Josh makes these kind of videos that gives you the urge to pick up your bass immediately and start playing. No showing off. No flexing. Just pure motivation. Thanks mate.
When Josh says "it'll take a long time" to get rid of the flying fingers, take it to heart. I've been playing for years, but never really focused on economy of motion until recently. I've been focused on proper technique for about four months and I've improved but still am not to where I want to be. Don't get discouraged if you're not keeping your fingers down after only a couple weeks of practice!
Same. been focused for a few months in developing technique (both hands) after playing for years with pluck and no sense of proper finger placement. It's great to start feeling the improvement!
Working on this as well lol. Wait... are there enough commenting here that this constitutes a support group?!? My name is Brian and I'm recovering from flying fingers...
Learning bass was a childhood dream of mine but my parents wouldn’t let me 😢 Just yesterday I realised, hey, I am 33, now I can learn it if I want! So I ordered stuff and I am looking forward learning with your videos ❤
Can relate to that! My parents never let me take music lessons as a teenager. Picked up a bass at 19 and played more seriously when I started music lessons with a teacher at 25. Now 43 playing music with bands since my 29th birthday. My father's behavior has become my music drive never to quit!
I have to admit, when I first started going through this video my first instinct was to blow through the exercise, but it's more challenging than I anticipated; especially trying to play it clean and clear. And I've been playing for over 30 years! Thanks for keeping the old dog in line!
I had this bookmarked for later reference and just got around to it today. True, it is a little tricky to play clean. On first few passes I kept stylishly sliding in to the 6th fret instead of just playing it plain as intended. It was actually hard to stop myself from doing that.
This guy is great. I’m halfway through his (paid) lessons and in less than 2 weeks I can play along with my (hugely more experienced) mates in their band. This is no paid promo (I don’t even know the dude…I live in Australia!) but I guarantee you, if you want to learn the bass, pay him his money…it’s not much…and have him teach you.
If you can play bass with people instead of sitting in a room on your own, you might find the inspiration and excitement of playing along with others keeps you going. Especially if you can gig. That’s how it’s gone for me. I have been lucky to play with some amazing musicians.i am completely rubbish at bass the weakest link in the band. But I practice my ass off to try and not let down the people I am in a band with. He is right! Only find inspiration from others. So what your not as good as others. They are doing their thing. You are doing yours. Least your playing .Things of great value are seldom achieved instantly . If music was easy it would be boring
I've been a professional music educator for 4 decades. This is the best bass teaching video that I've seen. I'm so glad that I've stumbled across your channel. I'll quickly refer you to all my students.
Music teacher starts a youtube video and walks out for a smoke break, joking... I'm taking the Bass Buzz course and I'm having so much fun with it, Josh is an awesome teacher. I'm 58 years old and my elementary music teacher put me in a corner with a triangle because I couldn't sing in tune. Totally turned me off from learning an instrument at a young age. But I'm back! And I can groove!
Alright so, gotta say it: this is the best bass class video on the internet. And having watched only this I can bet is the best bass channel on TH-cam right now. Everything is on point; good delivery, no stalling, comprensible explanations, great sense of humor, LOTR memes. This is peak bass
6 weeks ago I started bass lessons irl. I'm 54 and always loved bass, but never thought of playing it myself, now suddenly I thought, hey why not. I'm never gonna excel or anything, but just to play along with some simpler tunes would make me happy. I am gonna do this excercise daily now. Not even at 100bpm yet, but whatever, I'll get there. You're stimulating me to do more, so thanks and keep up the good work 👍
Josh, you are one if the few bass coaches here on TH-cam who can make practicing things like this fun and entertaining. And you don't need to apologize for being funny.
The effort you put in is outstanding! You are the best teacher and I love how you play with Squires and not expensive instruments... you rock! You really make learning bass what its supposed to be... fun!
Been on and off drums since 95, played marching band symphonic, and orchestral even was in a metal band after high school. Got to play the whiskey agogo. Haven’t played a large handful of year. Felt mental health slowly dying because of no outlet. Today I bought second hand bass. I’m going to use your lesson here. I belive in myself and will get somewhat okay. And when I am. I have a specific new one I’m going to buy. Todays purchase the Schecter omen 4 string this is the start of a new chapter. Then when I’m ready I’m buying the Schecter omen elite 5 string. Man it’s beautiful
I just love this video, it’s not « PLAY THIS EXERCISE TO BECOME AN UTRLA BASSIST » and it’s juste one stupid exercise that I’ve been playing for months. It’s so much more than an exercise, it’s how to use the exercise in an intelligent manner. Learning how to approach learning. Because very few people will teach you how to learn properly. Thanks josh you are awesome 🤘🏻
I got a Bass for my birthday an now i have to learn to play it, so much to learn, now i have to get a amp so i can hear my mistakes an how it sounds, I'm so excited though! 🎸🎸😊
Josh is the kinda guy I like to watch even tho I play bass for years know just because of three things: first he's super nice to listen, second even advanced players can sometimes learn new stuff and third ... Did he really just tapped the chords and played a walking bass line ? Damn josh, keep your great work up.
This exercise was truly outstanding. It pinpointed exactly what I needed to practice, is easy enough to play without an amp, and wasn't so repetitive that it would make me lose focus. Incredible work! 🙇♀
Level 3 is also good for pick players, as it teaches you to alternate pick when moving between strings instead of doing two consecutive downstrokes or upstrokes, which is something that beginners on pick usually do (me included). Neat exercise, Josh!
A bought my first bass literally a few days ago and have been watching dozens (hundreds?) of videos for a total beginner and this is the best I’ve found. When my son bought drums, he immediately tried some Slipknot songs and I implored him to start like this video and build from absolute zero. Thank you!
I'm so green at bass, been drumming for 30+ years. I've been learning for a few months now and I absolutely love playing the bass... this video has helped alot of my problems and my progress.. my only difference is I'm missing almost half of my middle finger on my fret hand and my nub doesn't reach well so I get a little flying sometimes and have had to make some things work that aren't optimal... but thank you for making these videos!! It's very helpful and encouraging!!!
I’ve been doing this practice every day for three months, never picked up a guitar before then- and it’s considerably improved my playing. The overall sound quality has changed form sounding incomplete with that metal scraping sound to a much cleaner bass tone. My finger dexterity has improved a lot too, and it’s much easier to go back and forth between my index and middle finger ‘plucking’ than just using my index for everything. At this point I’d say the most ‘complex’ baseline I can play is Burnin Love by Elvis, and I’m very proud of myself to see such progress. Thank you very much for this video!
This exercise is truly useful. I've been having problems with clear execution of couple of basslines recently, got fed up and put them on the back burner. Around the same time I started doing this drill and yesterday I came back to my nemesis basslines. Guess what? They sound much better now and I feel more control in both fretting and plucking hand. Amazing stuff Josh, I love your channel.
Bro I’ve been “playing” damn near 5 years on and off and this is kicking my ass. My hand is sore in muscles I haven’t felt in ages. I’ve much work to do. I been lacking so hard and this really makes it show
Played bass for 6 years as a teen, and played around with it once or so a month. I recently bought an acoustic bass and realised how sloppy my technique actually was. So I'm starting back at square one to get it perfect, and this is working out to be the PERFECT drill to get me on track. Thanks!
Started 3 days ago. And just found this and im glad to start trying to get this down and start with good habits :) The good side of youtube is very refreshing and im grateful for all who offer their knowledge to noobs like me :) (:
I'm a guitarist who has been contemplating getting my first bass for a while now. Josh's vids nudge me closer to pulling the trigger every day! Anyone else really keen to hear more of what he was playing in the first 6 seconds?
I recently got a bass ukulele. Bass ukulele teachers I've found so far suck. Mr Josh here speaks my language: "it'll take time; do this simple exercise which sounds nice and is satisfying to play for just 10 minutes a day [yeah? I keep losing hours doing this stuff!]." Thanks Josh, so glad I found you - thanks TH-cam algorithms! Within a couple of weeks, I've been recruited to a Uke band, and just from these lessons here in no order I'm making sense of it all - it's not quite intuitive yet, but hey, it's just been a month! - and they're happy with the bassline I've written for one of their songs.
This video uncovered bass tricks as the last one of all things on your channel! And it’s incredibly outstanding! Thanks a lot! You’re great!!!!! I think you’re GOAT-teacher!!!
Just gonna join my voice to the chorus of praise for this excellent bit of teaching! I’ve been a professional music educator for almost a decade and have experience on several instruments but am just starting on the bass (well, ukulele-bass - but it’s the same notes!). It was so great to find a video that has super practical stuff I can practice now as a beginner but that wasn’t also explaining what half-steps are ;) This was JUST what I’ve been looking for! And since I’m self-teaching with videos instead of taking lessons it’s great to know some bad habits to look out for and how to fix them. This video truly has so much wonderful content. And I enjoyed all the LOTR and bits of your personality that came through as well :) Bravo sir!!!!
You are so funny! The sense of humor in your videos is truly one-of-a-kind. I laugh out loud every time I watch them. Thank you so much for your amazing work and for creating such great lessons!
Noel Redding use the same cromatic bass lines in Hey Joe and that have inspire me since the 60-ties and I´m glad you show it again for bass players of today... I use to say: "Why use only 5 tones when you can use all 12?" Jaco Pastorius is my guiding star and I was going pro 1987, the year he passed away. Your channel is very entertaining! Bless You Bass Buzz!
this is a small gateway to the benefits of Beginner to Bada$$. Josh's explanation's are fantastic his delivery is great! and the course is very fun! if you enjoyed this consider his course I'm not kidding! Thanks Josh!
I’m a couple weeks into the Beginner course on BassBuzz, been enjoying it - this video with it’s effects and editing is next level. Going to start adding that to my day as soon as I have a talk with my fingers about listening…
Greetings from Australia Josh! Great video, I've 'played' guitar for many years, just started on bass again, your videos are so educational, informative, and inspirational can't wait to get back on the bass! Cheers Jon
My bad habit when I started was never using my pinky to reach that far note. But with practice and discipline, I can now play songs I never knew I could. Consistency and discipline will be your friends. Took me about 2 months to adjust to using my pinky.
Holy theory realisation BassMan!!!! Your PDF is actually taking us through the cycle of 4ths and 5ths !!!!! I'm astounded at the fact that I realised this, because I thought my grey matter was a little to old to learn and retain stuff. But hey guess what? it aint!!! Thanks for a great lesson Josh. Mucho appreciato.
This is great Josh! I’m still working on the Badass course but my job has increased my hours so I’ve not been able to play much in the past 3 months. I’ll start on this exercise this weekend and hopefully finally finish the course. You do a great job Josh as always. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with all us wanna be Steve Harris’ out here.
Josh, thank you for this simple lesson. I play Let's Go Crazy by Prince with musicians for years, I love the song but stressed because I want to play it correctly to get the groove. After this simple 10 minutes a daypractice the song is so easy now. It's surrounded by 5s. In my former life/work I would say Advanced is just the basics mastered. Thank you
This exercise has been a godsend. I barely spent a minute practicing it and my technique has already improved dramatically ripping out those bad habits like noxious weeds. Fookin byotiful.
Just as I thought to myself that it would be nice to find an exercise so I can try to get to where I was before I took a break. Perfect timing Josh (as expected from a bassist). Thanks!
Thank you so much for these introductory videos Josh! I really love your approach to teaching. You are not just showing the exercises but also constantly reaffirming beginners by telling them it's okay to microshift and to go slow in the beginning. This makes your lessons so much more motivating and beginner-friendly. I just got a bass for free off "Kleinanzeigen" (German craigslist) and I'm so happy that I found your videos because I feel like I have a good ressource for practicing now. I really really appreciate your work.
