    Man, I stirred up the hive! 😅 Let's cover a couple things that have come up in the comments.
    The critical flaw is not how wide the lens is but the fact it's not easy to replace. Since this is an action camera, it's going to be put in some pretty gnarly situations. I've already damaged a couple GoPro lenses since the start of this channel, and know a few people who have shattered the lens on their GoPro. The Lens cover is great for minor drops and scratches, but a solid hit will take out the lens cover and the lens under it.
    Many people pointed out that they use this camera for non-action or POV filming and love the more narrow lens. I totally get that and if the lens was easy to swap out it'd be far less of an issue because someone could install a wider lens if wanted. Having a narrow lens on the Osmo means that many are still slaves to GoPro if you need a wide FOV to capture all the action. It's kinda frustrating for the action sports users to be told, "Well, it's perfect for me. If you don't like it, use something else!" When we really only have one other option that isn't perfect to start with (GoPro). 🙁 Meanwhile, there are so many great options for travel/Vlog filming like the Osmo Pocket that has a built in gimbal, the Sony RX100 that has OIS and much greater recording options, or even the RX0 II that has a killer 1" sensor and connectivity all contained in a rugged package.
    A lot of people mentioned the idea of a kit of interchangeable lenses. That would be awesome! It for sure make everyone happy because you could have a narrow low distortion lens for a cinematic shot, and then a wide lens for wide shots or POV filming. Plus, easy to replace damaged lenses!

      There is a figure of speech that follows: "Leave Well Enough Alone".
      I believe that is very Fitting (cough) in your video.
      I too, have the same Ifixit kit. I used it to upgrade my Mavic Pro (standard) antennae system. It was a disaster as reception and transmission were faulty, although I took my time with the upgrade. I eventually replaced the entire remote control unit because I could barely travel a few hundred feet.
      Cheers...

      The lens can be easily removed with a little heat. But this lens uses a different (smaller dia) thread than the usual lenses of this type, so I haven't found any third party lens that will fit. I would really like to fit a lens that gives around 24-25mm FOV instead of this super wide angle.
      Here's a comparison, original lens to the left: upload.zufall.nu/IMG_5947.jpg
      So technically it can be replaced kind of easy, if the replacement is identical.

      @AntiVaganza 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is late, but here's the curveball... DJI says this is a 145 degree lens already which is very wide indeed and some say GoPro is "just" 123 degrees. So, unless the specs they claimed are wrong, then perhaps you need to petition them for a FW upgrade enabling the full FOV of the lens. And then work down from there with Lens Correction and EIS.

      although i get your point, most companies don't make product so you can swap out internal stuffs and not upgrade. look at apple products people still buy them as they keep making it more difficult to swap stuffs. dji in the first osmo pocket, used a narrow field of view, and pocket 2 they made it wider. thats their policy to make the next products better, its most tech companies policy otherwise theyd be out of business, incremental upgrades. i was hoping it would be possible for other companies to make a wide angle external lens like the go pro max lens mod. but it seems its not possible or no company thought to do it. in anyway, i got the osmo action recently at less than $200 so its a great deal. maybe not so much for you who bought it at the release price of about $350. for it field of view it fit perfectly for casual vloggers and casual action people, not extreme action people.

    I was filming the underside of a passing train yesterday and a hanging cable hit the lens of my Hero 7 silver (stop laughing, it was cheap) and the lens was saved by a lens protector like the ones used on cell phone screens. It was a direct hit on the lens and the protective layer cracked but the lens was unharmed. I was shocked and immediately installed a new one. I can’t imagine even trying to open it up. The lens on the Osmo Action is so much better for many things, budget commercial work etc where fisheye is a nono , but most use cases for such a camera is for the hobbyists who wants a wide fisheye. And the non replaceable lens is very concerning in regards to cost or time lost(insurance)
    They should have made it repleaceable/easily swappable, and they could potentially made even more money. Beeing able to buy " a kit of 3 lenses fisheye/wide/less wide" would have been great.

      I guess my question for those people is, why not get the RX0 mk ii instead of the Osmo? You get a 1" sensor, more dynamic range, better lowlight, better inputs, and color science. Yes it's kinda crappy you have to add in stabilization after the fact, but it's almost perfect otherwise. And if you just want to vlog, a RX100 is a great do it all camera.

    Let's not make fun of that thermal sink knowing the unreliability of GoPro in that regard. Recently I used GoPro Hero 7 black as a dash cam and it turned off more times that I can remember. I cannot imagine the GoPro performing in a hot dessert.
    This being said, I finally decided and ordered a DJI Osmo Action camera as the price is more decent now.

  • @Totustuus2022
    @Totustuus2022 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video! I am totally amazed how so many people here complain about the wider distorted image in the GoPro 7 Black when you can actually change one setup in your GoPro and have a DJI Osmo Action screen size without distorsion. Too many people buy stuff and never learn to use it to the full potential.
    And if you missed the setup in the GoPro where you can do this, you still are able to fix it in post.
    I do believe the critical flaw on the DJA Osmo Action is twofold: the stupid lag time when you video recording is a deal breaker for me as well as not being able to plug in an external mic without any sort of stupid adaptor like the Osmopocket.

