Thank you for shining a light on kit. If your body is 75 to 80 % of aero drag, kit must be critical. Maybe you've heard Josh Poertner tell the story of working with Lance Armstrong in the wind tunnel. He had a $5000 skin suit custom made. When donned, all were shocked to see a LOSS of ~20W. Why? The skin suit was dimensioned on a mannequin. When Lance actually put it on, there were wrinkles that caught the wind and produced drag. Good kit AND good fit are musts. I'm heartened to see how well this aligns with Dr. Xavier's comments.

100%. Never had to use chamois butter. Butt doesn't hurt. Definitely worth spending the money on good quality, good fitting kit.

I heard people saying, can just wear a dri-fit t-shirt if it is loose fit. Sure more comfortable and cheaper.

That race fit... with a cut optimized for being tucked... be warned this can fatigue an uninitiated rider. Speaking from my own experience, my body seems to subconsciously counter the position the jersey puts me into. Ever so slightly I think my body is trying to get back into the straighter more upright position it is used to. After 20 to 25 km I'm sore and exhausted. When riding in a "regular" shirt I feel no such discomfort. Most of my riding is done in an UnderArmor HeatGear compression fit t-shirt, which is fantastic btw.

    Thanks, I always thought loose-fit jerseys were a no-no!

Living in Australia we have to be very Sun conscious. I have already had skin cancer a couple of times and don’t wear short sleeves because of this. My problem is, if I get a long sleeve jersey that fits my body it finishes halfway down my arms. Solution-sleeves that fit, jersey that doesn’t and flaps in the wind.
I’d rather ride a bit slower than the alternative!

I've got castelli endurance 3s and the free aero 6 race jersey, both are great, but not perfect. There will always be little unperfect things, for the jersey I think the collar is high and the pockets are loose for me.

I ride a recumbent trike and the air flows over the body compared to a road bike. The jerseys are designed to flow air around the body. When on trike the air flows up the body instead of around the body. Is there a jersey designed for recumbent riders?

What really makes a difference in comfort is 4 way stretch. Only Castelli’s high end product have this and I have unfortunately had to send back two on paper roomier jerseys because they’re loose and tight at the same time. 4 way stretch means you can go for a tight fit but stilI and be comfortable.
I can’t see this is mentioned once in the video.

4 Way stretch is great, however there are many cheap 4 way stretch fabrics out there that don't breath well, wick sweat well nor are actually aero. Having different kinds of paneling (which might lead to not all being 4 way) can lead to a better performing jersey overall + you won't get saggy back pockets. No one needs 4 way stretch on the back as will lead to full pockets sagging down to your saddle (which is common)

Hm, with similar effects like with a golf ball and its dimples and consequently the usage of materials to imitate those effects its quite confusing why certain brands (like Castelli) dont adapt here.

    • @SaddlebackCycling
      @SaddlebackCycling 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Castelli were actually the first company to create an aero jersey (the Split Second) and aero bib shorts (Free Aero) which both used dimpled fabrics to replicate golf balls and what other pioneering aero companies were doing. It just so happens that now with the improvements in aero testing, it is no longer the fastest when applied to a cyclist.

@@SaddlebackCycling And you have data available to backup it? Because, even with bigger clothing brands for (professional) cycling, there is no consistency.

I don't mind investing in my kit, but I have to admit I'm scared.
I haven't bought bib shorts over €40, I strongly believe I should buy better bibs, however I'm scared that if they don't fit, are not as much better as I expect I will regret the purchase.
It's not like a store would take back a pair of bibs I've used or I could sell it on.

Not long ago bought castelli premio bib shorts quite honestly the best bib shorts I've ever used. With castelli you definitely need to try them on because their sizing is definitely odd.

My castelli bib shorts were not only way too small compared their size chart they also have really short shoulder straps that literally could not go over my shoulders. Will never buy castelli again

Theoretically, it's my belief that riders should not need a chamois. A chamois should bring comfort and not be a required element used to mask a bad bike fit. When getting a bike fit, I think you should be on a bare carbon saddle (i.e. a hard seat) and not wear a chamois. If you can get the bike dialed in under this circumstance, you know it's a proper fit and sans negatives hidden by seat foam.
