Don’t just write that and run away. Tell us why? I’m hoping it’s not because we tend to be bias and look at brand/company and price. I’ll be honest, after watching this I thought they were both great. One of my struggles is do I want my cables showing or not (back or front)

@@almas7123 Run away? I respond to nearly every comment, who's running away?
The SSL2 has more gain, more dynamic range, less noise, more I/O (connectivity), better gain display, two headphone outputs, and a blend knob. All of which the Scarlett 2i2 can't compete with.
It's a coin toss if you may prefer the Air over the 4k mode, though.

Just ordered the SSL+. Having the midi is a great option and one I hope to be using more often. The second headphone output is a game changer for me as this unit will be used for mobile recording. I loved your comparison of the "air" option versus the "4k" button, that was very helpful. The 4k seems much more useful to me as it is not "boomy" on the bottom end like the air sounds and it was much more subtle than the air effect. The 4K just made your voice sound a bit more "forward", which is good. Lastly, the difference in the noise at full gain is very obvious. My studio interface is an Apollo Twin, and those pres are super quite. I got the SSL2+ so I can retire the Apollo from the road, (which I have wanted to do for years), because I have never been comfortable taking that unit out of my studio. Thanks to SSL, I now have an interface that can give me mobile recordings that are comparable to the Apollo in a much more affordable piece of gear. Great video, thanks for putting it together.

What kind of music do you do? I got only praise from a small Afro-Cuban producer from Latin America for the SSL 2. I have a UR44, do you think it is worth the investment in pre-amp quality? I remember I got surprisingly good recordings out of a UR22 with some very cheap ribbon mikes, that needed a ton-load of amplification, so I guess steinbergs are not that bad either.

The things that made me want to upgrade to the SSL 2+ are the dual headphone inputs (can have closed back for rec, open back for production/mixing without getting side-eyed by the family) and the separate monitor/phones volume control. I hate having to reach over my 3' wide table to the back of my Kali's to switch them on or off.

Hello, i just starting watching your videos and you've helped me make a lot of decisions on items i want to buy. The question is, in one of your videos comparing the Scarlett and the Yamaha analog mixer, you replied in a comment saying "Solid state is more powerful pre-amp than Scarlett" and so i became interested in the Solid State over the Scarlett. But the problem i ran into is i would like an nondestructive interface but the solid state only has 2 XLR ins. Because i would like the option of 4 XLR ins, would you still recommend buying the Scarlett 4i4 although it doesn't have more powerful pre-amps. Any other options that don't totally break the bank? Thanks.

I just discovered your channel and appreciate your straight forward approach to gear comparisons, keep it up! If I could ask how does that Stereo button work on the SSL? Is that something that would help with mixing in mono or is it just meant for DJ situations?

    • @kettnercreative
      @kettnercreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The stereo button only changes how the monitoring works. In your headphones you can choose to have channel one in the left ear and channel two in the right ear. Or, you can choose to have both channels in both ears. This won't have any effect on what is being sent to the computer for recording.

Great video. Definitely like the ssl. For me, I’m getting ready to launch a bass guitar channel, and I need to be able to run a Shure beta 52a for vocal (cus I have one) and an am 57 to mic a cabinet simultaneously. The beta 52 requires phantom power and the sm 57 does not. The ssl feature of being able to do that in a simple way that I can understand (I’m an old guy 😂) is the major feature. Also the ssl just looks like a piece of audio gear that is familiar in layout.

the Air button on the Scarlett seems clean but not amplified so didn't alter the sound quality a noticeable amount as the "4k" button sounded like a "loudness" was added, adding more bass and treble.. I'm more impressed with the subtle improvement of the Scarlett Air option, however the duel adjustable headphones is what I was attracted to and purchased the SSL-2+

So the SSL has much lower noise floor with maximum gain and the 4K sounds great. Probably not for talking, but I could see myself using it with some instruments and especially singing. For me I think it's worth the extra 100€ (where I live). btw, It goes up to 11 because it's one louder.
Edit: I was almost going to buy this device, but then I stumbled upon Black Lion Audio Revolution 2x2 and even though it's over 400€ I had to stop myself from purchasing SSL2+. I looked up every imaginable comparison I was able to find and goddamn it blows pretty much everything away. It skips the RME and Apogee price range and goes straight up to Chandler and AMS level in terms of pre-amp and has the same quality DAC as RME and Apogee etc. Only downside is the 6ms round trip latency at 32 samples, but I can't see it affecting my playing or singing. The pre's demolish everything under 1500€.

Thank you for that great video, you have sold me on the SSL2+. I'm almost a complete noob to audio. My space is unfortunately not very acoustic and I cannot fix it for the time being at least. My setup is going to be an RE20 with the SSL2+ recording in a foamy isolation shield/ booth box type thing . My PC has very loud fans on it so I'm thinking about getting a dedicated mini PC from amazon for like $150 just for recording audio for my voice overs and then transferring the audio file onto my main PC and working with it there. Would recording on a mini PC with audacity and then transferring the file over to my main PC have any detrimental effects on my audio? As opposed to just directly recording on my main PC with the loud fans?

