I love your videos Lauren! You are so inspiring! I have a question, could you make a video about how you manage your time lesson planning and prepping before class? Just a break down of your planning routine?
Good for you for switching centers each week! I’m a first year kinder teacher with a very high class, but I’m having the toughest time getting them to appropriately work during our centers! When I try and make them fun and hands-on they find a way to play, stacking the letters into towers or doodling with the white board marker. And obviously if it’s not as appealing they’ll sit there and not even try to do the work. I feel like I’m neglecting my small groups! Have y’all had this issue?
Halle Knox Centers and Small Group are such a delicate balance!! I’ve definitely had to find a footing here between work that is cognitively demanding and work that is independent. But I’ve found my students really love centers! One thing I do that seems to keep them accountable is choose “super students” each week from their work at centers. I show off the hard work they did and reward those students. This seems to help motivate them to be on-task.
Halle Knox- I am a third year kinder teacher and have had this struggle for the last few years! This year I did 2 things that have really helped 1. Choice - if they get to choose the activity they seem to be more invested 2. Games - they seem to hold each other accountable and are more engaged when the choices are collaborative. I include a few independent choices to be able to give a quiet choice, or to tell a roudy friend they have to move to that, if needed.
I love how you share all your first year teacher revelations! I’ll be teaching next year and I know there are going to be so many learning curve moments for me regardless, but it’s always good to hear someone talk about some of the things I might encounter early!
Hailey Bruce It’s amazing that you are so open-minded and trying to anticipate some of the challenges ahead of time. You’re going to be an amazing teacher! ❤️
When you’re not feeling well get a Honey Citrus Mint Tea add Peppermint (aka medicine ball) from Starbucks! They are the best and help to make me feel better. Definitely have to try it.
We have a transient population at my school, too. At the beginning of the school year, I like to put together "new student" bags with extra name tags, folders, sticks, clips so that I'm ready. Although since you've added 5 new students, you may have gone through your "new student" bags already. I have a beginning of the year/new student bin that I keep in the closet since a lot of the things are the same. Good luck with your new student! Love your positive attitude!
Have you ever thought about making a sensory bag that your students can take with them when they are not in your room that has items that may help them (I.e. noise canceling headphones, dimple, sensory bottle, etc.)? I noticed that you said your students have some challenges with sensory input at gym but it may be happening at other locations in the school. Let me know if you need ideas for your bag! I am a future Deaf/SPED teacher.
Logan Silverman This is fantastic!!! I normally carry headphones & a lava bubbles timer everywhere we go and provide them as students request them. I don’t know why I never thought to keep them in one bag that they have ownership of - THANK YOU 💗
I often buy flowers for my desk! If I have them at home my cat tries to eat them, so it’s easier at school. And, often I feel like I am at school more than home anyway!
I SO enjoy your videos!! Sometimes they feel like a free PD that's really enjoyable! I love how you really explain how you feel about everything, from getting to school early to even thinking about how you think your new student might feel as he enters a new school. I think it's so funny how this "month" has actually felt like a year to you too! My principal actually said "Man, January has been a long year" at our staff meeting yesterday. So crazy that January gets longer every year! Also, even though I'm living in Florida now, we still are SEC Rivals-- War Eagle!! ;)
Yay! A new vlog! ☺️ I love the JANE app too. So many cute items. My students had a rough day on Thursday too! Must have been something going around that day. I love that you take time each morning to just “be still” and listen to worship music, etc. I do that sometimes in the morning and sometimes I blast the worship music in my room and walk around as I sing and pray over certain students (they’re not in school yet), and claim my classroom for the Lord!
As a nurse, I commend your school for getting the stop the bleed training!! Like you said, it’s a necessary evil. But, now you know what to do if you ever need it!
I have been loving your videos! I am a veteran teacher and I love watching your enthusiasm and excitement for teaching! I’m offf to watch the next video...I hope your new kiddo comes🤞🏼
Thanks for investing the time in making your vlogs. It’s fun to see how your first year progresses. Fingers crossed that we’ll hear in your next vlogs that your class got its new student.
Absolutely love your vlogs. Just found your channel and I can’t get enough. I am a first grade teacher in Nova Scotia, Canada and I love watching other teachers and gather ideas. I also find it interesting that your students have specials and it’s one special per week ( you mentioned that they will start music next week) We have specials but we are on a 6 day cycle and have gym 4 times a cycle and music twice a cycle and this lasts the entire year. I can’t wait to watch more of your channel 🙂
McKenzie Curvin YAY!! Can’t wait to film my sleepy face at 4:45am!!! 😂 It’s from Marshall’s/TJ Maxx. They always have some in the office/stationary section.
You’re doing an amazing job:) Did you ever think of as a positive incentive to have a desk or small table set up in your room for student of the day? They can use special pencils, paper markers etc. and rotate it out daily. They can even work their in the afternoon before school is over. The kids get into a mid year slump maybe an extra incentive will help? Good luck:)))
I teach high school and my kids were off this week too. Friday was the end of the marking period and they were stressed. Stress of their own making, but stressed non the less. I am ready for a new week. PS. If I had a first grader, I would want you to be there teacher. Every child should have a teacher who is excited to meet them and teach them.
Hi Lauren, I really enjoy your vlogs. I also think treating yourself with flowers is so amazing. I started doing that 2 years ago and I love looking at my desk with pretty flowers. I like buying carnations because they last the longest.
Honestly love your videos so much! You are such an inspiration to me! I am at university in Scotland in my final year and I am going to be a first year teacher in August! I know we are from different countries but honestly relate to your content so much and I know it is going to help me loads next year xxx please keep making videos! Best thing I'm watching on youtube xx
The Word on Third /Corey Alkire Thank you! YES Dojo is amazing. We already use ClassTag schoolwide for family communication, so I didn’t want to ask families to download another app. Plus I’ve found my kids respond well to physically adding or removing the tangible items and being able to see their “bank” for the compliment store at the end of the week. Maybe next year 🤷🏼♀️
Why don't you prep a large ziploc with "new kid" stuff that can be prepped in advance without knowing whether or not you'll get a new kid? This way you can just grab it and not worry about putting it together at the last minute.
where did you get those blue earrings you wore with the orange shirt? So cute! My class has also been a little off behavior wise.. I definitely think it's because Jan has been so long with random breaks in there. It's sometimes so hard to get into a fluid routine!! Have a great week.
I absolutely love your videos! I’m a second year first grade teacher, and love the inspiration you give me! Love the chairs you got!! Where did you get them?!
Love your vlogs!!! You also introduced me to Primarily Yours! Y’all are the best 💛 I’m a first year teacher too, so I love to watch your videos! Hope you’re having a great year!
Erin Smith Aww YAY!!! I could shout how awesome Maddie is from the rooftops, so I’m glad you’re loving her channel as well. So far, so great! We’re in this together 💗
Hey! Love your vlogs! Have you ever heard of boom learning? I use a lot of task cards in my centers and this is basically digital task cards. I think it’s $15 for a year and each deck of cards varies in price but usually only two dollars or so. You can also get decks of cards on teachers pay teachers 👍🏼 save so much time and paper!
Pro tip: store your pens, markers, dryerase upside down. They last so much longer!!!
I love your videos Lauren! You are so inspiring! I have a question, could you make a video about how you manage your time lesson planning and prepping before class? Just a break down of your planning routine?
Angelica Serrano I definitely want to do a “plan with me” type video- I’ll include the breakdown in that one!
@@puttingthemfirst I'd love this! My first year is coming up, and I'm so afraid of pacing.