Josh, I LOVE YOU!!! Your videos are so useful and funny, I can't play my bass because of laughing!!!😂😂 And I'm a patreon because I want you to make such awesome lessons more often!!❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
It’s been awhile since I’ve watched your videos Josh, and I must say. WOW, the videography, editing and information has exponentially improved! Well done my friend! 👍🏼
I was so excited to find this exercise and then I realized it was for the base. I wish this was for the guitar, because you appear to be a very good teacher. :)
Most people DON'T like to be educated, they'd simply prefer to be entertained. You have somehow managed to do both! They come for the "show", but STAY for the expertise! Good job on this, I'll be watching...
You crack me up 😹 I followed right away, to learn the secrets only fire (practice) can reveal. I'm kind of a begginer, though I've been playing random stuff I like for like a year now. Time to start getting serious. Thanks for the lesson, sensei
Just beginning and I’m an old lady. But I can play guitar and sing so hopefully that will help make learning a little easier. Thanks Josh, good videos ❤
This is one of those videos that feels like it is going to be click bait… yet delivers on its promise. Thoroughly thought out exercise that packs in a huge amount of exercise elements!
Thanks so much, Josh. I've been watching you for a long time and you have a great delivery for a teacher. Flying fingers has been the bane of my playing since I was a guitarist. Great video as always.
I really like these bass lessons when what you are playing is put into a context. For example, what chord tones, key you're in, or scale notes you're playing. Thanks man. ,
Thanks for sharing this exercise! When I was learning piano as a child, I remember working through many exercise books to practice different finger movements. I've had trouble finding similar exercise books for bass, as everything seems more riff- and song-based. So this kind of thing is hugely helpful.
Listen man, I think those Lord of the Rings references are ace. That’s just my reaction. The way you tutor the viewer about walking patterns reminds me of an exchange I overheard between my mentor and one of his neighbors who was a renowned jazz French horn player. My mentor played jazz and symphonic upright bass. The French horn player said that he liked the way my mentor played walking lines, going so far as to say that some Berklee School of Music graduates he had acquainted with somehow couldn’t play a simple walking line. I didn’t go to that college myself, even though I have tried getting in. My education is at a community college. However, some alumni of that school who later became faculty members told me the best education they got was there at that community college, compared with prestige universities where they had done their graduate work.
No hobbits were harmed in the making of this bass lesson. 🧝
But are they taking the bassistis to Isengard?
🤣🤣😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Does it mean that this exercise is good also for players with short hands? Cool, I'll use it then.
regardless, practicing too fast is a pretty bad bass hobbit.
Seeing this comment right before watching the video is slightly worrying
Josh makes these kind of videos that gives you the urge to pick up your bass immediately and start playing. No showing off. No flexing. Just pure motivation. Thanks mate.

Yeah! I feel exactly the same!
Exactly what I thought before even watching.
I agree but it sucks for me because I usually watch them while I'm at work lmao
I'm watching this on a 4 hour train ride, now I really really can't wait to get home and play some bass 😂
When Josh says "it'll take a long time" to get rid of the flying fingers, take it to heart. I've been playing for years, but never really focused on economy of motion until recently. I've been focused on proper technique for about four months and I've improved but still am not to where I want to be. Facts.
Learning bass was a childhood dream of mine but my parents wouldn’t let me 😢
Just yesterday I realised, hey, I am 33, now I can learn it if I want! So I ordered stuff and I am looking forward learning with your videos ❤
Woow
Hell yeah dude
Same dream, same parents, started at 58.....
I started at around 46, I always thought bass players needed to have big hands and stuff. I've wanted to play since high school.

