    Until proper texture mapped polygon based games came along these pseudo 3D using sprites looked muched better than polygon based ones. And I think they also aged way better than the early polygon titles.

    Sprite based (pseudo) 3D is a great technique for graphics, and it could be so stylish when is well used specially when is focused towards realism. It really is the most emblematic part of late 80s and early 90s video games for all platforms, to bad developers went to the 3D polygon mesh technique so fast in mid 90s, because in that period appeared the right hardware to run games with higher resolution sprites and more complex parallel and vertical scrolling. It would be nice that modern Indie developers retake this technique with more complex sprites rather than those simplisticgraphic designs!
    And as always.. another great Retro Core Show, It really was an interesting theme for this one, very good job thank you!

    • @RetroCore

    • @leonardoantonio8756
      @leonardoantonio8756 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Retro Core
      Well I can't really make a truly technical opinion about game design, but I have worked with 3D objects in Autocad, only for architectural purposes and to display some objects in isometric projection, like water lines. Is not really that hard, but for games that require complex polygon meshes and modeled solid rendered with specific textures I think it could be very hard to make (for me), so I think it should be easier to make a layout of sprites and a background. Also I think for 3D based sprite games, the challenge is when you have to work with dynamic backgrounds and do the perspective corrections acording to the angle of the camera. In a 3D environment is easier to manipulate the point of view because is just like real life, and it doesn't have the need to modify the background drawing because the background wouldn't be a draw but a solid environment, only virtual.

    If there wasn’t such a rush to polygons in the early to mid 90’s, the Sega 32X could have been used to run these type of games more often and would have been a lot better received in my opinion. The few super-scaler games on the 32X run and look great, afterall.

Jeez "Help, help, help..." :P Really a technical genre suited to the Saturn best for all the high image memory requirements. I kind of liked the evolution of this engine type during the PS1 era of polygonal buildings and sprite characters in Japanese console games IE. building are boxy unlike people and it's hard to approximate topography with sprites. Cool feature topic. ;)

    man great work! imlearning so much About arcade games, thank you! Just a question what emulator do you use most? and whats the hardware that you use (config wise) cause i want to build myself an arcade and im inclined to buy a raspberry pi 3.do you Think this Will be enough?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Willian monteiro pires thanks for watching the videos.
      A raspberry pi 3 will run a lot of Arcade games but it will not run a lot of the more demanding games such as polygon titles or even some of there sprite scaling games.
      Personally I use an i5 Windows 7 system with 8gb of ram and a Nvidia G-Force card (can't remember the spec now) that can run PC games at Xbox I levels. As for emulators I use a variety of different ones. The main two are MAME and Final Burn Alpha but I also use Super Model for Sega Model 3 games and model 2 emulator for, yep, Sega Model 2 games and Naomi games. I also have another emulator I use for Sammy Atomiswave games. Sadly I'm not at home now so I can't check the name of it.

    Sprite-based 3D games are so charming! Definitely need Air Rescue in my life. So hopefully that one runs okay in MAME.
    And G.I. JOE was a master stroke! That game deserved every quarter crammed into it! Shame it never saw a home port, or maybe it's a blessing. We've seen what happens when they try porting games to hardware that just can't handle it...
    I think the Alien 3 game eventually made it over to the states, because I've seen it in movie theater lobbies now and then.

      Retro Core As I understand it, the show was edited and re-branded into something called "Action Force" in the UK.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the toys which were rebranded. The show was still GI Joe although I don't know if it was actually aired on normal TV over here. It came out just at a time I would have stopped watching Cartoons that much. The last shows I actively watched were TMNT, the Real Ghostbusters and Dungeons and Dragons. I don't think I watched anything newer. Of course I did watch loads of great Cartoons as a kid. I made a top 10 cartoon themes video which can be found on my channels main page.

      Awesome.. got to visit Japan one day. The gaming industry is notoriously difficult to break into on youtube. ill be honest, i think your content is top notch. i look at the evolution of some gaming channels like the gaming historian, lgr (lazy game reviews), gamesack, rerez, antdude, jontron and more, that show how much production value can 'upgrade' a channel (better cameras, mics, backgrounds etc) but what i love about them is that they each have they own 'thing' going, and that's important. they dont try to copy a formula and you are on the right track with that. your channel is unique and thats what i believe will propel you. also, since you live in Japan and a lot of your content is Japanese in nature, maybe you can highlight that as a feature of your channel. i dont see many gaming channels focusing on foreign (outside of USA, i'm from Trinidad) consoles and content and that can be used to give you more of a spotlight. finally, i would try to get a cameo or a team up video with one of the more popular channels, like a segment on their show or, better yet, feature them on a segment of your show where applicable and let them shout out your channel on theirs. thats how i discovered many channels and im sure how many other viewers did the same. I love your work and i'll continue to watch and i look forward to seeing your channel grow mate. keep at it and try new things, your fans will let you know if they like it. and dont be afraid to ask them to spread the word every now and then.
      oh and one more thing. if you're comfortable with it, talk a little more about yourself and your channel itself. people tend to support channels where they know 'who' they are supporting. q & a videos, etc are great ways to let fans in. (forgive me if you have already done these, i havent been able to browse all of your content yet, but i'm getting there ;)

    The picture of TAITO's 3D games resembles NIGHT STRIKER very much.
    These may be that a developer is the same.

    All the 3D games turned into a polygon. It is a matter of course but I regret it a little.

    Like the choices here, but I need to upgrade before sticking MAME on my PC.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the problem with a lot of these sprite scaling games. Many of them are not emulated 100% perfectly. So even with an upgraded PC you may still see some issues. MAME emulation really does eat up a lot of resources. Final Burn Alpha is better for many games however that doesn't run as much cool stuff as MAME.

    • @RetroCore

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว
