Hot tent camping alone in the forest

  • When it's always cold and you are camping, you need a good source of heat ... and a good mode of transportation. It appears I have neither!! In my canvas tent, I use a wood stove. If you use a wood stove you need to make sure it's suitable for your needs. When it comes to my new little wood stove, I'm not convinced it's good enough. Today I need to make a little modification to improve it.
    Also, have you ever poured boiling water over your ride in hopes that it will start???
    New antlers and delicious all-beef hot dogs top off this fun episode in the woods.

    Stove mass, firebricks and baffles are the key to a good and efficient woodstove. As soon as that damper is in place one will always get a bit of smoke out of the door if open. Wood burning stoves are very efficient at burning firewood to produce heat thanks to a number of efficiency-enhancing designs such as baffle plates and controllable air vents. Hardwoods are always better than softwoods, but up North not always easy to find. You are getting there, hope the new stove helps out Jay.....Fred in Thunder Bay.Ontario

    You looked like a little boy getting his first train set for Christmas when that sled started! I had to giggle! I hope the sleepover went well, my dad used to love making breakfast (usually pancakes and bacon & eggs) for 10 little girls when I was little and had my birthday sleepovers. I lost my dad in 2012 to cancer and I miss him as much or more today than I did the day he passed. I’m sorry you lost your father so young Jay, it sounds to me like you have a bevy of memories to lose yourself in and warm your heart in. I am glad however that your mum has found someone to share her life with and that you and he get on so well. I wasn’t so welcoming of my mum’s new beau until I saw how happy he made her and that was enough for me to give him a chance. They’ve been together 9 years now and he’s a great guy. I’m also really happy you didn’t have to walk back to the vehicle in that cold 🥶!

    Jay, I have every confidence that somewhere on the block of your sled you can find a place to attach a silicone oil pan heater. The same as those used on oil pans of cars. They have assorted sizes, with assorted wattages and none of them use that much power. Just plug in to your Jackery when you arrive, toss the cover on the sled to hold in heat.

    I've never seen a damper that low. Usually they're about 5 feet or so, but you do you. Loving the channel. On our camp stove we have knobs(?) on each door that screw in or out to allow air flow. Your solution seems quite small. If you were to enlarge that you might get better air flow.

    • @erichawes304
      @erichawes304 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought they same thing about the damper... He kinda forgot to let us know if it made a difference🤣 but I assume him dealing with this snowmobile took over all other thoughts... Nobody wants to leave a perfectly good ride and walk for over and your in hip deep snow when its 30 below out🤣😎

    Hi Jay, I know that feeling of 'oh crap'.. getting a machine to try and start. I had some issues with my quad a month or so ago - when we hit -38c temps in Haliburton Forest here in Ontario.... my quad actually dropped in voltage... and I had to boost it, but I keep a tent heater at my cabin with a propane bottle, just in case - and I put it under my quad to heat up the battery and whatnot.... covering the machine also really helps - even if its just a tarp.. it keeps the frost from getting into the parts and freezing them - I swear ..even if its only for a short while, that its the best thing to do. I've never had to deal with a frozen fuel pump... but I've had to use gas line anti-freeze a few times, and keep some in both the quad and sled. Great video as always.

    An important lesson learned here. Be sure to ride your snowmobile with a full bladder. 😆 Seriously though, why wouldn't you buy a Ski-Doo? I could see buying a Yamaha for a motorcycle or ATV, but snowmobile? The snowmobile was invented in Canada back in the 30's and is the industry's most popular and brand. I rode a 2005 BMW Rotax-powered dual sport motorcycle for years and never had a problem. Routine maintenance and tires. Thats it. My youngest son has it today and continues to put it through its paces. Most reliable bike I've ever owned. I hear the same from my friends in AK. For backcountry reliability they ride Ski-Doos. Just my opinion. Be well. Happy trails.

    Hi Jay, that's a good trick to get your snowmachine started. I learned that same trick years ago from some Alaska Native people when I lived out in remote Alaska. Native people are natural mechanics. It's always great to see you back at the wall tent, my favorite place to visit with you. I like your new coat hanger, it's pretty cool. The hot dogs did look good only, a little to much ketchup and mustard for me, gotta have chopped onions. Glad the stove is working for ya. I like the idea of the mesh on top, makes it nice for toasting. Are you still getting a different stove for the tent?
