It's OK being able to own a gun as long as you don't shoot people with it, as I understand here in the UK people get a gun licence to use the gun at a gun club. The licence doesn't then allow them to use the gun outside the gun club, the gun stays at the club securely locked up. Unless it's a shotgun etc for example to be used for huntung shooting rabbits, pigeons etc. But I don't think you could justify owning a hand gun such as 44 magnum to shoot rabbits for example

I have a 357 Magnum Model 686 4" barrel White outline Brushed that I've had for over 40 years, although I sold a 357 Magnum Mod 66-2 brushed 6" barrel for the same price as I'd paid over 10-years after purchasing it. It was bought by an Okaloosa County FL Deputy Sheriff. We also used that 686 with the Sheriffs Law Enforcement Posts, because all of the deputies at the meeting were carrying were automatics, and you can't show the difference with a pistol. I took one of the deputies out to my truck opened the tail after turning off the alarm system and unlocked the gun case and allowed the deputy to see what I had with me. We took the weapon back into the SO's office and then let the Advisor see the weapon and then show the cadets the differences. But it surprised him and the 10 other deputies at that meeting. One of them bought that model 66-2. The one comment was the trigger wasn't touchy enough. My comment was I didn't want a hairline trigger on any weapon. Yeah, I also have a G Lock Mod 19 but prefer the 686 to it.

Shooting full power .44 Magnum loads out of my 4" Taurus Model 44 IS indeed fun....with the factory porting/comp. chamber. It's actually controllable.

    • @plowboysghost
      @plowboysghost 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@Craig Wooldridge No, it's because I have enough personal experience with Taurus to cut through the brand snobbery and misinformation that interweb fools repeat.
I have several $1000+ guns that others may not appreciate. Some are muzzleloaders. So, I'm not against spending more to get what I want, but I passed up a (cheap) unfired 4" 629 for $700 and gave $535 out the door for my Model 44.
I've shot mine enough to know that i made the right decision for what I wanted a 4" .44 Mag for...and I'd make the same choice every time.
There's nothing WRONG with the S&W, there's just not enough to be gained to make it worth the extra $$$ to me...and I'm not buying guns to make money on them.
I'm buying guns I want to keep and shoot.

Thank you, Hickok, for this wonderful video.
Those older, P&R’ed, N Frames that Smith produced through the early 1970’s were, in my opinion, the finest generally available and largely affordable revolvers ever made. Their quality, craftsmanship, reliability, durability and accuracy are superb. And they remain entirely viable for so many purposes (home defense, concealed carry, hunting, target shooting, and plain enjoyable plinking). I don’t own a M29 from that era, but I do love my five-inch barrel M27-2 (.357 magnum/.38 Special). FWIW, I really prefer the five-inch barrel length; it’s still short enough to be handy and concealable (at least in the colder months), but that extra inch provides slightly more velocity, sight radius, and recoil mitigation. Further, it’s an optimized length between purely defensive and hunting revolvers.
I envy your M29. Cherish it and fun with it.

The blued 29-2 with the counterbored cylinders in 4" was my favorite, I had added Pachmayr grips much like Nick Nolte had in "48 Hours". It was a dream to shoot, the 180gr Rem.HP threw fire for about a block, I used HSM 250gr magnums for qualification, because 44 special were almost twice the price of magnums, and I had to supply my own ammo as the gun was non-issued. It got stolen from my brother's car in the mid 80s. He bought me an Elmer Keith commemorative, which I have yet to shoot, as a replacement.
My 28-2 is a 6 inch and it really tames the 357, although today's ammo is much more tame than that of the 1980s. If I could get that gun back...

I owned one of these in the early 1980s... short version: as dusk approached on a dirt back country road, a buddy razzed me about the ridiculously short barrel and said he bet that I couldn’t hit a softball sized rock at about 30 yards down the old road. A quick draw later, a HUGE ball of flame and super-thunderclap shattered our senses! Once our vision was restored in the almost dark road, I was pleased to point out that the aforesaid rock was gone... all in primitive hand signs as it was an hour until our hearing was back to normal. I sold it the following week... I still had my 12 inch heavy barrel in .44mag, and loved shooting it... during the day... and while wearing hearing protection!

Hickok45 is phenomenal, he just taught me that a 44 mag shooting 44 Special is considerable easier to manage the recoil which leads to improved acuracy. I have been shooting my .357 Ruger LCR with full on magnum rounds, my hand gets bruised from 15 rounds to the point I put it up and shoot one of my other weapons. I will still load pistol with magnum rounds as I carry it concealed however, I will buy some .38 special to practice.

The original Model 29 that was called for in the 1st Dirty Harry movie script, the writers called for Callahan to have the 4 inch barrel. However, they were unable to acquire one when shooting of the movie began. They were able to get hold of the 6 incher. They were forced to go with the 6 incher and so it was history. Even back in the late 60's early 70's the 4 incher was hard to come by. Personally, I have the 4 incher and prefer it to the 6 incher. I bought it brand new and came across it by accident from a private seller. I use it not only as my CCW, but for target shooting as well. I use fingerless target shooting gloves that keeps me from getting those blood blisters. I'm a large person and use Signature 220 grain, makes it easier on my wrists. I'm old school and this weapon works for me why would I change?? Thanks for the positive video on the 4 incher 29. I appreciate your humor and humility you demonstrate to this weapon. The first feature film that features the Model 29 is Point Blank from 1967. The main character, a man only known as Walker (portrayed by Lee Marvin), wields a 4" blued S&W 29-2. Maybe the screen writers for Dirty Harry got the inspiration from that movie but couldn't find a 4 incher. I think that the 6.5 incher is a little more imposing but still balanced enough. The 8&7/8 incher is really for insane characters that want to overcompensate or doesn't mind the lack of practicality. Ergo, it was ideal for guys like Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver.

