We raised our 4 kids in a town that has a huge lake. So swimming lessons are very important. I found that many of their school friends quit lesson once they could tread water in the deep end and started to the learn front crawl. I found that children would also be failing this class because the front crawl is more difficult, which is probably why so many kids quit their lessons. There is a false sense of capability levels given to people who can handle the deep end of a swimming pool. We would take our family into BC camping, and to mountain valley's with large lakes with tall rocky mountain cliffs. The older kids loved to jump off them into the water below. The waves on large lakes are hard for even the strongest swimmer. Even though my older kids had already completed all the swim levels, I still watch them like a hawk. As for my youngest, he had to stay in a life jacket when we'd take the older ones to the lake. He was even jumping off the cliffs too at age 4. Life jacket on all the time of course, even to play in the sand. We would go with friends so we had 7 kids altogether, and keeping tabs on younger ones can be distracted. So both my boys had to wear a life jacket at all times when they were little. Children and water is very scary, and having them get to the point of being experienced and strong swimmers helps moms be not so stressed out. Just a little. My 25 year old is in Nova Scotia right now and just sent me photos of the ocean and beach that he's at. And of course, my protective instincts kicked in. I reminded him that it's an ocean with currents. He's a prairie boy and not used to swimming in the ocean. Don't let your kids quit their lessons even when they get hard. Lakes are not like swimming pools and oceans are not like lakes.

100% The best lessons and life skill you could ever invest in. My mom couldn't swim but she insisted my brother and I went all the way through swim classes, beginner to lifesaving. No quitting, it wasn't an option. I grew up in Michigan where so many of us live right on the lake. Now when I travel to the ocean with the family I am confident but also really respectful of that water. I never worry about sharks because I am too concerned with making sure we all safe in the waves and currents, lol.

My husband is a prairie boy who grew up on the lovely calm and shallow Lake Winnipeg. I remind him all the time “that’s a river” “ that’s the ocean” “that may be a lake but look at those waves from the valley wind!” I taught him a lot about “lazy swimming” how to be more efficient and how to float as a muscular person. And we always have all our safety gear :)

I agree completely. We live on a lake and all of my kids learned to swim at a young age but then I signed them up for the local swim teams in summer. There they learned all the strokes and did them everyday. It was every weekday from about 8 to 11 and sometimes some local meets. The coaches were great and practices intensive. By the end of the summer my two oldest swam better than I ever did and the youngest wasn't far behind. We did this for about three years. I did still worry when we went to the ocean each summer. I grew up knowing the waves and tides, learned to swim in the ocean, they hadn't. Despite the fact that by then they were better swimmers than I was I still watched them like an eagle when they were in the water, ready to run in st the drop of a hat. They were teenagers by then and really didn't appreciate my concern but they did listen when I went in and checked the undertow, the current, where it was pulling, etc. It's fun watching them now teaching their kids to swim. This was the first year of swim lessons. I just bit my tongue and enjoyed.

Absolutely! Our school had an indoor pool and we were all required to take swim lessons from 4th - 12th grade. We lived in the Finger Lakes district and we often went to the various lakes and even spent a lot of time visiting the various Great Lakes (which, as you know, act more like seas with tides and ravaging winter storms) so we were always swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, boating, fishing, you name it, we were on the water doing it! The very first and most important lesson is to respect the water.
You are a very good and protective mother and it sounds like you aren’t overly protective, just as needed. God bless you and yours!

Something I like to do with my basil in the summer is make pesto and then freeze it into cubes to use all year long! Sometimes I'll add a cube or two some marinara, or make a creamy pesto sauce for pasta, or add it to pizza. It's just so delicious and nice to have on hand! Another way we save basil is stack several leaves on top of each other, roll them up and then wrap in foil, place in container or bag and freeze. Then all you have to do is get one out, unwrap and chiffonade (while frozen) and add it to eggs or sauce, etc!

