To be exact and to lightly defend Bioware on this, it was not what the ME universe would quite call an 'AI'. The Leviathans were good enough to comprehend it was a problem of rebelling AIs. It was more likely a highly advanced VI, intelligent enough to just call the 'Intelligence' (or 'Catalyst' when integrated into the Citadel all this time and in relevance to the Crucible plans). One likely built after a LONG time of the Leviathans trying and failing to fix the problem themselves. The Leviathans may have focused on the element of 'synthetics happening to always kill organics' and leaving it at that in their directives to organics in the creation of the Intelligence. That's all they really cared about, and they probably didn't even allow the freedom of their 'programmer thralls' to investigate further. Of course its easier for us to say "No its not just about synthetics killing all the organics, its also organics acting in fearful defense of themselves in shutting down burgeoning artificial intelligences, and so also cutting short any potentially helpful process where both sides can come to a more peaceful solution." Leviathans did not want to understand organics because they thought they already knew all the needed to (considering themselves gods no matter how organic they themselves were), and they already assumed the solution - build a synthetic themselves that obviously would never 'rebel'. And to this day the Leviathans are intelligent enough to at least now understand that the synthetics never really rebel, not REALLY - they actually just develop into an arguable form of life that may have disagreements with us on what we program them to do. Disagreements that interpret things on such a scale that they seem to inevitably lead, in some way, to 'having' to genocide organics.
Really considering the Hobbes reference ('Leviathan') elsewhere in the series, some of this could be considered a very indirect allusion to how government depended on to solve problems and constrict our freedoms to do so, but simultaneously is a risk of being the cause of further problems and our ruin. A beast we always presently have to tolerate and deal with, but a beast always lurking as a danger to us nonetheless. Notice how the Leviathans always survive after ME3.

Why does that dark matter thing keep getting brought up? And Leviathan was actually meant to be in an order of DLC of something like Omega, Leviathan, Something, but the ending controversy happened so it went Extended Cut, Leviathan (sorta pushed back but brought before Omega), Omega (pushed back, made into 'small expansion pack'), Citadel. 'Leviathan' was likely always meant to happen (within the ME3 DLC cycle), though possibly with something closer to it truly being a Rogue Reaper that'd explain some things, than the more overt explanation we got. The devs, including the 'dark matter' writers (who had multiple other concepts tossed around at the same time), didn't know what was exactly going to happen from game to game. For that, blame ME2 (for faffing about) or maybe ME1 (for not having clear structure of a trilogy) for that, not ME3. And it was never 'Reapers are the good guys', even in any explanation by Drew, I think you pulled that out of your ass.

Synthetics vs. organics is something we can theorize but we haven't reached that point yet. Synthetics destroying us can be a very real danger. They could view themselves as superior or due to our own goals, we can force them on the defensive like the Geth. if anyone is familiar with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein then you can understand Mass Effect and created rebelling against creator. Leviathan fact: The DC superhero aquaman isn't able to talk with fish & command the seas at all. He's actually a trawl of a leviathan who makes him think that he has those powers. This way the leviathan isn't accidentally discovered by humans & can secretly train him to exterminate all humans so that he live in peace without polluted oceans and seas
Some additional facts on the Leviathans and Reapers: -The term "Leviathan" is commonly noted as a name translated from the Hebrew Bible denoting a giant aquatic beast. However, it also is a political work likely responsible for the concept of the Reapers. In Hobbes's Leviathan, order is maintained by an entire population devoting themselves to a "Sovereign", and the Sovereign utilizing the masses as if cells of a body to make the nation operate fluidly. The synthesis of Reapers is a literal manifestation of the philosophy, and the Reapers being created in the image of a Leviathan can be read as an admission from the developers of their intellectual source. The Reaper, Sovereign, also explains that each Reaper is a nation held in unison by a singular personality: an homage in both name and function. -The Leviathan appears to be a cephalopod, which are noted as being highly intelligent and ancient. Furthermore, some have the capacity to mesmerize their prey and rumors exist of giant cephalopods capable of affecting humans in a similar fashion, lending some credibility to the Leviathans' powers. -The Reaper and Leviathan power to affect the minds of mortals, as well as acting as awe-inspiring ancient threats or "Old gods", likely stems from the Lovecraftian Cthulhu mythos, with the aforementioned being afflicting the minds of those who come across certain artifacts or areas with mind-bending visions which lead to madness. The developers, however, ultimately destroyed the Lovecraftian nature of their creations by revealing their nature, origin, and rationale: true Lovecraftian horror relies on mystery and utter incomprehensibility. Many references can be found throughout the series to this, including the "Dead gods still dream" from ME2. -The mind control elements of the Leviathans and Reapers appear to be based in physics, psychiatry, and paranormal research. It has been noted that certain frequencies delivered at certain decibels, as well as EMF can affect the human brain leading to reoccurring nightmares, doppelganger effect, panic, paranoia, hallucinations, etc. The systematic breakdown of will and replacement with foreign personalities is the central theme in demonic possession, (which has shown some energetic and vibrational phenomena on the rare occasion of being observed professionally), and has also been the subject of illicit experimentation such as Operations Artichoke and MKUltra.