Perhaps it is a little late commenting on a video from 2-years ago, however I see several from just a month ago so why not?
KUDO's to Greg for hitting the "verbal bullseye" again!
The 44-mag is a handful of recoil with full service loads even with custom grips or gloves. To many, it is down right painful.
It is nice having the foot-pounds of energy when needed, however what really motivates me to shoot my 29-2 (8 3/8") is the amazing accuracy from reduced loads with 44-mag brass or standard loads from 44-special brass using Berry's 240-gr. plated bullets (for example).
When you can shoot off-hand and put 6-rounds into a 2" circle at 25yards, you will walk away with a big smile because very few people can do that with a revolver or pistol.

Elmer Keith was a true legend. He was once guiding a elk hunt, his client wouldn’t take a 600 yard shot from one mountain ridge to another. He told Elmer he wasn’t comfortable make a shot that far. Elmer told him he could make that shot with his 4” Model 29 and did. He explained that to make such a shot you just had to know how much front sight to hold up. He was an amazing man.

You are absolutely right about the 4” Model 29 in blue, an original Model 29-2, blue with 6.5” barrel, a 4” Model 629 and a Model 29-10, 50th Anniversary. I want a 3” and an 8 3/8” to round out my collection. I’m on the fence about this model in a 2.5” format, on one side I’d love to have it for my collection but on the other I’ve not seen anyone shoot a 2.5” model and not grimace from the recoil. Well, at any rate, I certainly enjoyed the video.

Also, the thing I LOVE about Smith's, especially the 70's and early 80's guns, is they have a wonderful double action trigger. The '2 click' trigger, you can almost stage it, and line up on your target. Now, if your good, you get get real fast and accurate with the double action pull. Try it. Get your Smith out(make sure it's unloaded)and slowly pull on the trigger! Doesn't get any better than those Smith's.

I've bought quite a few used revolvers over the years. Mostly Rugers, some Smiths, a few Taurus. When you learn how to read a gun for wear and tear, buying used saves a lot of money. I've bought several that were technically used but had never been shot. When I bring a new to me revolver home the first thing I do is pull the grips off, clean and oil the gun. You'd be surprised how many gun owners never pull the grips. If the grips don't come off there is never oil applied and it will rust. Lubricants do evaporate.

The S&W model 29 in 4" was popular with the Houston police officers in the 70's and 80's. They could carry their own gun. When my department allowed us to carry our own they would not allow .44's but would allow 1911's .45 acp. Thats what I opted for and still carry it today 40 years later.

Usually people will burglarize a home when the occupants "are not home." Hence get a good dog that barks and looks intimidating. I gave up on burglar alarms. And currently have a beautiful female Doberman who's 7 months old and fully trained to secure and attack too. The expense of the dog and subsequent professional training cost over $2k. Which same amount would be invested in equipment and monitoring services (annually and indefinitely). I did put up some outside/inside cameras that simply record to my pc and the cloud. Which I could always provide to PD if needed. However, I seriously don't think anyone is getting past Abby (Doberman). She's even trained to Not take food from strangers. So potential burglar's can't attempt to sedate or kill her per se. Residing in central TN on quite a bit of land (just over 200 acres) and 20 minutes from anything. I feel my family and home is quite secure. If someone is home (usually the case), we have firearms for the ready.

The famous 4" 44 Magnum. First time this was ever used for the screen was in the Lee Marvin 1967 movie 'Point Blank'. As the story goes it was the first film to use a 44 Magnum and in the sequence where Lee shoot blanks at the bed (Slow motion sequence) Lee shot blanks and because of the 44's rep for being the most powerful handgun in the world at that time, his "Recoil action" was super over exaggerated as he thought the real thing would be almost unbearable to handle. It was not until later when he shot live rounds (Apparently when filming the Alcatraz) did Lee show disappointment as the real recoil was nowhere near as powerful as he imagined. And as such, was underwhelmed by the gun.

There is such a variety of bullet weights and styles for the hand loader to choose from. The 4"model, as you pointed out , can be quite painful to shoot with full power loads. However, with slightly reduced loads with lighter bullets can be very pleasant to shoot and still have plenty of power for hunting medium size game, such as hogs and deer. 240gr lead semi-wadcutter bullets loaded to about 900fps are a delight to shoot. As much as everyone loves their 44 mag that recoil is what led me to try and fall in love with the .41 mag. That recoil is still there but in a much more efficient cartridge. You can cast the lee 210 gr tumble lube bullet and 6 grains of bullseye and have the power and accuracy of a plinker round cheap to make. Those beautiful revolvers of the 70's last so much longer with the extra weight of more metal for the slightly heavier 41 models than the lighter and harder recoiling 44. Try any 6" 41 mag wether from Ruger or Smith&Wesson and have a 44 mag revolver in the same configuration, say a 6" model 57 vs a 6" model 29. Shoot them both and decide for yourself. You'll go through one clylinder of a 44 and you'll try the 41 and take it home!

Matthew Avery It’s a corrosion resistant finish that turns the metal a dark blue. It was/is used on older automatics like Lugers and 1911s but most newer autos use a nitride finish because it’s more durable. Revolvers still use it because it’s more traditional, I guess.

It's done to carbon steels, not stainless. It's a chemical process, and to do it well, the steel has to be mirror smooth. So, it's expensive to do it right. Thus, lots of black matte finishes exist today.

Houge is great for making a punishing gun (unless you into that, TMI if you are) fun to shoot again. I shoot .44 spl. in my .44 magnum Vaquero and it is fun to shoot. The only reason for the expense of .44 spl is not enough people shoot it often enough. I don't understand that because it is still a fantastic round.
