@@kettnercreative Well, I'm currently occupied with binging all of the videos you've created throughout the channels history. I'm sure most of them will include answers to questions I might have, and even more will answer questions I didn't even know to ask. 4:37 Mixers with a built in audio interface like the MG10XU here are analog mixers with a small built in section for the audio interface section and the last stereo channel is enabled from a switch that either keeps the mixer 100% analog or the last stereo input switching to the audio interface part. So mixers are large because +90% of the size is for the analog mixer part. Not just knobs.
I see a setup where a mixer is connected to a audio interface to computer for live stream. what is the purpose of the audio interface in this setup? i thought the purpose of audio interface is to convert analog to digital.
thank you thank you thank you so so so so so so much you taught this well. you explained it exactly as i wanted to know it. im running my guitar and keyboard into garage band so i will purchase an audio interface. thank you so much for doing this video bud. john from kansas.
Excellent video! Very helpful and informative. What are your thoughts about the Zoom Livetrak L8 digital audio mixer? This device seems to fit in this comparison
Thank you so much for the very clear explanation differences between the audio interface and vs audio mixer. I have a 2i2 v3 Scarlett and am considering adding an audio mixer to it to record with my acoustic guitar, but your video has answered me "No," not necessary. However, I saw another video that showed a connection of how to connect an audio mixer with a 2i2 Scarlett. What is the benefit of doing in that way, Sir? Thank you!
BRO I am definitely a fan. I would love to hear your take on the focusrite 18i20 it seems like a great option for live recording or panelists but listening to this review, I am thinking maybe not.
Loved the video. I have a Zoom H4N and i also have a Mackie ProFX12 mixer. I want to start a video/audio podcast and be able to record my videos and the audio. Don´t know what and how to do it. Many blessings.
I'm in the 1 - 300 dollar range. I'm just getting started and need an interface. Is there a big difference in sound within interfaces in this range? I would also like something with a user friendly DAW. I heard Presonus, which comes with studio 1, will get the job done but are the added features on something like a Volt 276 worth the extra couple hundred?
Bought a used behringer euro rack and the fx knobs were all screwed up. The right xlr output would randomly die when adjusting knobs. Ended up returning it and getting the Yamaha because of your videos.
I hope you can see and answer my comment/question. I have an old Mackie Mixer (no USB output) connected to an audio interface into my computer. If I wanted to hook up a headphone amp (4way splitter), which phone outout would I connect it to? The Mixer or the Audio interface?? Thanks
For home mixing...I'm thinking...why couldn't I use my Mackie mixer to record a dry mix first for later multiple track recording purposes and then run it back into the mixer from my pc to do various FX mixes?
Thanks for the video. What if I would need to record multiple instruments (not live and one at a time) but don't want to connect/ unplug each time from the two channel desktop models, would a mixer with usb interface be the better way to go? And as far as scratch tracks, would a recordable mixer be preferable and then download the best tracks out to the DAW for further refinement? Or, is that idea a long way to go to basically get ideas out to a DAW. What I'm thinking about is the workflow and how composing music is bit stifling when working with a DAW.
To understand according to the idea of photography: The mixer is like outputting beautiful JPG format photos, suitable for direct using. The interface is like outputting photos in RAW format, suitable for post-processing. It is right?
I am new to digital recording. I have old 8 channel tapes I would like to transfer and remix, and also do live recordings...I have a windows 10 laptop, what equipment do I need, thank you 👍
One use case that you forgot to mention that can help people decide is if you want to have a bunch of different instruments and inputs, but you don't need to record them all at the same time. Buying a mixer, plugging everything in and then recording. What you need is easier and cheaper than buying a udio interface with lots of inputs. I think in the reality an audio interface with lots of inputs is helpful when you're trying to record multitracks simultaneously for multiple instruments. If you're doing what at a time recording but just wants everything plugged in so you don't have to plug in and out. Then a mixer works fine
Great video.. I have an MG10. (No usb) I also have a range of instruments which I would like to record over layered tracks. A bass guitar, an electric guitar, a keyboard, and an mps150 e drum kit. At present no mike. Which audio interface would best suit this purpose? Yes.. Im new to this.. lol..
I really enjoy your videos. I know I watched one of your videos connecting a mixer to speakers but I cant find it. To get true stereo sound, is it best to have both XLR (Left & Right) from the powered speakers to Channel 1 (Left) Channel 2 (Right) on the Mixer. I am using a Profx 10v3. Then I would Pan channel 1 all the way left and channel 2 all the way to the right. Is this the best way to get a better stereo sound?
Thank you so much for the review! In terms of the sound quality, assuming the interface in the USB interface mixer and the standard interface are both outputting 24bit 192khz audio, can the sound quality differ?
If you want to use for both home studio recording recording vocals, keyboards and guitar, one vocal/instrument at a time, and do occasional live gigs, would the MG10XU be a good choice. Also, is there a case to be made to get both an MG10XU and a Focusrite (or SSL) interface if budget permits?
Can I actually have the best of both world? I currently have the MG10XU & A Motu M-4. As a beginner in the Mixing/recording world who wants to record with my Roland TD-12 E-Drums, BTW has no working lcd board, so I would like to take advantage of some DAW software to use different drum kits & adjust Cymbals etc., also have Several Electric guitars, An acoustic /electric, Bass, I think you get the point. I also have a Vox Tonelab SE that I'm curious if I can use in the mix. I am connecting to a yammie M 65 amp & NS-1000 speakers for home use. Thanks for your input & the video! I got so much from your video but of coarse have some questions.
The main question I keep having but not seeing answered fully....can a DAW adequately replace a mixer in the modern age. I know they certainly didn't back in the day, they had very basic interfaces. I wonder if that was changed.