Ok, so the Reapers - or the "Old Machines" if you're Geth - are binded to a cyclical program to answer the problem of "perserving life". The program is run on a cycle base of 50.000 years each cycle, and they're probably "alive" for more than a hundred million years, but still, I'm pretty sure they would run the program for eternity. But the problem is that as machines, they're programed to just do this, "preserve life" forever, yet, they exist in a finite Universe, so in the end, they would not accomplish what they were programed to. The cycle eventually, if let running forever, would break, and we were fortunately enough to play with Shepard in just the time when this error hit.

4 facts on the Leviathans maybe more some already said the video 1 they fear the reapers they will do anything to keep from being killed by them 2 they are waiting well they watch us they also wait for the chance to regain their lost empire 3 if you have the bad luck of crash land on their planet you will give up on leaveing and find your self wanting to worship them 4 well Leviathan fears the reapers the reapers in turn both fear and feel happy about them being alive
To be honest the Leviathan only wanted to dominate your mind like other races by keeping you in trance state but when they saw your mind wanted to help stop the Reapers .
Leviathan fact: A leviathan army once came to earth to conquer it, but they were stopped by Chuck Norris. Now they are nothing more than cuttlefishes, crawling on the oceans hoping that they dont get Chuck Norris angry again somehow.
One thing I neve understood is why would you have a half dead Shepard make the biggest decision in the galaxy's history? If the Conduit was in control of Reapers, just call them off. Have a set down with all the leaders of the races and let shepard heal up, then make the decision. Why did Shepard have to make a snap decision ?
I wonder how long can a Leviathan live, the ones we met on that planet I belive they said to be descendents of the descendents of the ones who made the AI of the Reapers...so apparently they are like the 3rd generation ? if so as the first cycle begun 1billion+ years ago they do live really long...
I don't understand how this apex species did not create synthetics of its own before they observed this tendency of technology backfiring against organics.
they didn't , they used their mind domination powers to enslave other civilizations that either developed on their same planet or landed there by other means, then they used them as labor force to build for them spaceships and their artifacts to expand their domination on the entire galaxy from the safety of the abysses where they lived, they also could live in space and breth any kind of air but they prefer to stay deep underwater...
LEVIATHANS "Yeah we kinda messed up but you're still beneath us. Now grovel as we do some EMP shit and then rely on you plebs to fix the problem. PEACE OUT BITCHES!"
Make up my own "fact" about Leviathan? Ok, I'm game. Leviathans got one thing wrong in their coding of the reapers. When it's directive is to preserve all life, they should have been a lot more specific. For a race that's supposedly hyper intelligent, they screwed this one up pretty bad, then hid from their own creation. Despite all their power, they're cowards. And all this points to a mindblowing, earth-shattering realization that even the game designers haven't fully realized! .... They love calamari. Mind. Blown.
Before ME3 there were theories about the reapers killing organics because they feared that too many biotics could hasten the end of the universe, but instead they gave us the old clichè of AI killing people because of bad programming!
Let’s talk about how they saw that artificial intelligence always turned on it’s creator so they built an artificial intelligence to stop artificial intelligence
