Oh man! I’m glad I decided to watch your older videos! I have a 788 in a .243 that I want to build, but I just can’t do it because the factory barrel on it will shoot 1/4” groups all day with factory rem core lokts. I feel like no matter how much “upgrades” I want to do to it, it won’t be an upgrade at all. Awesome video and I’ve learned so much from you and your channel! Keep the videos coming!
This video has a lot of the interesting facets of reloading that make it fun and draw people in, and would be good to show beginners for how much changing components can affect things for the better are worse. I love it!
.22-250 works very well with H380/IMR4064/IMR4895. H380 got it's name, when Bruce Hodgdon was testing a new powder. In a .22-250, at 38.0 grains ....it was shooting one hole groups at their test range............So the new powder was named H380. ( from the Hodgdon loading manual number 26 page 11 )
Donald... I handload 9 different calibers.. my 22_250 model 788. Probably hands down my favorite... It took 100 s of experimental loads.. different powders n tips of different grains to achieve what i was looking for... I found two opposite loads that fly on top of each other @ 200 yds with no scope adjustment... I kid u not!!!! A 50 gr Winchester ballistic silvertip with 38 grs of H 380... And a 55 gr Hornady v max with 35.5 grs of IMR4895..... Dime groups at 200 yrds... We have competition shooting matches here in North Carolina... I'm barred from using the 22_250.... No one can beat it.....😁🇱🇷🇱🇷
I had a Kimber 84M Varmint in a 22-250 and IMR4320, a powder I'd previously had exceptional experience with and this particular one was no exception. IMR4320 with a 55 grain Sierra Blitzking, I could cover all of my 8 shots up with a dime.
I love the .22-250. I have 4 of them 1 in 1:14 twist 2 in 1:10 twist, and a new one that I've not fired yet 1:8 twist. Thanks for the .22-250 series

Merry Christmas from Australia 🇦🇺. Finally one that I can comment on. I have a Ruger M77 Mk1 in 22-250 which has a 1:14 twist. I have loads that use 55gr projectiles from Nosler (orange ballistic tip), and Berger VLD, both of which group exceptionally well at 100m. I have also achieved sub MOA groups using the Sierra 63gr semi-point projectiles. All of my loads use ADI 2208 (which I understand to be your Varget), in Norma or Lapua brass and FedGM210 primers. I’ve got a 1:14 22-250 that shoots 55gr well at 100 yards but after 100 yds they lose stability and the groups open up to 3-4inches. I understand that to be a stability problem bc if you run the numbers thro a bullet twist app then they show as being marginal. I also have a 338 with the same trouble with the heavier bullets.

Rem. 788 one of the best rifles Remington ever made even with the factory barrel.
My 223 788 had the bolt fall off ! Shooting factory loads.
The 788 22-250 I was shooting back in college (new in box, had been stored in the back of an old lady's closet because her husband got pissed at her for buying it 15 years earlier as it couldn't be used for deer hunting in that state) put 5 rounds of factory moly coated ammo (been too long to remember exact details) consistently into ragged holes at 100 yards (outdoor range but wind protected). Once I found that moly ammo, I bought one box every week (it was all I could afford to shoot in college), took it to the range, and drilled holes into the center of 1" pasters.
I had no idea at that time that it would, 22 years later, be the single most repeatably accurate rifle I have ever shot, period, even after I got into shooting and began handloading years later. I don't want to get into why I don't have it and I am still bitter.

Thank you for this video, I am very grateful to you for the diverse amount of information that you managed to pack into it and I am very glad that I sat though it twice to make very sure that I absorbed all of its finer details, you solved my Hornady 53grn projectile (missing load information) questions and eventual problems in one go and that is very valuable to me.

If youre watching and havent ever shot a 22-250, you should. Its one of the most fun cartridges to shoot. Big crack, low recoil, high power.
It's my go to Woodchuck slayer.
Is it a barrel killer? Lots of powder smoking down a small hole.
@@bmstylee They are known to be. I've heard figures as low as 1200 rounds. Even then, that's just accuracy degrading a bit. I feel like my Savage 110 has already paid for itself at 500 rounds or so, and it is still going strong. That's an easy sub half minute rifle. I'll take 1200 accurate shots over 5000 mediocre ones.
@@bmstylee Barrels are cheap and performance is priceless. I refuse to join the "omg barrel burner" crowd! Life's too short to worry about barrel life. :)

I had a .22-250 back in the 80's. 700 Remington BDL with a Weaver scope. I used IMR 3031, Sierra 52 grain BTHP, I think 32 or 38 grains of powder, and it would shoot hole for hole. Try the 3031.

Wow, blast from the past. Shot woodchucks with my 22-250 in the 70s. Great gun. Favorite load was 4895 at 3800 to 3900 fps using Sierra or Hornady 53 GR HP. Very accurate and 300 yard hit is explosive!

