years back I visited London. I walked a bit purposeless through a huge recordshop. Surrounded by thousands records I walked straight towards a headphone and just put it on my head. I didn't knew what record was playing. It turned out to be Arborescence by Ozric Tentacles. (but I didn't knew that then) I had never ever heard of them before but I was blown away immediately. It just got hold of me and it took me to a magical place instantly. I just had to buy this record but I didn't knew what band or record this was and there was no one there to ask. I walked towards a random column in the middle of the huge store and saw between all the other records one recordcase that just that caught my attention. I never asked anyone, I just bought that record blind and was convinced it had to be the record I was listening to. It was until a week later that I was able to listen to that record I bought. Yes its was the music I have had heard before! I became a huge fan ever since. It was meant to be! true story.
A delight to stumble on this video, on the day I got the Ozrics latest album 'Lotus Unfolding'. I've been a fan since the late 80's, and have the same Demi Monde copy of the album you have. I remember someone in the Hawkwind community sending it to me in the post after they discovered it in a record shop in the West country. I'd lived for a few years with a poor cassette copy of questionable quality, so to hear it pristine was a revelation. A very special album, by a very special band, and I've not missed a release since. But this is golden era Ozrics; Ed, Roly, Joie, Merv and Jumping John - this lineup were untouchable and made so much amazing music in a short time. Such an evocative and totally unique band. Just wonderful, and it takes me right back to a great time in my youth. Ed's guitar work was just jaw droppingly amazing. I've tried and tried to play those dotted 8th delay guitar lines he's famous for, but no one does it like him. Imagine being in a band like this in the 80s, no-one was doing ANYTHING like it; they must've felt like pioneers. I saw the Ozrics live dozens of times in the early 90's, around the Erpland, Strangeitude and Jurassic Shift albums, great days indeed. Must catch them live again soon.
Years back, when I was waiting for a flight, I went to a record shop at the airport to bide some time. They had "Afroclonk" by the Ozric Tentacles playing, which I'd never heard before. I went straight to the counter and bought the CD on the spot. Gorgeous music!
Love love love love love this album. My gateway into Ozric wonderfulness on its release... Still got the original rice crispies box set and subsequent releases. Thanks Jim for spreading the word.... And the word is pungent!!!
Thanks for the intro. Loving it so far. I was one of those who asked where to start with this band when talking about Porcupine Tree. Definitely see the influence.
My CD version of this is on Snapper, a sub-label of Castle. These are labels closely associated with the British prog resurgence of the 1990's (Porcupine Tree were label mates.) The early Ozrics albums are all good. My fave is Erpland.
Thanks, Jim! Pretty sure I'm among those who asked where to start with Ozric Tentacles. As a Jarre/Schulze/Vangelis fan, this is right up my alley so far.
Got most of them excellent band iv listen for years awsome band seen them in my local bikers pub spread eagal in Ashton-under-Lyne loved them still do for ever bang on on all the bands you mentioned I love them all got ther records too made my day this video ❤
Marvellous.....I'm going to see them for the first time in 26 years or so in Cambridge December 1st....Certainly am looking forward to that one.... Stoner music ? I certainly haven't a clue what you're on about......smirk ;) My favourite band for over 30 years, closely followed by Rush and Killing Joke....I'm of that age (almost 60), when you saw things change and bands with it of course......So many different types of music in this era.......Still listen to a lot of shit from Prog to Electronica (System 7/ Eat Static) and old folk, dub, ambient, folk, blues, classical etc....Somethings I do loathe though = R&B, rap, top 20 rubbish etc...... Playing in a band most weekends helps keep the music alive.....until me dying day :)
I discovered OT in 2005 and probably listened to everything they released until 2016. This is a classic OT album...great choice Jim! I got to see them live in a smallish venue in Wash D.C. area back in 2014. Recently bought the solo release by Ed W that you reviewed here too.
This was defiantly a biggie when it came out and nice to have something of Ozrics finally on vinyl after having just the tapes, they were pretty good also to be fair.
Thanks for the uplifting happy music! I don't know this band much, so this is new music to stimulate my brain cells! This evening I'm going to see Stromae live in Montreal with around 10000 strangers, luckily my seat is near an exit, if ever I need air from the crowd!
@@JimNewstead thanks! This is my first show after the pandemic! I wanted to see something different than my usual prog rock shows, the last one I saw was Kiss in 2019
Lovely review and reaction Jim. I wish you'd put the extra effort into your videos to separate the track marks so that we scrobblers could add the experience into our libraries :) Their side project named Nodens Ictus by Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton has this wonderful album "Spacelines" of past recordings and live performances which isn't available on any of the streaming platforms that I know of. I never found anyone reviewing or reacting to them. One little request of me from you is for you to review/react to the to track "Sharpening The Norm" from this album. Cheers and thanks!
I love the tentacles,i think they Recordet 6 Demoos, wich i have it all on the cd release ! I lucky one !! I feel you, digesting these wonderful last track from side 1,ifeel with you !! These guys eat schroooms in those days almost dayly, pound for pound !!😁 I lucky one have the rereleases with bonus live tracks and demos, love them all 20 albums or moore, who knows !! S orry for my analog swiss-englisch 😂,and by the way,i love the magic schroooms also a lot ! Thank you
Have you heard FSOL Lifeforms? it's got quite a lot of samples from Ozrics from this time period. Most are unrecognisable though. It's a great trippy album.
Love Ozric Tentacles! Probably the best psychedelic prog band ever, they're certainly up there. I was supposed to go see them on tour with Gong tonight in Leeds but I'm unable to make it now 😔
Didn't realize you were such a stoner Jim. Great band I started listening to in the mid 90s. Become the Other and Curious Corn were my intro. So good. Ed Wynne, the leader, is the nephew of Donovan, from 60s rock fame.
Almost, but not quite! It's actually the LETTERS o and i, not numerals zero and one. And it's pronounced like the VOWEL SOUNDS only in "dotty", so no d or t sounds. But yeah, I pronounced it zero-one for years too! 😂
Hi Jim, Do I know this album…of course I do. I love their music. My first encounter with the Ozrics was a dvd of Live at the Pongmasters Ball. The flute player is so stoned 😅 How to listen: put on some headphones or use a good stereo set, close your eyes and drown yourself in the musical waves. Ever heard of the band Quantum Fantay? Similar type of music.
This is pure acid music - I'm an upstanding member of society now but back in the day....good memories!
clicked like before it even starts, because, Pungent Effulgent!
Exactamundo!!!!