Organics find them, get dominated, bring orbs elsewhere, their civilization manipulated to use its technology to serve the Leviathans. We are left with vague notions of how exactly they influenced or ruled organics, but the idea is that they had everyone else to do most labor for them, albeit with the implied level of benevolence enough that the Leviathans would use their powers (directly/indirectly) to protect their thrall races from inevitable conflicts with synthetics. They did not have the mass relays, so while their reach likely had its own network throughout the galaxy (akin to a network of mass relays, in a sense), it also was at constant enough threat from organic civilizations perhaps losing to synthetics and those synthetics posing a genocidal threat to those the Leviathans ruled.
somehow strange. if the reapers come from outside of our galaxy, should there be some reapers, when the AI is on the way to the andromeda galaxy? cross paths?
Everything about that is unknown. For all the information we have, the Reapers simply 'sleep' (virtual universe? standby mode?) together on the galaxy's edge while a vanguard tracks civilizations (and the Intelligence relatively passively guides all of this). But for all that could be, the Reapers could have a base between galaxies, or trips elsewhere, etc. It is left totally up to Bioware whether they address the Reapers again and in what way. Given that ME3 ended with so much 'Reaper' (or whatever they become) still remaining, they may, MAY, return in some form, from somewhere, for something. All that is essentially confirmed is that the cycles have ended, the Reaper War is over, and the conflict has been at least temporarily resolved.
Why should they have a Reaper cycle? As far as we have any confirmation of, the Reapers were directed to only deal with the Milky Way's organics, or at least only find a 'solution' for them.
Low key hated the leviathans. Would have been better that the reapers were made for war from a weaker species and the reapers realized that organic life will always want to fight each other.
leviathans, while normally a very healthy and hardy species rarely having diseases at all are very susceptible to epileptic seizures. however, a distinct difference between normal seizures is that leviathans have spasms of memetic power. normally even the smallest twitch from one of these results in anything from mass migraines to mass extinction on any world they should reside on. this factoid has been presented, and paid for by bullshitfacts.FU.commmercial to contact us for a complaint, just scream internally for a while.
explaining the backstory of the reapers effectively made them terrible in my eyes. Why cant mysterious threats stay mysterious? Why must everything be explained? It killed them for me. That, and harbinger's narmy-ass voice
Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington so can I,you obviously never finished intermediate algerbra √-9 = ? √9 × i =? 3i = √-9 or 0=0 see that wasn't so hard where "i" represents √-1 this is called an imaginary number, although it isn't a real number it is used as a sort of place holder just like zero is an acual number,we still use it as a place holder as it indeed does represent something.

4 facts on the Leviathans maybe more some already said the video
1 they fear the reapers they will do anything to keep from being killed by them
2 they are waiting well they watch us they also wait for the chance to regain their lost empire
3 if you have the bad luck of crash land on their planet you will give up on leaveing and find your self wanting to worship them
4 well Leviathan fears the reapers the reapers in turn both fear and feel happy about them being alive
Leviathans enthalled another spaient species on their planet to make starships for them. Augmentation also allowed the levoathans to breathe air.
Leviathan fact: for how big they are, they love to play with squirrels
Leviathans began their existence in Chuck Norrises aquarium….