  • @checkeredflagfilms
    @checkeredflagfilms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    good review/breakdown. admire your dexterity and willingness to dig in. personally, I don't think DJI will do anything to solve the problem. as you know, rocksteady crops (punches in) the image rather excessively but that's why their stabilization exceeds the GoPro. (at least in some comparisons) Turn it off/on and you can see the difference. With it off sort of defeats the purpose of the platform doesn't it. Even post stabilizing crops an image. But if you just using it to capture still images and/or locked off or even ninja walking...turning off RS might be ok in some cases. The big thing missing imo...is the external mic adapter!

I guess the real question is, is the GoPro still wider angle in 4:3 or are they both about the same at that point?

    I love how meticulous you are with your videos. They're top shelf! I always look forward to the notifications from your channel. I was optimistic, until you started peeling back those ribbons, and I thought..."Oh man, I sort of hope this doesn't work, because if this is the answer, I'm screwed. NO WAY I can possibly do that and have it ever work again!" Thanks for at least trying to find the "answer" to what all the POV MTB'ers are looking for. I'm happy with the results of the pure POV footage from the 7, mounted upside down on my chin bar. For "off the bike" footage, if I don't keep my head perfectly still, any panning motion just looks like trash with how the GoPro crops the image for Hypersmooth. I tried to use it at a recent heckling event, and 2 minutes into watching the footage back, I just deleted it. Worthless.
    I just have to hope they are working to perfect it, and not resting on their laurels to release the Hero 8 in silver, that doesn't offer anything signiicant, like the 5 to 6, which were both worse than the 4. :-(

      It's a complete rip out and will 100% damage the existing LCD panel (assuming it's not already broken).

  • @frankluo230

    For vlogging and storytelling you need a more normal view not wider. For extreme sports, go pro is just fine. The problem is, extreme sports is a dead market, everyone in it has got a GoPro and aren't gonna replace it soon enough to make gopro profitable, let alone a new comer. For much wider audience, recording day to day activities with great stabilisation and weather proofing are more important. DJI action chose to cut a slice from this section of market. Bingo DJI, next up, an osmo Action pro for swappable lens, bigger battery, better armor for an extra $100.

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're doing vlogging and storytelling, why not get the RX100? It's a proven platform that offers everything you need (minus a microphone jack... Come on, Sony...).
      I would argue the action category is not dead, If anything that entire market is waiting for a good replacement. Many of us mountain bike TH-camrs have been reluctantly holding on to our hero 4 blacks and gimbals because nothing has been able to beat it for video and audio quality. The only reason some of us switched over to the hero 7 was because it offered just good enough audio plus built-in stabilization that we could ditch our gimbals for the first time. If anything, I that's why we need some solid competition against GoPro; they've had no reason to innovate other than hope people upgrade. The last time they were hungry to prove themselves was when they created the hero 4 black. That was a really high bar that has only recently just started to get moved.

    • @frankluo230
      @frankluo230 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrailFeatures exactly proved my point that hardcore sports people aren't upgrading frequently. For DJI entering a competitive market with an existing dominating player Go pro, they decided to take a slight different angle or approach, to me at least, is more appealing to most of normal users. Btw, not everyone wants to carry RX100 with gimbal for vlogging. In Asian countries like China, less than 1% vlogging contents on popular platform feature extreme sports.

    it is true also the contrary for instance I have firefly 8se and it has 90 degree lens and I bought it quiete for this reason because I did't want a wider one so it is time the action camera will have but if you want 170 degree Firefly have this option too and it works great with an external mic . Best option for the future action camera market is , interchangeable lenses without having to disassemble them or the whole camera , but as we regularly do with reflexes and I mean screw unscrew the lens , that is, change and that's enough, this is the challenge of the market of the future and then also the hole for the addition of a normal 3.5 mm external microphone this is what the market demands I repeat the possibility of changing objectives and hole 3.5 for external microphone and then with the possibility of having the opportunity to change lenses - the action cam factories will have even more revenue determined by us that we buy even more different lenses as we need but is it so difficult to give in practice this ? or as usual Chinese engineers are a little late in mind sharpness.

      Trail Features true, but how many times have you broken a lens? It does have a protector lens anyway and that’s easy to replace. I personally hate the barrel effect of GoPros and pleased they’ve made later models less fish eye.

    What bugs me about your title (probably click bait) is it's not a critical flaw, it's a benefit and the very reason I went with the Action vs. Hero 7. The Hero7 is simply too wide to be usable. It's too fish-eye. That's the very reason I purchased and am pleased with the Action. Too bad you can't put a longer lens on the Hero7.

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The critical flaw is actually the fact you can't easily replace the lens. For me that's a waaaaay bigger issue because it affects everyone. I'd be happy just swap the lens to my needs but the crazy amount of epoxy makes that very difficult. 😔

    I cant believe they have such a modular design like that and then say lets epoxy the eff out of the lens heck if they were smart they would sell a lens module with a wide angle lens. Now that you have the Ifixit kit you need to get (if you havent already done so) the magnetic parts mat. Great for separating small pieces especially since you do a lot of these "tear downs" I use it in my non biking life for my small electronics repair all the time.

    1. I bought two GoPro Hero 7 blacks in 2019. One doesn't work anymore & the other one is extremely unreliable
    2. I bought two GoPro Hero 8's in 2022. One now consistently cycles on and off
    The second one turns off within 15 seconds . Neither one is usable anymore
    3. I bought a 3rd GoPro Hero 8 in 2023. It now turns off within seconds after I push the on button it is not usable either
    4. All five of these GoPro have had issues with heat, inconsistent recording, & corrupting files.
    5. There is always a daily frustrating issues every time I use the GoPros