Such a brilliantly engaging teacher 👏 Starting with his B2B course was the best choice ever
Greetings from Australia Josh! Great video, I've 'played' guitar for many years, just started on bass again, your videos are so educational, informative, and inspirational can't wait to get back on the bass! Cheers Jon
The example that starts at 10:00 is awesome! I finally was able to understand "walking from one chord to the other". Thanks!
Justin's a BEAST on bass. Cool cameo to see!
🤘😻
Thanks bro ,,, I've been stuck on the second mistake of flying fingers,,, now at least I've gotten faster
This exercise completely unlocked bass practice for me! Thank you so much! I went from hardly touching my bass to practicing happily every day!
It’s been awhile since I’ve watched your videos Josh, and I must say. WOW, the videography, editing and information has exponentially improved! Well done my friend! 👍🏼
Thanks Darryl!
Great lesson, exactly what I needed as an excuse to grab the bass every morning. And there's even a slapping technique tip right at the end 😁.
This is the walking practice I didn't know I needed. Thanks for the informative and FUN lesson. 🔥🎸
This is seriously high quality education! I just finished a gig and I want to go practice already.
josh is a great teacher. oooh, he makes learnin fun
I appreciate the way you explain stuff. I've been struggling to find ppl who can explain well
I was so excited to find this exercise and then I realized it was for the base. I wish this was for the guitar, because you appear to be a very good teacher. :)
Most people DON'T like to be educated, they'd simply prefer to be entertained. You have somehow managed to do both! They come for the "show", but STAY for the expertise! Good job on this, I'll be watching...
Yeah, he has an addictive attitude. I'm getting a bass today!
Love your work , Josh!
I'm in
AK
Thank you bass buzz I will try to achieve this 💪
You crack me up 😹 I followed right away, to learn the secrets only fire (practice) can reveal. I'm kind of a begginer, though I've been playing random stuff I like for like a year now. Time to start getting serious. Thanks for the lesson, sensei
What a great video! I've been playing for a long, long time, and this is actually good advice. I'm going to start using this every day.
Just beginning and I’m an old lady. But I can play guitar and sing so hopefully that will help make learning a little easier. Thanks Josh, good videos ❤
*phew* NOW I know what to practice, thanks Josh! 🤘😻
This is one of those videos that feels like it is going to be click bait… yet delivers on its promise. Thoroughly thought out exercise that packs in a huge amount of exercise elements!
10m min practice in a 12min video. Well done ! :) (thanks, and keep up the good work!)
Thanks so much, Josh. I've been watching you for a long time and you have a great delivery for a teacher. Flying fingers has been the bane of my playing since I was a guitarist. Great video as always.
Nice little bit of info and great advice. The slap at the end was very funny. Thank goodness I had already subscribed....😆😆
From all the bass channels on the inter web. Yours stands head and shoulders above others. 👍
This is actually a very addictive exercise and I haven't actually watched the full video yet 👍 Love it 💜
Thanks I'm recently starting bass using my friends bass and your channel is helping a lot
I really need to practise the 1st exercise on my lessons with newby and beginner students. Thank you, brother! 💪
Very generous of you to make this video.
Havnt watched a video in a bit.. you been working out bro. Looking fresh. Another excellent installment in my education. Thanks so much bro!
I really like these bass lessons when what you are playing is put into a context. For example, what chord tones, key you're in, or scale notes you're playing. Thanks man. ,
Strong super mario mini game-vibes! Great exercise! Watched the video and went straight to my bass!
You're so great, man. Your videos are fun and informative. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!
Nice lesson and practice routine. And in leftward order of the cycle of fifths. Nice!
For those of us who went through your course, I can only say that I’m glad you finally got a base that has fret markers.
Thanks for sharing this exercise! When I was learning piano as a child, I remember working through many exercise books to practice different finger movements. I've had trouble finding similar exercise books for bass, as everything seems more riff- and song-based. So this kind of thing is hugely helpful.
Love your channel and great sense of humor.... Keeps me coming back for more!
I love your classes. I am using your classes to learn bass. I am thinking of subscribing to your badass.
