Well, it's on top tier levels. Every character in this episode had substance. Even the cameos of people dancing, children running around, who ends up dead or as survivors who has to deal with their friends' demise was a stark juxtaposition and serves well to the story. That reminds us that genocide is inhumane and there is no justification of killing kids and innocent civilians.
My wife entered the room as the finale of the episode was happening, right as Gambit said his catch phrase. I'm 30 and this show was my childhood. She asked why I looked horrified and I couldn't even answer. This episode started peaceful, intriguing and down the path of love hoping to give us fans the answer to the greatest Marvel relationship, Rogue and Gambit just for it to turn into a massacre and almost kill 2 iconic characters and succeed in the third. After Storm being "cured", Cyclops and Jean falling apart, Jean and Wolverine having a moment and then all this.. I was shocked immediately and I was in shock for hours after. My name is Arkangel Gaming and I am not okay.
This episode made me cry real tears. I loved how rogue is touching him and says she can't feel him, meaning she always felt him without having to touch him 😢...
You light up everything you touch but never me. The writing is so good on this show. I wager that fool will break your heart in two, Gambit always know the odds is that it. Your heart may beat for me but I can't feel it. So much emotion in this scene it made me tear up and I'm someone who rarely cries for whatever reason.
Also during her dance with Magneto the two points that she looks the happiest are the kiss and the moment when he turns her around and his hand goes over her breast. In both of these cases Rogue's eyes are closed and she's smiling or facing away from him. When she opens her eyes her eyes have a noticeable sadness to them which leads to her realizing that Remy was right. It's almost as though in those eyes closed moments she was picturing Remy.
Kind of random, but I've always liked Star-Lord's line from "Infinity War": "Did we just lose...?" Absolutely, to respond to accusations of being a terrorist leader with “well all your leaders are terrorists” was hard af, such good writing in this episode
So we all know Cable’s probably gonna rewind time and have a do-over, but I hope that don’t take away from how BOSS Gambit’s exit was. Magneto & the Morlocks’ exit was also amazing and emotional. Absolutely brilliant choice to have no music underneath that entire finale & its epic sound design. The X-Men have finally arrived to save the floundering MCU, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
i really want gambit to live but i absolutely HATE when shows just hit the undo button. i hated endgame for that exact reason. It was more interesting to see how theyd play with a new cast than to undo everything. They should at least play it out like this for awhile.
@@jujijumanvery true, but with end game it was a given non of the snapped star studded cast was gonna stay long, more a kin to days of future past. Completely undo everything the past 90 minutes and erase everyone's memories like it never happened, bro why even watch a movie at that point if you're gonna undo everything.
Part of me wonders if maybe they showed Cable to suggest it CAN'T be undone. Like they might have some timey whimey "I can't cross my own timeline" shenanigans to suggest that he can't just constantly redo everything. If he could, nothing would ever have any stakes.
@@TNEQL the watcher was there. this is a significant moment in time for that world. cable can try but, as loki explained, it will only branch into a new variant. this event happened. if they undo it, it becomes narratively unfulfilling
Something else I started thinking about was Magneto's comment to Gambit in the Blackbird early in this episode about him being the one who wouldn't survive the fall if their plane crashed again. Even tho he'd be present with two flyers trying to, neither would be able to save him in the end. None of us are ok.
this comment right here doesnt have the amount of attention that it should... they spoil the end in a random conversation without ruinning anything... what an episode
@@pablosaglimbeni What an episode is right. I stayed up until Wednesday morning to basically see it soon enough to avoid spoilers. That little joke went over my head completely until the next day, and you're right. They spoiled the end right from the start and none of us saw it coming.
So glad to see gambit finally flex his powers to his full potential its such an interesting power set ,and he's always held himself back so seeing him go all out like that was so satisfying.
Looking back, the creepy lullaby in Jean/Madyline's vision is just the introduction to "Happy Nation", which is played during Rogue/Magneto's dance. Neat detail that would have been hard to pick out until the song showed up in that moment. Jean's vision foreshadowed Genosha, and that song was a part of the lead up to the Genosha massacre.
