I think most important is to balance the force that pulls the knot to opposite sides, if it is too strong, no matter what you do, the knot will fall apart. There should be no stretching in the fabric, all movements should be very slow and you should stop and start simulation constantly.

how do you stop the knot from ripping through itself and undoing? i tried doing this but my knots when pulled tight pull through itself.
