An idea that you can do with reading comprehension when the copper is not working is read your students a story and ask them questions from the story.

Losing a student is always sad! I lost 2 last year, but I also gained 2! This year I have stayed the same, no gains or losses!
So sad! I've actually lost 3 and gained 4. LOTS of fluctuation and never enough time to process the losses or additions it seems.