Glad I discovered you, man! I love the way YOU break it all down for us, connecting the dots, revealing things we might have missed. That's the kind of recap/review I personally like. Yes, I will definitely be looking at your recaps in the future.👍
the fact that it took me this long until a Marvel animated show to make me feel something in a Marvel project blows my mind. what a greatly written episode
This is the most surprising Marvel death ever. Considering it’s a ten episode series- and has episodes like four which are basically a normal cartoon- and that it’s a continuation of a 5 season series- I didn’t think any main characters would die, especially in the middle of a season. I genuinely thought it was impossible for any of them to die. I will REMEMBER IT indeed
The line from magneto on having no regrets about saving more people… given the many concentration camp imagery, could it be referring to a similar scene from Schlinder’s list, with the protagonist lamenting that he could have saved more
I am glad I was alone, not sure my wife would have understood.... of course I am still apologising for making her sit through X-Men: The Last Stand... so she might just see it as revenge
This episode was one of the greatest episode of tv/streaming I've ever seen. Nightcrawler was SO good, I was super worried about how they were going to change him, and the dynamic between Rogue, Magneto, and Gambit was perfect. The sacrifice, the love, the expressions when Magneto was being bombarded and worried about Rogue and Gambit. That shit ruined me. SO good.
Logan showed real emotional maturity when Jean kissed him like that, we all remember the time in the "Till Death Do Us Part." episode where Logan skipped the wedding because he was busy destroying robots that looked just like Scott. Logan conceding to Scott and recognizing that he and Jean are just meant to be shows that he's really grown as a character. All that soul searching in Japan must've done him some good.
This episode was really amazing, not sure when I last felt this much emotion when watching a series but magneto sayin 'Hab keine angst' and rouge 'I can't feel you' were a real gut punch
I love how they made it look like Death of Superman at the end with Lois holding superman… The writers know how to give a subconscious gut punch. Str8 up brilliant
This was peak storytelling easily the best episode so far in the series had me shook to the core holy smokes this literally the xmen version of the red wedding its clanged everything.
A lot of people forget Gambit is an omega level mutant but he had mister sinister lobotomize him so that his power wouldn't spin out of control..in an alternate universe he's one of the more powerful entities in existence
I think Magneto using the train as a whip is doubly significant, the Slavers in Genosha used whips to oppress Magnetos people, and the Nazis used trains to do the same, he is using one thing that was used to oppress him as another of the same to defend his people. its perfection.
I'm also, "not ok", This episode rocked me to my nostalgic core, in soo many ways. As an adult, this episode made me ugly cry. Having to watch Remy see the love of his life with another man, and then the end. 😭
holy shit. what an episode. of all the x-men franchise animations and live-action movies that exist, this episode tops all of them. my jaw was dropped for half the episode. this one hit hard
The fact that Sentinels even have heads or anything critical in that area makes no sense. It's like dressing up humans to be aliens on Star Trek. Painting another race onto the ruling one never looks good.
And the long shot, showing the kaiju form trampling a devasted city, is right out of the original 1954 Godzilla... which, in turn, was meant to reflect the devastation of a city getting atom-bomed.
The storyline I believe was E for Extinction. I think the end of this episode was based on that and not the Mutant Massacre. In E for Extinction the majority of the mutant population on Genosha is wiped out. The sentinels wipe out almost everyone and from the ashes of that event we got things like second mutations (Emma Frosts diamond form, etc) as well as an Excalibur series with a still alive Magneto trying to rebuild Genosha alongside Charles from the ruble, thus sparking the Magneto was right slogan and the whole Xorn storyline🤷🏻♂️
This was intense!! This gets Sacrifice and the struggle right!!! Especially when Magneto tells leech while holding off the blast, to not be afraid, was a tear jerker!!
I don't know what DeMayo did to get fired, but it must be something major because this series is just amazing. Hope he can reconciliate pn whatever he did and come back for S3.
@@mmaGambitu were in the writers room😅 to know that for sure? Why has he been getting sole writing credit these past few couple episodes if more ppl were involved in writing
@@luismedrano6680 he gets the credit because the scripts were 'assigned' to him (this is common practice on a lot of tv shows), doesn't mean other people didn't come up with important parts of the story or the dialogue.
Depned on what he has done. The rumor aboot his departure range from, artistic disagrement to being a toxic and abusive douchebag. If this the latter, then no he don't deserve to return, not at least after some therapy.