Thanks for reminding me of this album Jim, I’ve not heard it for about 25years. I have the CD kicking about somewhere in the garage. Cheers
their music always makes me nostalgic for summer

Love this album! Thanks so much for listening Jim. I’m a huge fan of the Hidden Step too.

Great stuff. I missed a lot of what was going on at the time. Thank you, Jim.
Love this album... Strangetude was my first from Ozric Tentacles.

Just seen Ozric Tentacles playing at Leeds. Still great to see live.
Always down for some Ozrics...
And if anyone's ever down for some live Ozrics, check out Live at the Pongmasters Ball. It's fantastic.
Yes, yes it is!

My first time hearing them was actually live about 1989 or 1990 - at Strawberry Fair in Cambridge!
Taken me twenty years to listen to a track by these guys. Bloody marvellous. Is there a side 2 yet from you Jim ?
Patience! Yes, tomorrow :)
This was defiantly a biggie when it came out and nice to have something of Ozrics finally on vinyl after having just the tapes, they were pretty good also to be fair.
Absolute classic Jim, so good.

Seeing them in Falmouth, December with Gong.

Mmmm, Eternal Wheel was the song from Erpland.
That was fun.

My first experience of Ozrics was 91's Afterwish, and it's still one of my favourites.
Yup, this came out when I started smoking pot - what a coincidence.

how are you managing to listen on headphones and still communicate with the mic without changing the volume of your voice? Quite a skill.
Is it? I don’t know… I didn’t realise it was a thing!
I could of sworn this was a band called Exchange. Tripsville daddy-O
