  • In The Godfather Part II, Don Michael Corleone survives an assassination attempt and must find out who tried to have him whacked, with the main suspects being Hyman Roth and Frank Pentangeli.
When Frank flips, his right hand man Willie Cicci also testifies against Michael ("The family had a lotta buffers"). But what happened to Cicci after the film? Check out the video to find out the plans for Cicci in The Godfather Part III, where it seems Francis Ford Coppola had the character in mind to be the street boss of New York and the Corleone Crime Family.

He wouldn't be the first snitch to become the boss of a crime family. If you do the research, you'll find that Lucky Luciano himself was a snitch, stemming from an arrest for narcotics. All those codes that they supposedly live by are b.s. and always have been. Ultimately, they are gang members with little more honor than the Bloods, Crips or MS 13. Another thing they all have in common with the mafia is that they all prey upon the poorest and most vulnerable of their own kind.

Glad you did an episode on Willie Cicci. I was surprised by his testimony in the movie. After all he was a known hitman. Also, I always liked Cicci's character, he was cool and a link to the modern day unlike any other Godfather character I can think of off hand. I say that because the mid 50s to the mid 70s is only 20 years and the Godfather has such an old school vibe to it. But, the new guys like the Rosato brothers were based on the Gallo brothers and later Joey Zaza on John Gotti I think, it comes together. Thanks!

I would have assumed that he would get a similar deal to Pentangeli. Willie Cicci was also just another victim caught up in the scheme by Roth. He would have never voluntarily betrayed the Corleone unless he thought he was betrayed. Perhaps Tom also visited Willie, thus Cicci officially retracts everything he testified to, thus perjuring himself. Then proceeds to commit seppuku to restore his honour and to protect his family.

I like how in the Godfather movies, you can find that many of the characters are based partly on real life people. I imagine Vito Corleone could have been based on Carlo Gambino and Don Barzini on Vito Genovese with Hyman Roth on Meyer Lansky, Moe Green on Busy Siegel and Willie Cicci on Joe Valachi, Luca Brasi on Willie Moretti, the Rosato brothers on the Gallo brothers and Joey Zasa on John Gotti. Not to mention Johnny Fontane on Frank Sinatra. I imagine there are many more, i could be wrong but it seems they are similar

Yes those people were all the inspirations for the characters you named. I watched Peter Boyle play "Crazy Joe" and as I was watching it, it struck me that the Bob Dylan song "Joey" was about Joe Gallo, and nearly every line in the song mirrored a scene in the Peter Boyle film!

His involvement in the unsanctioned helicopter attack wiping out the other bosses showed he was ambitious and power hungry, much like Gotti when he ordered the unsanctioned Castallano murder, definitely not the same I know but I do think Zasa was based on Gotti to some degree

Although based on real people and events it is not a documentary, more of a fictionalized rendering and will fit in with this channels format of fictional crime shows. Add to that the multi overlaying plots, the exotic locales and music, this is a first-rate production that pulls you into its universe.

Cicci survives, gets amnestied and promoted to Capo de Regime!
    Here’s how it plays out:
After the attempt on Michael at Lake Tahoe, Michael goes to Pentangli and says, “It was Hyman Roth”. Then goes to Roth and says “It was Pentangeli”. Next thing you know Frankie Five Angels is hit (though it failed), supposedly by Michael.
All those hits during the ‘Baptism of Fire’ and none of Michael’s hitters utter a ‘Michael Corleone says Hello’ to anyone. Not the Moe Greene hit, Not Barzini…no one.
No one acting under Michael’s authority would ‘sign’ a hit like that. Michael would never tolerate a such breach of discipline or security. Michael didn’t even cop to Carlo’s murder under pressure from Connie and Kay.
“Never tell anyone outside The Family what you’re thinking”
Michael offering up a loudly disgruntled Frankie Five Angels as bait just to confirm his suspicions about Roth, is sound strategic thinking and a worthy sacrifice. Like a feint in combat operations. Roth reacted with the Pentangeli hit almost immediately.
Let’s not forget we’re talking about a WWII combat veteran Marine infantry officer. He would know a thing or two about winning a fight.
Of course Frankie’s regime would take it personal like both Tessio’s and Clemenza’s before The Baptism. Enough to even speak out against Michael, who would appear to have abandoned The ‘olive oil’ business? Yep.
Cicci and the others in the Pentangeli Regime were already feeling abandoned, right? So much the better to sell the ruse to Roth
After defeating Roth, all members of the former Pentangeli Regime get amnestied. Cicci was ride or die for his captain and and deserves a clean slate and a promotion to Capo de Regime
    My 2¢

if cicci were in the third movie, my best guess would be that michael put cicci up to the testimony in some way- his paranoia and hatred of traitors wouldn't be a factor if cicci were literally doing as he was told, and it seems like it may not actually have been true that cicci always had buffers between himself and the people giving the orders, so it would be at least _reasonably_ plausible that it was all part of the master plan