🤩 where’s your lovely backpack from... is it a regular standard backpack or is it different...

I’m a elementary school teacher in Quebec, Canada and we have interactive board in every classroom ..i’m surprise you don’t!
I do the same thing! I copy things early in the morning when no one else is there!

I love the compliment idea! Class dojo would be a cool way to keep track of compliments digitally!

I love your videos & your classroom is my FAV! Where do you buy all of your tassel earrings? They are perfect!
Hailee Lewis Thank you! The pink ones are from a clearance holiday set at Target! I’ve also bought a lot from the Jane app & amazon.
Why don't you prep a large ziploc with "new kid" stuff that can be prepped in advance without knowing whether or not you'll get a new kid? This way you can just grab it and not worry about putting it together at the last minute.
I typically have one stocked. This being my 5th new student this school year I had depleted my extra supplies of things 🤷🏼♀️

I love your vlogs. You are always so positive. Where did you get your water bottles for your class?
Hi Lauren! Did your new little one ever come?
Been following you for a few weeks love your energy! Quick question what color do you use on your hair or is it natural?
I absolutely love your videos! I’m a second year first grade teacher, and love the inspiration you give me! Love the chairs you got!! Where did you get them?!

I am in love with those blue earrings
I love your videos, you inspired me to start vlogging and recording about my teaching experience.
I love watching your vlogs Lauren!! What lip color do you wear? It's so cute!!
Lauren, how did your pageant go?
Do you personally buy all the things in your room or do you get reimbursed? I am a pre k teacher and I purchase a bunch of my supplies
Hi!! Love your videos
I was wondering where you got the center that you showed a clip of , where your student was working on ham?
I've been buying myself flowers for years! Definitely worth the expense in my opinion!
Where did you get those word cards your kiddo was using in the video with ham? I would love those!
talia venez They’re from a CVC center bundle: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/CVC-Center-Mega-Bundle-Short-Vowels-5019320 🤩
Hey Lauren,
I always enjoy watching your weekly vlogs. How was the pageant?
Kerri, (A Reception teacher from London, England)
omg the little "ham"
Can you tell me where you found your larger book bins? The ones on the top of your bookcases? Thanks!
This is super random, but what do you use to whiten your teeth?😂 if you do that of course
My first grade class has 26! I would love 18 lmao
Do you use fundations? I’d love to ask you a few questions about it if you are willing! Please let me know and I can email you.
Lauren Skaggs she does
Woot! Woot! 🥳