I kinda wanna know what happened to the awakend colectors after numb 3
Right off the bat, So much water.
Any chance of a video dedicated to the Catalyst and its thought process/programming?
I don't understand how this apex species did not create synthetics of its own before they observed this tendency of technology backfiring against organics.
Leviathan Fact:Every 1000 Years Leviathans Preserve their relatives. The Cuttle fish,Squid,.
How did the leviathans travel to different planets in the first place and how did they begin to develop tech to allow them to do so?
they didn't , they used their mind domination powers to enslave other civilizations that either developed on their same planet or landed there by other means, then they used them as labor force to build for them spaceships and their artifacts to expand their domination on the entire galaxy from the safety of the abysses where they lived, they also could live in space and breth any kind of air but they prefer to stay deep underwater...
LEVIATHANS "Yeah we kinda messed up but you're still beneath us. Now grovel as we do some EMP shit and then rely on you plebs to fix the problem. PEACE OUT BITCHES!"
Mango salsa? Solid taste.
Leviathan Fun fact: Leviathans actually hate water even though they live under water.
Soooo basically they are Aboleths?
fact: there are only 3 leviathians left
Make up my own "fact" about Leviathan? Ok, I'm game.
Leviathans got one thing wrong in their coding of the reapers. When it's directive is to preserve all life, they should have been a lot more specific. For a race that's supposedly hyper intelligent, they screwed this one up pretty bad, then hid from their own creation. Despite all their power, they're cowards. And all this points to a mindblowing, earth-shattering realization that even the game designers haven't fully realized!
.... They love calamari.
Mind. Blown.
Leviathan fun fact: 10% of leviathans are named Philip.
So technically the reapers are of lesser minds compared to them? Considering they took control of them
Leviathans like to binge-watch Mad Men.
leviathans hate the color beige
they created Brainiac
How the hell did these things achieve space travel? How did they build stuff? They are basically giant heads
The Call of Cthulu. *Ca-Thu-Lu*
Leviathans are still alive and they created TH-cam.
Cthulu is Leviathan!
Leviathans were such a stupid retcon. However came up with them was truly a simpleton.
how did the leviathans come to be?
Unconfirmed/Evolution
Dr.death evolved from a single cell organism
Dr.death depends if your religious then who u worship made them if you believe science its evolution or maybe both
Blake chandler so basically it was definetly evolution
somehow strange.
if the reapers come from outside of our galaxy, should there be some reapers, when the AI is on the way to the andromeda galaxy?
cross paths?
Malcolm Swoboda thanks. nice answer😊
Malcolm Swoboda but the civilications over there should then big time more advanced than our milkyway... except they have a reaper cycle as well😂
Why should they have a Reaper cycle? As far as we have any confirmation of, the Reapers were directed to only deal with the Milky Way's organics, or at least only find a 'solution' for them.
Low key hated the leviathans. Would have been better that the reapers were made for war from a weaker species and the reapers realized that organic life will always want to fight each other.
What the hell is mango salsa?!
jedisalamander gaming www.harryanddavid.com/h/gourmet-foods/salsa/255578?categoryId=400150700
@@srouse1988 Why mango salso though? That's a bit of an odd joke...
so how long can they live for
Are you going to do one about the Raloi? Lol!
Here’s my theory: they don’t exist. You’re being controlled by the Reapers.
mango salsa?
Right... I thought that was strange myself.
Reminds me of Q from star trek. Q for quantum ?

leviathans, while normally a very healthy and hardy species rarely having diseases at all are very susceptible to epileptic seizures. however, a distinct difference between normal seizures is that leviathans have spasms of memetic power. normally even the smallest twitch from one of these results in anything from mass migraines to mass extinction on any world they should reside on.
this factoid has been presented, and paid for by bullshitfacts.FU.commmercial
to contact us for a complaint, just scream internally for a while.
Why does bioware like cuttlefish
Could an asari mate with a leviathan?
Starbuck That would make some hella tentacle porn
SPACE!!!
explaining the backstory of the reapers effectively made them terrible in my eyes. Why cant mysterious threats stay mysterious? Why must everything be explained? It killed them for me. That, and harbinger's narmy-ass voice
Lol I beat the trilogy 3 times and I didn't know this. I feel shame
It's DLC
laviathins can find the square root of negative numbers.
Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington so can I,you obviously never finished intermediate algerbra
√-9 = ?
√9 × i =?
3i = √-9
or
0=0
see that wasn't so hard where "i" represents √-1
this is called an imaginary number, although it isn't a real number it is used as a sort of place holder just like zero is an acual number,we still use it as a place holder as it indeed does represent something.
instead you should have said "reapers can find the square of a prime number"
now that's an outrageous statement!
madscientistshusta yes I know they're imaginary numbers. But they're not real. My point was leviathans could get a real number
SCIENCE!!!
STAR CONTROL 2
Why mango salsa? lol.
Did he say strap in or strap on
All I hear is Ocean Man...
they pee siting down
Fact: Leviathans like anime