Check out Joe Barboza outta Boston. He was a hitman who ended up having a beef with his crew and ended up testifying, with a similar "slimy" appearance as Cici during his testimony. Definitely some inspiration taken there.
I suspect his inclusion in III was an early idea just to bring back a familiar name. The entire mob aspect of part 3 really feel somewhat half assed, so I wouldn't be surprised that they were looking for someone easy to bring back as an antagonist. I'm glad zasa ended up being used, as he was one of the highlights of 3 for me.

Michael Corleone was extremely smart however not perfect. He couldn't figure out Hyman Roth until it was too late. It cost him the lives of Frank Pentangelli and Willi Cicci.
He should have followed the advice of his character in The Devil's Advocate when he advised Keanu Reeves to keep his nose to the street. With all his "Big Deals" he forgot the guys on the street. He placed himself in an Ivory Tower and forgot the streets.
I will give you an example/analogy of what I am talking about. Let's say you are in relative good health and visit your doctor every 6 months or yearly which is the norm.
If you didn't visit your doctor in a year

More then likely died in oblivion somewhere hiding in witness protection under an assumed name after the hearings therefore Michael couldn’t find him or get to him so they focused on the bigger fish that was out in the open arriving back to the us (hyman Roth) perhaps they could’ve added a few lines in the scene where Michael asks where’s chi chi and his circle answers it’s too difficult he’s Hiding with no trace

I think he went into witness protection but didn't stay in it long. And most likely went back into a life of crime and got put in jail. I even think some investigators looked into the murders he confessed to doing in front of the Senate committee and linked him to them.

You don't know who is "loyak" until they face time, death, sreious injury or financial ruin. Omertà or not. I think the explanation is simple. Cicci became an informant to get a reduced sentence. He was put in solitary confinement for ten years and then resettled to a small city in the Midwest working as a store clerk. Michael had a contract on him but he was never found by the Mafia.

I think he was told what to say and how to say it without actually incriminating Micheal. He had no choice after being at the scene of the crime so has to look like he is cooperating without saying anything about Micheal giving the order to do these things. If he was a threat he surely would of been killed if Micheal thought he was going to be someone that would put him away. I mean why tell the truth about middle men if he wants Micheal to go down. he was part of Frankie’s family and that doesn’t just mean his blood line relatives who in the end are to be looked after after his death as he is the one that is the threat. so Cicci is probably looked after but not to be allowed to continue as a part of the Corleone family. part 3 is completely stupid and was a cash grab when Coppola needed money so he would of wrote as much of the old cast as possible and we all know Robert Duval hated the idea and wanted no part of it so whatever happened would of made no sense in the 3rd part, the fact Duval’s character is replaced by George Hamilton as another Loyal Lawyer who is not Italian says everything about that movie. why did he get another Irish like lawyer by his side? I bet they thought he would just be the same character but changed their minds because he looks so different and knew the audience would not see him as that same character as well as such a poor choice for this Kind of movie in general.

I always thought willi cicci looked more like Joe Barboza when he was testifying and Pantangale was supposed to be like Joe valachi ( in importance anyway; I know in real life they never worked together) I've heard this Cicci part 3 story before and I just want to confirm: it was actually Willi Cicii coming back and not just Joe Spinnell playing another part, kind of like when Vito in "the sopranos" is a random deli customer, before Christopher shoots the deli clerk lol..as good as Spinells acting, that would of just added to the part 3 drama and critics

Willie got buffed, that family had a lot of them according to him. In all seriousness, I did not know he was based off Joe Valachi. If that's the case, his fate would've been the same, died in prison in the Cicci Wing of whatever prison he was incarcerated. His motive of betrayal is sort of justified from his point of view, as with Valachi [who thought Vito Genovese was going to kill him]. The Godfather III plans sounds ridiculous and thankfully [not because of Joe Spinell's passing] it never went through.
