When I was on summer break as a child I remember my parents taking me back to Vietnam for the summer. And they would put Journey to the west on tv and our neighbors would all gather around the tv to watch it together. The fact that they used the theme song from that series fills me with memories of a simpler time.
I think the logical approach would be the same game developers make the game starring the same Erlang Shen as Wukong. Even then, it likely wont be as popular as Wukong, just because Wukong's story and his abilities is perfect match to be a game character.