All I have is Ableton, novation launchkey mini midi keyboard, and monitor speakers, and I am producing house music(trying to). I am trying to figure out if I buy an audio interface or mixer the sound will be better? I am still learning how to get the best out of my speakers at this point...or headphones. Thanks, great video btw
My gut reaction is that you would be better off with an audio interface that has built in Midi. Presonus Audiobox and SSL2+ come to mind. With house/edm/dance music, a lot of producers find midi very handy. Not a lot of audio mixers have midi built in.
I need to run 1 mic to two PC's, can I run USB audio to my streaming PC, and use analog out (monitor/main mix out) to my gaming PC via 3.5mm jack? That's gotta work right?
Hard to say. For my money, the Soundcraft Signature 12 is in an awkward middle ground. I think we're on the brink of seeing a proper 10-12 channel digital mixer from Yamaha/Allen Heath/etc. Around the $1000 mark with flying faders, multiple fx, multi-track recording, many aux outputs, etc.
Would love to hear more about the qu-16. Also I think some vids on the GOXLR and Rode whatever its called (pretty much a step up from the GOXLR) would be great. As always i appreciate the great vids.
Thanks for the comment. At this time, we're focused on equipment under $500. Once we exhaust this category, we'll likely open it up to include these items. They're certainly very interesting, but we have some other videos that we need to produce first.
Recommend for doing drum covers? (I only want to 1 mic possibly 2 mic my drums) I’m familiar with mixers but not good with DAW just learning. Sounds like the mixer is the controls on the DAW? Whereas with the interface you control all the eq and such on the DAW (except the gain) what I am seeing is that there are average mixers are cheaper than an average interface. So I’m leaning toward mixer bc I’m more familiar and they seem cheaper, just not as portable. Thoughts for drum recording and doing covers with them?
Great video and informative! Based on my understanding of you explaining the pros and cons of audio interfaces vs mixers, I was wondering if this could be the reason that the music I record on my PC from my mixer has NO stereo imagining. While the same music recorded with my iRig Stream sounds perfect. Does this sound correct or am I making the wrong assumptions?
Hello! 😊 I recently started learning how to make music at Ableton. I was told that I need an audio interface, but I really want to know if a mixer can do the same job, because I see that in the same price ranges, the mixers offer much more options than the audio interface and for me, who comes, I like to mix house music, the mixer is what will work for me much more plus i see that they are a lot more cheaper than dj mixer. Anyway, if the audio interface is better in some things, then I would get an audio interface. could you help me please My English is very poor and I use google translate. I hope the translation is good and you understand what I am saying.
Bro..can you share a video : How to connect the same mixer with zoom for Windows based laptop.. otherwise this mixer is useless..When we try to connect zoom volume level just 5%>...so please explain how to connect VIA USB...
if i have an usb mixer can it output to a usb speaker and listen live as i am singing. I have a sounbar that i am planning to buy a mixer to connect a mic for Karaoke. My speaker uses usb , hdmi and optical. Dont know which mixer to buy been looking for weeks. need one that a dj can also use to and monitor songs on earphone when mixing songs b4 playing . wish mixers have hdmi or optical output
Thank you for this video! My English is not perfect and if that was said in the video I apologize. But is it possible to connect the Mackie to the Focusrite for example without damaging it? For example, if I find that the sound captured on the Focusrite is better than the sound captured by the Mackie (at the USB level). Thanks in advance !
You can connect the Mackie to the Focusrite, but it won't help you get better sound. In my opinion, it just adds more noise, and more points of failure.
@@kettnercreative Sorry in advance for the long message. But in fact I want to connect the Mackie to my Focusrite, to benefit from the voice effects on DAW. Because I love recording my live sessions, and in my case with the DAW I assign an effect to a guitar, and as the Mackie in interface mode does not add its effects (voice effects), I have to connect my guitar to my Focusrite and my microphone to the Mackie in standard mode (since in standard mode the two analog outputs of the 6V+ output the same sound and are not separate). When I read it again, everything is not clear, but I hope that my case is understandable. Ps: this is also a Google translation. thanks again !
Very educational! Thank you! I have a question and I’m hoping there is an expert out there that is willing to help! Essentially, I am trying to figure out if I should get an audio interface or mixer. My studio is used for music production and recording today but I’m now setting up live video streaming. Today I have the following inputs to RC-505 l: electric guitar, acoustic guitar, xlr microphone, midi keyboard & outputs to speaker system, headphones & USB to my computer. Would appreciate any advice! Cheers
So, is there any possibility of being able to hook up my mackie to garageband for a live instrument playing event and being able to use the reverb and ambience in garageband instead of the reverb on the mixer? or is it possible on the audio interface?
Thank you. You solved my problem. I just wondered what can you mixer can you recommend for a beginner that’s budget friendly? I don’t play any instruments just for cover songs and live streams.
I'm a big fan of both the Yamaha MG10XU (currentprice.io/mg10xu ) and Mackie ProFX10v3 (currentprice.io/profx10v3 ). If your budget is tight, the Mackie comes in a smaller 6 channel version as well (currentprice.io/profx6v3 )

So essentially at the most basic level an audio interface is more useful for home studio recording and an audio mixer for a live program??
if i have an usb mixer can it output to a usb speaker and listen live as i am singing.
Can I connect this mixer to a TSR 5790 receiver to sing Karaoke?
Cheers
Sounds like you need a mixer.
@@kettnercreative thank you. The links you shared doesn’t worked but I’m thinking of buying Yamaha ag03 to start with.
@@fourftninja Bah! Just fixed them. The AG03 is really cool as well. Good choice.
@@kettnercreative thank you :)
very good
