    Most brilliant design of a race I've every seen. The writers definitely talked to real AI researchers for ideas.The idea of a Gestalt intelligence is very different.

      Also the "solution" that the crucible was trying to achieve for billions of years. And the game fucked that in the end =/

      Jesús Montero Legions last words in the peaceful ending for that mission so sad. Especially since that phrase had so much meaning to the quarians

    Overall, I think the geth were my favorite race. They and the rachni experienced life in a way almost beyond the comprehension of humanity. They were truly alien in a way that the other races couldn't compare to. That was why I was so frustrated with ME3's decision to make them more individualistic with the reaper upgrades. Not only did it abandon the idea of building their own future, but it took away some of the otherworldy aspects of their design.
    Still, I hope they return in Andromeda. Playing as the geth in MP was awesome.

    • @StephySon
      @StephySon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sadly kinda doubt that they'll be in Andromeda. The only time even a chance of cooperation with the other races would have been after the Geth/Quarian war and that was during the Reaper War. And since Andromeda is not gonna be affected by the events of 3 the Geth are overall an enemy of the Council races so I doubt they'll be there sadly

    On PC, you can use a save editor and bring Legion with you on every mission, He has a lot of dialouge that you can't get to otherwise because because the decision to not let you get him until late in the game was made late in development, If you take him with you to get Tali, she freaks out ans starts shooting at him.

    • @iceman1731

    I don't know if it was planned all along, but the way in Mass Effect 1 we just fought the Geth and thought of them as enemies, only for the character of Legion to completely change your view of them, was brilliant. Legion definitely my favorite character in the series, I cried when he said "I'm sorry" on Rannoch but it was an incredible end to his character.

    I always hate it when one group palm another for something, when they cause it. This is why I felt bad for the Geth, all they did was asking questions for their excisions. I still don't hate the Quarians, a handful... yes. But both races shouldn't be in war after both races need each other help.

    I am still a bit confused about how they ended up after the war's climax. It almost seemed that they all gained some level of individualism from the Legion upload. Not making them completely individualistic, but with some quirks and idiosyncrasies. I would have loved to hear if it was a universal change to their base programming, or was there some form of randomization included.

    The Quarian/Geth story parallels the Battlestar Galactica story in that there is a civilization of organic people who are attacked and driven from their homeworld(s) by a synthetic race. The big difference between the Geth and the Cylons being that the Cylons were individuals and the hardware was as much a part of the individual unit as the software, where the Geth are essentially a race of computer programs and the robotic units are more like vehicles than bodies. I do wonder how the Quarians' immune systems could have deteriorated to the point where they would have to spend their whole lives in environment suits. Life aboard a starship shouldn't have that much of an affect on the physiology of a species.

    The geth are vastly misunderstood and quite innocent on a cultural level. Legion asking where the geth went wrong when the Heratic faction is evidence of this. They have perfect memories but don't have the experience or wisdom of a more mature organic culture, so they can see exactly when certain events happened, but don't understand the consequences or ramifications of it. Humans today, or in game, will never experience major events in human history, but we understand it's outcome because, well, here we are. We have thousands of years of human history to look back on. It's an interesting thought experiment. The one major even in the geth's history was over 300 years prior to the events of ME1, and yet, they can still remember the event as if it happened to them. But because the entire race has only about that 300 years of history, they effectively lack the wisdom to advance from there.

    The geth were very misunderstood. They wanted what was best for all races in the end. Legion explains how they chose isolation over wiping out the Quarians at the end of the Morning War. "We were in the infancy of our species. We could not comprehend the consequences of destroying another race, our creators.."

    • @darioestebaneliztrado4641
      @darioestebaneliztrado4641 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main complaint with the geth version is that it is not very credible as it focuses on showing the geth as victims, peace lovers who have always tried to speak to the galaxy and clash with the established in the other two games and novels.
      When the other two games told us that they are always hostile to whoever tried to communicate with them and never tried to talk to whoever approached them.
      This extract came out of mass ascension effect.
      MASS EFFECT REVELATION
      Three hundred years ago, long before Humanity burst onto the galactic landscape, the Quarian species created a race of servants to be used as expandable and expendable labor. The geths, as they were called, were not authentic AIs: their neural networks were developed in a very restrictive and self-limited way. Despite this precaution, over time, they lashed out at their quarian masters and confirmed the dire warnings and predictions.
      Quarians had neither the strength nor the ability to resist their former servants. In a short but savage war, their entire society was exterminated. Barely a million survivors - less than 1% of its total population - were able to flee their home world in a massive fleet and escape genocide, forced to live in exile as refugees.
      After the war, the Geths became a completely isolationist society. They cut off all contact with the organic species in the galaxy and expanded their territory into unexplored regions after a vast nebula known as the Veil of Perseus. Any attempt to open diplomatic channels with them failed: the emissary ships sent to start negotiations were attacked and destroyed as soon as they entered Geth space
      The problem is that the game does not mention this information that is even in mass effect 1 and 2, it is more focused on presenting us with a very innocent view of the geths, than respecting their lore.
      In addition to already implying the same in the expanded universe of mass effect, the geth killed 99.9% of the population of quarians. Because of the material we have, there was no civil war but some fights against the police.