@@joymorrison6614 I work from home and did not homeschool until I had to for the past year and some months. I am extremely organized and all in the household know that I earn a living, too, and they have jobs to do. But, there are so many wild cards in her existence, like the days they lost tending to the damage and mess from that 100-yr. storm and I suppose her children are outside a lot of the time with safe spaces to roam. But, I'd have to see a real DITL to figure out what she does with the suddenly hurt child or sick cow and such because it is also a small house, though gorgeous. One cannot follow through easily with plans and that many people and a husband who's busy out and about on the farm. We do not by any means have chaos and disruption all the time, but it's hard work.

    • @philippapay4352

@@lynnnelson6689 I am organized and so is my family because I work from home. But she is in a small space with a lot of people who are all around all the time since they all work and school on the premises. I work from home, so we are rather more organized than most households. But with that many people, she may be the General Patton of the farm mothers. We also do not have livestock and crops on anything like their numbers.

@@philippapay4352 I understand but if you saw her Q&A video recently, she explains she has help - a lot of help. This comment was not personal rather in general. I think if people would watch TV less, Facebook less and let's say, less on social media, they would have more time. That does not mean you, okay. Take care and remember we are all individuals, some can accomplish more than others and no need to feel guilty.

Pretty much anything creative and running a family takes a lot of time and koodos to you for all you accomplish!

Lisa, that was so insightful and informative. I'm totally in awe of you. I, too, have six children,(in 10 years), and love seeing your passion for your family and also your job. I'm a passionate cook at home, and previously at work, and I totally understand the work involved. Absolutely love watching, don't ever stop! You're killing it! Lots of love from Australia xxx

I am really enjoying your channel and am watching and learning different ways to use my six year old sourdough starter. You have a lovely family. Thank you!

Wowza this was cool to see. You’re right I had no idea how much work your job is! You make it look easy, but I see it takes a while to get such a professional finished product. Thank you for sharing this with us. I found your blog and channel while working nights as a RN (private duty nursing, so I’d watch while my patient slept) and continue to enjoy your blog and videos now as a mostly at home mom. It’s my “me time.”

Whew! I need to sit down and rest a while! You are one busy lady! Have you ever had a person ask you when you say you’re a stay at home working mom what you do all day??? Does that person’s face be like 😳? You’re amazing! Me? I have to get my grandson to show me TikTok on my phone! 🤦🏻‍♀️ So glad that TH-camrs like you are so tech savvy and willing to share that with other entrepreneurs just starting. What a blessing! 🙌🏻 I like learning recipes, etc., and seeing videos of kids swimming, playing, milking cows (you go Joanna!) and all things farm! You have such a eclectic channel that offers something for anyone! Can’t wait to try that soup recipe! Tomatoes are coming in by the truckloads! 🍅🍅🍅🥰

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video! Loved hearing about and seeing the practical sides of your work/life balance. My favorite videos you create are What We Eat in A Day/Week. But this type of video is right up there with them!

Geez Lisa, I don't know how you manage it all! It's crazy to me, that in the midst of showing us all the reality of just how much work really goes into all that you do, you STILL seem to exude a pretty calm and capable air about it. You are truly blessed. You are such a terrific example of so many great qualities aside from the ones you showcase like the gardening, cooking, sewing etc. Your "uncelebrated" skills like organization, planning, work ethic, parenting, and just "get er done" attitude is truly inspirational. And you do it all with a huge amount of grace. I've said it before but it bears repeating. You're an inspiration. Your partnership with your husband, in doing all of these things for the betterment of your home, family, children, and quality of life will have such a lasting impact on them. Thank you as always for sharing all that you do. You really do us a service in sharing all that you do. I hope you're feeling well, you look beautiful by the way! Love from Montana!

Just found your channel. Wow, good job, Mama! I have a little farm and a first little one on the way (very soon!) I’ve been overwhelmed and tired this whole summer and couldn’t keep up with our large garden & many other homestead plans. You’re on a whole other level with that awesome, large family! I take it as a boost of inspiration! If you can do all that, I can (take a nap) and then do my work too!
Wishing you God’s blessings and continued success.

Gazpacho would take care of all of those extra veggies that you named, but in one recipe. Plus it’s so refreshing during the summer since it’s generally served chilled. Love your videos, btw.
