I grew up with the classics like AoE and SC:BW, so it's definitely the traditional style RTS that incorporates both a hefty amount of micro and macro. I enjoy the multidimensional aspect of those games with some players being better at micro while others at macro, and the variety in gameplay that results from this discrepancy
I could say I use to always only enjoy the classic style and never really liked the idea of changing the core principles of the RTS. But I have to say more recently( on top of starting this channel) I have to appreciate some games that have the RTT and city building aspects. Thanks for commenting!
I love old school RTS games, where you build a base, gather resources in whatever form they come in, build a army (maybe even have heroes). I'm more into older style graphics games, where the newest style is something like SC2. The RTS has to have a campaign, as that's what i love playing in RTS games, with the special made maps with costume stuff and objectives. Sadly i have been all around and played / own pretty much all does games i like, so there is only new things to play and most does games are not my style off game. Like i don't like the total war franchise or a game like age of empires 4.
Wow we have a lot in common in terms how we like the RTS! Yea the single player campaigns is everything for me in an RTS even though it thrives on multiplayer. I just enjoy a good story and some cinematics. As for Age of Empires 4, it has to be the most disappointing RTS of the decade. Horrible pathfinding, not good visuals, boring campaign, nothing new that Age of Empires 2 definitive version could not to do better. I can honestly go on even more about that game. But as always thank you for being supportive of the channel!
I don't play that much rts but one of the most iconic aspects for me is the story, the two I like the most is W3 Campaign and CoH2, I also like the SC2 campaign but I never finished it, I should one day
i feel like this video has a bias that isn't great, claiming that city builders are for "more casual people" and that RTT are for "people who dread going back and forth" as if they're not competent or too intimidated by those aspects--where that's really not a great generalization to make. good video, but something to keep in mind.
For sure it's a generalization. I am not gonna claim that this %100 true. It is also through my experience and with friends that I talk and play with. And again its not to take away or belittle either side of the spectrum. You can still have a great game if most of the gameplay generally has a casual feel like that of the city buildings genre. Don't get me wrong their are times during city builders where you are stressed out and have to act quickly ( rebellions in seven kingdoms, natural disasters in Sim City, and starvation and freezing in Northgard). I also was not referring to people as being incompetent if they enjoy RTT where the back in forth is less or not present at all. In fact the AI of the enemy for RTT is harder because micromanagement is omitted. It does not have to with the player's competency level as you have to focus even more on your units. Thus still making you think hard as well. I hope this makes sense. But I am glad you still enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
One important aspect of the old games that now is lost is the art style that grew out of limitations of old, and limitation of todays world. I'd take 2d sprites and mocap sprites of old over almost any 3d garbage of today. Tiberian Sun, mwah, chefs kiss. There are some exceptions, but only because those games have SO MUCH other good things going for them. Like wc3 for example. Also despite having powerful pc I struggle playing strategies with modern engines. Compare AoW1/2 against 3/4. Newer games are a slow visual mess. Total War warhammers global map makes me want to puke. And so on, and so forth. Jagged alliance 2 vs modern xcom or jagged alliance 3 for example.
Yea the old 2D sprites just hit different, there so beautiful. You can tell the put in the detail when they draw them. Almost like the drew them by hand. Yea i find unit sprites on newer RTS are less detailed and just don't look good. Age of Empires 4 is a great example of this bad trend. Thanks for the comment!
Warcraft1 &2 were my jam . Absolutely loved them!
