over the MT , then it wouldn't fit the head stock,, surly you could make a mallet on the lathe
Nova works great. Be advised that you need to know what your lathe's TPI is on the head stock. If the chuck you find and like does not have equal threads, you will need to also have an adapter to mate with both the chuck and your head stock TPI.

That looks like a Nova chuck similar to what I have, curious though, what's that on the claws? Looks like duct tape.
Silver duct tape. When I turn something wet using the expansion function it keeps the jaws from transferring rust to the wood.