I like both devices better when you don't have the Air switch and the 4K witch engaged. The way I have my setup for live streaming is I have a Phonic Summit 16 channel digital mixer as my interface for my DAW so I can spice up my SM7b with some Slate Digital plugins and other processing then Instead of sending my control room left & right outputs to my monitor speakers. I send the left out into channel 1 and right out into channel 2 of my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. then in my streaming software I choose the Focusrite 2i2 as the interface for outputting my stereo DAW signal to the world. The 2 interface setup for streaming if you have a DAW with plugins is the only way to go. Before I had my setup this way I tried forever using Voice-Meter to get my plugins to be heard by my audience. Whoever made Voice-Meter really did a bad job at making the app self explanatory. Either way I could never get my DAW to output to my streaming software with Voice-Meter. The only problem with Voice-Meter is that it just doesn't work. The 2 interface setup is the only way to go.

Because I heard very good stuff about the SSL 2, but would like to see how it compares to what I already own before investing in a new sound card (particularly during these times where everything is at a stand-still for performing musicians like yours truly). I got good recordings from a UR22 under very complicated circumstances (cheap ribbon mikes that were really low output, and gain set up to maximum). I can post a link to it, it is somewhere on youtube (the violinist I was playing with posted).

Honestly, the difference in specs is negligible, and in most circumstances inaudible. Was there more noticable noise on the 2i2 when it was turned up? Not to my ears. And a fairer comparison build-wise would have been the SSL 2 (not the 2+), with the 2i2, as that also only has one headphone out and no midi in/out, and is also more similar price-wise. However - it does come down to sound. The 2i2 just sounds a bit brighter in my opinion. There's a bit more body to the sound on the SSL - so fair enough - slightly better pre-amps. But the added "analogue" texture buttons on both? I don't think they are really game changers given both units offer a very clean, noise free sound with plenty of gain from their mic inputs. I think the SSL is marketing itself as a standalone unit that sits well in a working studio full of equipment; the focusrite is almost half the size and weight - so is much more portable. This comparison didn't really take into account those factors.

I got the Focusrite, and I am hugely disapointed - the sound level (gain) gets lowered over 20 dB between what the Focusrite Driver shows, and what gets recorded in your DAW! Its horrible!
Turns out it is a problem with Windows, especially Windows 11, and I have contacted Focusrite directly, and they have zero solutions other than to work in your DAW to artificially raise the gain (and so far I have found no way to get that done without distorting the sound).
I will have to get a different interface....
Do any of you know if this happens with the SSL too?

Ssl 4K harm. dist. In low and lower mids and with the bosting around 8kh and dicret dot at the high top also boosted and dist. it ronds up the sound in to really nice US brodcast kind of flavor that we heard so often from back in the days in music, tv and movies. Listen to a singinc chorus on SSL with 4k. Scarlet by dist. slightely emphasise barely audible 40 up to 60Hz, also high fq, some mid high and it kind of harm dist. more of a mid range, but it also slightly brings the gain up, you can here it at 9 because the hf noise from 10 starts being audible when you turn the AIR on at 9 and saturation sounds like softube tube saturation. It sounds crispy and shimmery, prity nice also, it sounds like it opens up more tha ssl, but it's a trick, thats because it gains up slightly and it has more going on in mid and mid high.. bought are good. Watch the test with 500x AD conversion trough and back trough and you'll know why I like SSL.

not to be too nit picky, but u could've had that mic stand extended up higher / gotten the mic a bit closer to your mouth.

but on the other hand you have quite a loud voice, so... take my comment with a grain of salt!

@@kettnercreative hey thanks for response yeah its not bad, I have an SLMK3 running into a bunch of synths ( Pro One, A behringer TD3(303 clone), a Cat, Crave, Minilogue, and Finally the star of the show the Tr8, with the 7x7 package i think the Tr8 Aria will faaaar surpass the Tr8s, The Tr08 boutique, and obviously the Giant 3,000$ original 808. but with the Aria 7X7 one gets not only the standard 909 and 808s, that it comes with but 606, 505, 707, 727, and extra Drums for the 808 sets Very worth the 150$.
Anyway what impresses me about the SLMK3 by Novation is that it is standalone, needs to PC and I can Record * channels of Midi directly into its sequencer and then On the Fly- control up to 32 synths- including ALL PARAMTERS and it gives 8 lanes of automation which is cool. Yeah I picked up the Modular rig on accident Kind of. I was gonna get the RD6 to Match my Td3, and of course Behringer has people on hold, STILL ( I have built an entire modular box, without one single company complaining or putting me on hold... just saying) might be why there prices are nose diving. But yeah the Tr8 is back up around 450 at sweetwater again from 300$( thats what i bought it at). any who so yeah I press this Button on my Keyboard called ''In control'' and Novation was the first and dedicated Mapped Keyboard made for Ableton. so after one presses that button, one can either flesh out what one was doing externally or go all Daw.... They updated the firmware recently to include eight seperate arpegiators., Each channel has 8 'lanes' of automation. bigger than the keystep however wayyyyyyyyy more usefull. Having dedicated CV outs helps aswell./
