The Herriot Way | Yorkshire Dales | Day Two | Askrigg to Thwaite

The Herriot Way is a 52-mile long distance path that takes in the very best of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
It was inspired by the famous vet and author Alf Wright, better known by his pseudonym of James Herriot, and visits many places associated with him. The walk is designed to be completed in four stages but we took an extra half day to allow for travel time.
It's a circular route so it can be started from any point - we chose to start from the Aysgarth Falls car park as a car can be left there for a week.
There's plenty of accommodation along the way, including campsites, bed and breakfasts and even Youth Hostels, so you can break it up how you choose - or walk it a bit at a time.
Although the Herriot Way isn't signed, it follows well-used rights of way and is easy to follow. Our second day was the longest, clocking up 19 miles. A meander through fields and meadows brought us to Hawes, England's highest market town, where we had lunch before facing the long, long climb up Great Shunner Fell, the third highest peak in the Dales.
We descended to the hamlet of Thwaite and pitched up at Usha Gap campsite - ushagap.co.uk/