97 is really a masterpiece. I’ve cried twice (episode 2 and 5). Episode 5 was just so well done and gut wrenching. I’m hoping we get to see the Hickman resurrection protocols come to life.
There's definitely gonna be some Time-travel shenanigans to undo this, no way they kill off Three main characters for good like that all in one instance!
Well you could see a watcher in the sky before going into the party so i assume theres some sort of what if events at play here that may have split universes. Havj g 1 with the tragic sacrafices and 1 with cable arriving earlier and helping stop the sentinal
X-Men 97 is what super hero fans NEED right now, no fluff, no filler just straight powers and storytelling. The problem before was them releasing movies about characters no one cared about or their powers or lack thereof, were just boring. After Avengers everything changed or you could say after Stan Lee’s passing, but this series really gives me hope that Marvel can turn it out around as well with Deadpool 3. DC learn from this. Instead of spamming Batman shit, explore your other heroes and villains. Why was Swamp Thing a series and not a villain in a movie? DC just hires people who doesn’t read comics at all. They’re cooked at this rate, Marvel…we back! Here’s a suggestion: bring back Superman and Friends in this way, that would be a huge win. They won’t do it-
I just finished episodes 1-5 and omg it hit me right in my childhood and all the feels. I'm with you, I'm not ok right now. That last scene and ending music was gut wrenching.
I think the concept is Afrofuturism. You're not the only one fighting back tears at the end! In an animated series, it's easier to kill someone off, so the stakes are crazy high!
So can we reserve the writers to continue doing other Marvel projects going forward. This 5 weeks of storytelling is as good as the whole infinity saga of the MCU
I've missed the politically charged aspects of XMen in the MCU. it's nice to have it back, I've always related to this team more than others. it's nice to have hope for a better future, even when you know someone will hate you just for what you were born as. The original series helped me get though growing up as someone who was different and I'm hoping hoping it helps the next generation too :)
Best episode so far!!! Great writing! Love the little things like him throwing cards in the fire. You can really feel the connection between Remy and Rouge ❤
HOW DARE YOU NOT MAKE MORE INSIGHTFUL JEAN REFERENCES!! I thought the initial water scene was a callback to the end of X2 where Jean holds back to tidal wave from the burst dam. When she catches Scott and Maddie, she says "don't tell me, you can explain" which were the exact words she said when she walked in on Scott and Emma's psychic affair in the comics. Maddie saying her mind was elsewhere was also something Emma said early on in her affair with Scott. Lastly I gotta believe that the way Emma smirks is a reference to how the writers knew they were swapping her role in that character arc with Maddie. Thank you for coming to my tedtalk Edit: also wanna add that the way Nightcrawler saved Rogue and Gambit, and his injuries afterwards, reminded me of him teleporting Hope to Utopia before dying from having a hand jabbed into his back
This episode was hands down amazing! I love Gambit and never felt he got his just deserves, and this episode blew it out of the water! This is the Gambit the childhood me always wanted to see from a sly and smooth talker like Remy! every essence of what we imagine Gambit can be was given to us! Thank you writers and and everyone who was a part of this episode!
O-M-G...im a 41 year old woman from Latinamerica and have been an XMen fan since im 13...this was epic! An Emmy at least!!! Gambit have always been my fav! I literally just whatch it and had goosebumps all over! The german part of Magneto!!😢 the body of Remy 😢😢.
I think the Sentinel that showed up was a Sentinel from the future, The Tri-Sentinel! It would explain why Magneto couldn't control or break the sentinel with his powers.
The Wild Sentinel is not new, I just found out my self that it already exists from comics - reference New Xmen's E is for Extinction. They came from a Master Mold sited in an Ecuadorian jungle whose AI worked to improve and build sentinels by referencing everything in its vicinity.
