    From the looks of it, the stove was only spot welded, not welded solid.
    Love the shots of the northern lights. I remember when I was a kid (50 years ago lol) before there was so much light pollution here in southeastern Ontario, there was about 5-6 times a winter we could see the northern lights.

    That’s awesome how you took something that could’ve possible just ruined your trip, but you turned it around and made things work out in your favor. That positive attitude helps a lot of people. Had to add that that ham looks amazing!

    So glad you brought us along as well Jay. Glad to see the Beast back in action. That stove sure has been loyal and I'm glad you still had it there as back up when the one in the tent failed. The northern lights are quickly moving up to the top of my bucket list. I wonder how far north one has to go before being able to see them. I feel a road trip coming on next winter. Thank you again for such a great video Jay. Blessings.

    My thoughts, the stove was held together with spot welds, heat/cool cycles were just too much for it. if the bottom was formed into a J shape so the bottom slid into the J locking it into place maybe that would have avoided the issue. Anxious to see the new stove you were talking about.

    • @jaylegere
      @jaylegere  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It definitely sounds like you know a lot more about welding than me. ha. I'm just glad I still had the barrel stove.

      Take care.

      My thoughts too Scott. I didn't see any spot welds, but I may have missed it, having done very little welding myself. It just looked like it. I still love the barrel stove, and can't wait to see the russian bear tent back in action as well.

    I was quite concerned when you showed that you had cut a larger damper hole in the stove without having an immediate solution to close it up tight. That combined with dry softwood can be a risky combo in getting your fire too hot for a small stove to handle, especially a stove that has an exploitable design fault like that. Glad you were able to safely make the switch out. Honestly, like the old stove more.

    Thank God you found the hole in the stove. We all would have felt terrible if anything happened to you. That’s scary. Food looks great, I love ham with fried potatoes, beans and ham are really good too. Stay safe and God Bless you. 😊

    I smelled the smoke in my room when I saw you carry the hot coals on the little shovel out of the tent. LOL

    Awesome work Jay, and bang on your decision to change out the stoves, I'd hate to rely on a propane two burner stove for heat in a non insulated camp in the winter. That ham looked delicious !! I'm going to make one this week

    Love what you are doing, love your channel. Awesome hearty meals. I spent 30 years up north, between NWT, Yukon, James Bay and Beaufort Sea. I am retiring this year back and moving back east. I just ordered a 16X24 insulated tent with a 10 ft porch to bring back with me. I spent a lot of time in tents on jobs and living with the Native people. Loved every minute of it. I know exactly how you feel when you are out there. The peace and quiet and admiring nature. All your worldly troubles disappear , no stress and so relaxing. The things you are doing is not work it is enjoyment and relaxing. You are doing it right with by experimenting and learning. Good luck and I will be following along with you. By the way I lived in Yellowknife for a while in the early 90’s. Cheers