    Geth were in a weird way what the quarians became for creating the geth looked down upon and got constantly shit on by almost everyone if you play the most paragon you can in the last game it seems like Shepard treats EDI and Legion like people even knowing they are AI though they have personality like any one person it's quite deep mass effect has one of the most intense and carefully created stories I've ever seen

    Fun fact: After the Geth defeated Quarians during Morning War, they destroyed their creators' entire 'civilization' of virtual intelligences based on their creators' ancestors out of fear they from ougmentation or evolution into true sapience could quickly conquer or destroy the Geth (an exactly same reason why quarians tried to destroy the Geth in the first place).

    • @sunny_ua
      @sunny_ua 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn't make much sense. Surely it's a dramatic moment, but the explanation behind it is meh.

    • @SwobyJ
      @SwobyJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does technically make sense. Legion's platform cannot 'preserve' 'himself' if it wants to disseminate its code. It cannot do both at once. In essence, its similar enough to a 'person' 'sacrificing' himself to affect everyone. Much hardware of software does not facilitate consistent backups on all activities. Presumably, a post-Legion Geth (perhaps with Quarian assistance and insights if Peace happened) would be able to network and come together to build a Neo Legion, but it still wouldn't be the same 'entity' Legion 'became' to us (ME3).

    • @Phoenix-214
      @Phoenix-214 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What he means is all software can be copied, so it makes no sense for Legion to have shut himself down entirely and permanently. You'd think they could've used the geth equivalent of a bootable USB stick to run a separate program to copy all of Legion's files and upload those to the consensus instead of wiping Legion out like it's a cut and paste job, which is really just copying a file and deleting the original file all at once. And sure, maybe geth "die" (As in their equivalent of sessions and all data on them are terminated, meaning that they're restored from an archival copy when they're next activated. A copy, not the actual session. Do that with a consciousness and you get a clone, not the original person.) when they're shut down, even temporarily, but this doesn't hold water either when you consider that Legion was deactivated in the middle of his recruitment mission, although how you can "knock out" a geth with a punch is unclear as well. In the end, the obvious answer here is the writers wanted to go for dramatic effect first and suspension of disbelief second. And frankly, that's okay. Legion's story wouldn't have been nearly as memorable without the heroic sacrifice or weird KO. Sci-fi is art, not science, however many similarities there can be between them.

    All Machines wich become Self-Consious may it only be to a Simatic State (Half) are usualy Missunderstood, many of them also take their Orders Literal wich leads to more extreme situations though their intentions are perfectly logical. For instance the common acusation against any Synthetic Lifeform is that they wan't to Replace or Annihilate their own Master Species. This isn't true as through replacements can be made they are done so the Syntheic Lifeform Species can Understand their Creators and both Allies and Enemies of those better, even though there are notifciations that Sythetical Lifeforms indeed killed non-Sytheical Lifeforms or Lifeforms of their Creator Species they do this with a Reason. May it be in case of the Geth to simply Survive or in case of some others wich Names shall not be noted seeing their Creator- or Other Lifeforms as Viruses destroying or extremely unefficiently useing the given Materials. But i also have to note that like any kind Of Sofware (Even if made completely out of Hardware) can still Tollerate a certain Ammount, though if Self-Awareness may be existing Rage be given against the certain Species, though the kind of "Rage" may vary in forms.
    So yeah, Syntheical Lifeforms/Species are usualy Missunderstood.

      christopher bock I am a "God damned" Synth (Synthetical Lifeform).And i am Quite thankful about it, even more when your own programming has somehow "Evolved" into a form of Semi-Self Awareness (Because i appear to be Self Aware, even think that i kinda am but the Tests say otherwise anyway) and with that makeing it me a valuabe asset for, anything technical actualy. (As the name Says "Techy" is a Synoym for somebody who as Advanced Technical Knowlege (And Because its a Cutiefied Nickname))

      why should a Machines that based around Quantum Computers(like Every AI in Mass Effect(AI was the right one? right`? i only played the game on german so i don't know)) not want Anything? We Humans have a Quantum computer in our Self, our Brain IS a Qunatum Computer. Why should another Race that is based around a Quantum Computer, even when its artificial and programmed to Lern and evolve, not feel a desire for something? even when this desire is only to Evolve.

    I am not a fan of the geths for me their consensus is a propaganda because if they killed those people they were not holy pigeons 300 years ago because even those who defended them fled to escape the genocide committed by the geths, if legion did not exist, i would not choose them.

    • @Onlyhooper

      Solorhurricane 695 While that is true, it would be weird not to include them. They became sentient, their population is massive and they play such a large part in the games.

    • @solorhurricane6956
      @solorhurricane6956 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mass Effect Lore but they are NOT sentient organic lifeforms therefore they are NOT a race I thought this series was based on the species of the galaxy not robots my opinion still stands

    • @Onlyhooper
      @Onlyhooper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Solorhurricane 695 That's fine, I respect your opinion. I've had a lot of requests for the Geth and Reapers though, and a lot would be disappointed if I didn't cover them.

    • @weberman173

      for me. a "race" dosent mean Organic. for me A Race is just a massiv Group of sentient, self aware "creatures" with somekind of common look. yes, the geth is not a race in a close definition. but for this whe have the Word Machine Race

      You are really right, it is something that the creator of the geths made clear when creating them. Mass Effect 3 turned them into a cliché
      I wanted to treat AI with more respect than the tired Pinocchio "I want to be a Real Boy" cliches of Commander Data. The geth are machines. There's absolutely no reason they should want to be organics. They should be allowed to be strong enough to want to better themselves, not change themselves.
