Bought one today identical to this one that's in really good shape , no rust , deck is pristine as is most of the rest of it . Cut my lawn which is fairly good size with no problems at all , 16 hp. Kohler is strong and tractor pulls really well for a smaller unit. At any rate I paid $400 for it and very pleased so far. Seems like a very good mower
I have a 2004 craftsman L-T 1000 , payed $900.00 new! Keeping the oil from getting super black is a must for any mower, your going to have some problems after a few years but they can be small one’s if you take good maintenance care of it!
All the new mowers like his and mine craftsmen and John deere have the same engines and husqvarna does to I bought a used grey one and it had way to much oil in it I was mowing with it on the side of a hill and it blew tons of burnt oil smoke out so i drained some of the oil out and just let it burn off the rest that it didn't need it does have a slight knock while running but before i fix that tiny problem i need to fix my other mower first and that one last
I bought a '98 917 for $100. Needed lots of work, but it did run okay. Then it didn't. Cleaned the starter switch, the PTO switch, all 4 tires would not hold air, the mower deck had to be completely rebuilt, fuel lines were leaking, and on and on. Now it runs and mows like a champ. Yes I agree, great lawn mower, I have a LTX 1000 and Lt1500 by craftsman For about 9 yrs, inly had to buy a 2 battery and 6 belts ( Trying to cut Lawn that was to thick, the grass that was 3 ft tall) but it’s still my old faithful!
I'm now optimistic. Mine will run for a few seconds, if you put a little fuel or starter fluid in the carburetor. But just quits. That's after sitting all winter. I'll try all this tomorrow
I obtained a LT2000 same engine, think the clutch brake interlock is malfunctioning and it seems to have a very loose drive belt, wonder if you could address those issues some time, like your videos, thx
I have a 99 EZ 3 lawn tractor. I know these are very similar, do they take the same parts for a complete deck (42”) rebuild? Trying to find a kit that includes everything, or s much as possible…
Hey Jeff, Seems we came upon the same mower except I have the 18 HP OHV. So this tractor is real clean and has been taken care of. I was hoping that you might have some carb work to do on it so that I can see the linkages as to where they are supposed to be on this engine. Although the choke seems to be working fine, what bothers me is the governor. I know of Briggs you set it all the way to the right at full throttle. In school we never ran across a Kohler. I have two of those in the back yard and that is where they will stay. Have you got another video showing going into the carb and adjusting the governor....thanks...or if another one of your subscribers has a link that I can find...do please share thanks.
I have the same mower except I have an 18 Kohler OHV. and won't start. It has been sitting up in the shed for a year. It would run before then get hot and stop. So, this year I put in a new battery, spark plug, and filter, I have probably changed out the fuel filter as well. It turns over but it will start. I tried spaying a little ether in the carburetor, It turned over and back off. Help me. What are your suggestions? Thank you
I have seen mouse nests underneath the engine cover that cause overheating and the engine to shut down. not easy to diagnose. If it has been sitting a long time and won't start correct or run it Sounds like the carburetor needs cleaning and or rebuilt.
jeff if you still have this lt1000 can u still see the serial # under the seat 1st 6 numbers for the manufacture date, trying to remember about when i bought my Lt1000, Thanks R.T.
I have one that has been well maintained, however there is a short in the safety mechanisms of unknown origin. It starts right up and is "killed" by safety mechanisms when you let up on the brake or try to engage the blade. Any suggestions on how to track the problem to its origin.
It could be the seat safety switch, blade engagement safety switch or brake safety switch (this one was the culprit on one I had fixed). You can find testing info on TH-cam. Sometimes cleaning these switches can help too.

Hi can u help me please ? I tighten my fuel shutoff solenoid too tight and it stripped the hole on the bottom of the bowl and I now can not tighten the solenoid as tight as it needs to be. I was wondering if I can wrap the lock tight around the top of the solenoid to tighten it ? I hope so because I am unable to get the screws out of the carburetor bowl. Also I really enjoyed ur video ! I am a single widow women and I'm having to work on my mower myself. Ur video helped me in so many ways. Thank u for posting it 💓
Sorry Pam. No way to really fix that other than a new carburetor. The fuel solenoid is not needed (it just prevents the rare occassional "backfire" after shutting the engine off) for it to run so if you can somehow just use a slightly bigger bolt (not the solenoid) to attach the bowl tightly that may work in a pinch. Good luck! if you watch my videos you will notice me often ALWAYS saying "not too tight"!!!!!!!!!
I hate those paper stickers they put on them, under the seat. When they get washed away or bleached out by the sun and you can not read them. Getting parts for them can get interesting. Good thing there are so many around. I got some numbers off of another mower just like this one and so far have been able to get what I need.
Well I've tried everything here. Still doesn't seem to be getting gas beyond the fuel filter. Have a vid on carb removal? Or is there something else I could check first? Mine is Kohler.

@ Jeff's Little Engine Service I have a craftsman Lt1000 I bought used. on the side of the mower, it says the 16.5 Briggs and Stratton However apparently the motor has been changed and it's now the 17.5 Intek Briggs and Stratton. Anyway, I recently had to change the steering assembly sector gear. I removed the deck so it would be easier to work on. After getting the steering assembly in and putting everything back together and hooking the deck back up I went to start it and it turns once but won't turn again until after turning the key back off then on again where again it will only turn once and if I keep the key turned the solenoid will start clicking. It has a new battery on it only about a month old. At first, I thought maybe the deck belt was too tight around the drive pulley because it seemed like it was dragging or being held back but that was not the issue. Then I thought maybe I bopped something like the clutch pedal linkage thinking maybe it wasn't being depressed far enough. that was not it. The mower ran perfectly fine before changing the steering assembly and I did not have to do anything with the motor, clutch or anything that would stop it from starting? The only other thing I played with was the little lever on the back of the mower which I am not even sure what it does or if that has anything to do with it? Any possible hints or information you could give would be greatly appreciated. I am the grounds person at my Apartment complex and the grass needs to be cut asap.
probably not related to the steering parts swap If it is difficult to turn over a valve adjustment may be needed or the dreaded cam "compression release" component may have failed and you will need a new cam.