You will love your auto bench prime . Just be sure you hold the case level and you'll have no problem. I have primed 500pcs of .223 in just over a hour. Although the video was a bit long you have a lot of information to work with. Keep up the good work.👍

Enjoy your videos greatly! I used to shoot a 22-250Ackley improved, that Nelson Berger built for me. It was a heavy contour Douglas barrel with a 14" twist. It shot one hole groups with 55gr nosler ballistic tips and IMR 3031 powder. It shot good groups with the same powder/bullet combination as a standard 22-250, but I had to push the envelope on pressure and velocity a bit too high in order to get good accuracy, hence the switch to Ackley improved.
Watching the video for the 2nd time now because I finally got some stuff in to reload for 22-250 can't wait until you make the next video on this!!! If you're going to buy a 22-250 you might want to look at the Ruger M77 Hawkeye that thing is a sweet shooting rifle. I just bought one so I can retire my custom 22-250 I inherited from my grandfather. It was a gorgeous rifle with a high polished blued barrel and wood stock that I didn't like taking it out in the woods or rain because I didn't want to mess it up.
I have that bench mounted priming tool for 2 years so far and I like it.
Had a Rem 700 22-250 and I believe it was 1 in 14 twist.
First things first. Amazing video. You really put in the effort to be thorough. This is my first video of your channel and I just got a Marlin 22-250 and was curious about loading my own brass and when I watched this video.... Well I think I might just not do that.. this was a lot to think about. But if I am then I will definitely be watching this multiple time for this stuff to stick in my head. Keep it up!

one thing I wish barrel makers would do is put cal, and barrel twist on the barrel.
You may find it in odd spots. Some are marked on the chamber end face (may be lost when chambered) or may have ended up facing the barrel channel in the stock. As for chambering so many don't have that when they leave the barrel makers and are done by a gunsmith. It would be up to them to mark it. Caliber is kind of incidental once chambered but that info as well as Twist could/should be marked once chambering is chosen.

@@paulvenn4447 Criterion Barrels roll Mark their pre-fit barrels with the chamber and twist rate so it shows on any rifle. Shilen marks their barrels on the breech end. You can't see it once it is installed.
One thing I wish all companies would do: have an idea submission area and ACTUALLY take advice from their customers. Shocking the concept but I think it’d only help them. The ceo should not be making the technical decisions but they do.

I just saw a ad for a new federal bullet. It is called terminal ascent it is in .264 and .308 and a few others. Maybe a new 6.5 Creedmoor candidate. Thanks for the awesome videos. You have made me want to start reloading.
Hey Johnny I reload for 22-250 A LOT and have learned with a 1-12 or 1-14 twist barrel the flat base bullets always perform much better than boat tails.
I have seen the same with my Remington 700 in 22-250. Mine likes 53 grain Nosler Varmageddon bullets.
This is 100% correct. I experienced the same with my factory Savage 1:12 twist barrel.
Found exactly the same out of my 1:14 Tikka. When I rebarrel, I'm thinking of using 1:10. Got about 500-600 rounds life
JD Kirane my savage likes those bullets also. What powder, how many grains, and what OAL gives you your best groups if you don’t mind sharing ? My only complaint with those bullets is trying to get them to start in the case got any suggestions for that ?

Spitzer round from sierra I think is the last I used that went straight.
Boat tails floundered in the air and would land sideways and whatnot.
I was like...whuuut😵
Then I read somewhere 🤔🤷 that boattails need higher pressure to fly straight.
I might try them again and go max load or something.

About 45 years ago, I had a friend that bought a new Sako in .22-250. It was a beautiful gun that he paid about $500 for-a substantial sum at the time. The rifle shot very, very well, especially with his hand loads. He had it about two months and the longer he admired the finish, he decided that he didn't want to put such a beautiful rifle in the back of his old IH Scout. He went to a local discount store and bought one of theses 788's for $90. Lo and behold, the cheap'o Remington shot better than the Sako. Having no need for two of the same caliber, he sold the Sako.

If you measure the headspace on the modified case and then measure the same on your fireformed piece of brass, you can see the difference and then use that to adjust your actual CBTO to work with your fireformed brass. Yes, modifying an actual case can be done, but it isn’t necessary as long as you have a piece that’s fireformed to your chamber.

