    These digitations seem to double as great concentration exercises, every time I try to do something like this on my guitar I have to focus very hard to not let my thoughts drift from the task. Great video Nathan!

    • @ethanlancaster76
      @ethanlancaster76 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      arceom07 I can definitely relate to what you’re saying, when I really get in a groove and I feel like I’m playing well I find myself in a zone where I don’t even remember what I was thinking about other than the music. Music and especially music theory are often compared to math, but for me it’s more like a language that shares ideas that are spoken and when heard your hands seem to follow your ears automatically without having to think about it somehow. I see shapes and patterns or blocks of notes and intervals. Other than the intervalic relationship of the notes on the fretboard I’m not consciously doing any math. For me when it comes down to really playing my best and getting in a groove and improvising with a band or other players I’m mostly playing by feel and really try to be all ears and hear what everyone else is playing and that’s the majority of my focus. The rest is probably about expressing the ideas and what I have to say musically.

    I was very fortunate to have a great guitar player for a father and this is very similar to the exercises he showed me when I first picked up the bass over 30 years ago and I still use it to warm up and get my fingers under me so to speak. I also use string changes and skipping to get my fingers on my fretting hand a little more stretched out while warming up my right hand. Great video as usual bro!

    Really nice, almost the ultimate chromatic exercise, lol. I think the last step would be changing frets with every string change. I realized many times I can't play songs even when I could theorically do it because I can play the exercise because of the fret movement. Being used to the movement of the arm through the fretboard is important too.

    These are the same exercises I do when I'm just sitting there watching something on the computer. It gets far more difficult once I cross strings with these patterns, so the four notes are not played on the same string each cycle. Your hand turns into a drunken spider at that point.

      Hey, Mark! I'm sorry to hear about your plucking finger, man. I injured my fretting middle finger a few years back and couldn't play the same for six months - I was bummed. In that time, I drew encouragement from the stories and playing of Django Reinhardt, Tony Iommi, and Frederik Thordendal. You might also find James Jamerson's picking technique inspiring. It's amazing what he played with just his index finger.