Edit: use the Sinclair primer seating tool! Yes, the lazy in me wants one that holds the primers to help speed up reloading, but the OCD in me wants the quality and ease of seating and the feel you have with it!
Edit 2: my 10th edition of the Hornady manual, both the digital and the printed copy have data for the 53gr v-max in the 22-250 Remington. No data for 6.5Staball powder obviously, but it does for pretty much every other powder.
Very good point about comparing the headspace between your generic modified case and a fired case. I'll be sure to mention that in the next video.
I have NO IDEA how the hell I missed the 53gr Vmax in the manuals. I'll be sure to let everybody know in the next video. It's right there in my 10th edition and on the app. I seriously have no idea how I screwed that up. I tend to think of this bullet as "heavier", so I must have been looking for 63gr instead of 53gr, or something stupid like that.
I'm intrigued to see that they show an OAL of 2.350" in the manual. That ogive was definitely below the case mouth at that OAL. Interesting.
The magnito is making larger groups. It is loose and changes the harmonics. The last target improved with the magnito off the end of the barrel.
I was thinking the same thing, I wouldn’t want that hanging on the end of the barrel.😮
All in all, a very nice video. Good info on the whole process. All handloaders have problems. I always lube the inside of the neck with powdered graphite on a Q-tip before sizing. I've had bad luck with Winchester brass. One bag had 50 pieces (half the bag) where the new cases would not fit in the chambers of two of my rifles. I full-length resized three of them, and they STILL wouldn't fit! Can't say I understand that, but there it is. Sent them back, they gave me a new bag. Overly tight primer pockets make my head ache when I'm loading. You should consider either cleaning between groups so that each load has the same amount of 'dirtiness' or shoot the groups together, switching targets between each shot. The jury may be out on whether or not hanging that velocity meter on the barrel is a good idea.
Your video quality is just like your reloads. You have a lot of work ahead of you.
Still in the process of getting reloading bench set up. But when I do, I'll be doing 22-250 for a Remington 788 myself. Love the rifles.

I like hand priming tools also and then I ran into the same issue as you did with the Norma tight primer pockets. So I got one of the Lee bench-mount priming tools. Way more muscle to deal with tight pockets.

You need some H-380 in there, not too temperature stable, but still continues to give me my best groups. Thanks for the video I have been one of the folks looking forward to this caliber.
OMG, a movie length video! I made it through, but I did fast forward through the loading portion a bit. I was happy to see you loading for the .22-250, but somewhat disappointed you have to go with the lighter bullets, because of the slow twist. Mine is a 1:12 twist and I’ve shot the 60 grain bullets without any issues. I really like the 50 to 55 grain bullets. Not much of a fan of the less than 50 grain bullets as they drift too much in the wind. Looking forward to the rest of the videos in this series. Keep up the good work!
It is interesting reading the large number of comments from people who seem to like the 22.250. Well as a professional shooter here in Australia, I have tried the 22.250 and although it was a nice little gun, and basically accurate to a point, I found that when I changed the case to Ackley improved, my accuracy improved dramatically. In fact after using this rifle for some time I changed all my rifles to be Ackley Improved. Aside from the Remington in 22. 250, I use .243 improved and 30.06 case with a 6 millimetre bullet. Each and every one of these rifles shoot really well. I don’t have the loading specs at present.
Your Grandaddy was a smart man I can tell by his Arsenal.

The 22-250 Remington is an excellent cartridge but nobody has given enough time an attention to make something good , but seems like the godfather of reloading has the ability to take the best of it, really hope the next new load will be the iconic 30-06 that is almost forgotten because of new arrival on the radar! @@danietkissenle it's not but 100+ years of technical advancements have made it less desirable. Not really used outside of the Garand and hunting rifles.
@@bmstylee what technological advancements exactly do you speak of? Just because it's old doesn't make it out of date
@@danietkissenle bullet advances and in all fairness a 6.5 can do just about anything the 06 can with less recoil. Same with the 1911. It's an antique and obsolete design that people hold onto for whatever reason. If I am taking a 30 Cal round it's a 300 win mag. Significantly more power and marginally more recoil. Only downside is the belt.
37.4g of 2000MR pushing a 60TMK is amazing. Supersonic to 1k. I took my longest kill on a groundhog at 318y with this load. Also went 2 for 3 at 700y 1st time out. 53g Vmax with 38.8g of RL16 pushes 3600fps and is a great hunting load. This all came out of a Savage Axis 1/12. Good luck!

I had a Rem 788 in 22-250 and I loved it. I could download it so the kids could shoot targets and up the load to a 70gr semi-spitzer for whitetail deer. I traded it when I moved to Colorado because caliber requirements for big game were a bit different. Wish I had kept it for coyotes.
Awsome video watch allway to the end . Wait for more on this 22.250 work up. Live in pa are loss for deer is 6mm here no 22cal for deer. I've herd guys say 22 hornet and 22 k- hornet is both awesome deer calibers.

the best brass I ever reloaded 22-250 with was Hornady. over many years I shot the brass till when fired the ejected brass the primers would fall out . I shot many brands of brass but Hornady brass always serves me best. Nana and papa the hunter wishing you well