I just stared at the screen in disbelief last night. I mean, I knew that Genosha was going to be wiped out. There was no question. I just…wasn’t expecting to see the city forged, established, and demolished all in a single episode. Then the deaths. Just….holy s***…
Why is it that every other episode of this show is doing it's best to tug on my heart strings and make me cry. My gf weeped the episode when Nathan was taken to the future to find a cure and become Josh Brolin lol
That last line Rogue says, “ I can’t feel you” has a double meaning referring to their argument earlier where she was complaining about not being able to touch him. At the end she could finally touch him but it didn’t matter because she couldn’t feel his life force meaning he’s died. Wow beautiful writing, you can tell Kevin Fiege put some time into this to make it right. Just like the Professor I trust in “Fiege ‘s vision”. Now I wonder does this mean we don’t get a live action Gambit? Or maybe we do but in an alternate universe? I’m am shook to my core! They are really switching up the team here no Professor, Storm lost her powers, now both Magneto and Gambit are gone! I know anything is possible in the world of Marvel but currently I wonder where this leaves things. I can’t wait for the next episode!
The first 25 minutes was like a telenovela. The last 5 minutes became The Red Wedding.
That s exactly how I felt.

@@WeaselFromNorth facts right there and we still have Bishop (and Cable) to help prevent this tragedy that occurring (again 😏)
This show has far exceeded my expectations. I am in love with it. Please do the same thing with the live action version. OG fans are here for it.
That Gambit sacrifice was legendary. “Remember it” That episode was crazy 🔥🔥
More than omega level. A true hero. RIP my favorite x-men Gambit.
I have never waited so much for a screencrush video
Same
Agreed
I know right???
Facts!
I was just gonna post the same thing!!! I kept hitting refresh on their channel.
I’ve been casually watching X-MEN 97 this season and this episode wrecked me.
OMG this episode broke me in all the right places. Without a doubt, the best episode of an animated show I’ve ever seen.
Magneto’s line about world leaders is one of the best things in this episode
Honestly, it is one of the best lines in general.
Absolutely, to respond to accusations of being a terrorist leader with “well all your leaders are terrorists” was hard af, such good writing in this episode
Was straight up about Joe and Bibi
he literally speaks in epic
@joe5923 Iran are Wahhabi not Muslim
Well they set up the adversary in EP 4 so we might end up going the route of the siege perilous to revive him, also to restore storms power
This was the craziest episode I’ve ever seen. My mouth was wide open and still is. I can’t believe what I saw
Also what's interesting is that Gambit actually assisted in the Morlock massacre in the comics and he saves the other survivors here.
21:16 “They shall be avenged” that gives me goosebumps. What a powerful setup to a powerful line
So glad to see gambit finally flex his powers to his full potential its such an interesting power set ,and he's always held himself back so seeing him go all out like that was so satisfying.
Technically that's not even his full potential. He's still scaled down
That wasn’t his full potential, but alright.
not even close, can't Remy bust planets and even stars at full potential? He has limitless power, though not limitless powers.
@drlca6601 If he was that powerful, then the sentinels would've detected him as an omega threat.
In the comic , he went to Mr sinister to dampen his power.
He is a omega level mutant. He can excite the molecules of stuff.
"I can't feel you" was also said by Wanda when she touched Vision's decommissioned body 😭
As a huge X-Men fan and a grown man, I admit I cried for this episode and I am not ashamed.
Same
😭😭
Same here
Dude, MAN UP!
😢😅👍
the fact that it took me this long until a Marvel animated show to make me feel something in a Marvel project blows my mind. what a greatly written episode
The moment Storm was cured I knew this would be the beginning of the end for the series. Getting a comeback to finish its story.
@@joe5923 way to ruin it. And this seems more permanent
The line from magneto on having no regrets about saving more people… given the many concentration camp imagery, could it be referring to a similar scene from Schlinder’s list, with the protagonist lamenting that he could have saved more
That last line just brought back feeling I had during WandaVision when Wanda finally got to see Vision’s body. I sobbed.
I literally got choked up when what happened happened, my daughter must've noticed a change cause she came running up to give me a hug lol
I am glad I was alone, not sure my wife would have understood.... of course I am still apologising for making her sit through X-Men: The Last Stand... so she might just see it as revenge
Gambit is my favorite, that ending was soul crushing
At least they let my dude go out like the badass he is.
Bro i was already having a shit day yesterdayyy😢 this episode made me so fucking sad, GAMBIT IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAV XMEN.
Same....
Same
Hope your day feels better bro 😢he will return pretty sure Gambit will come back unless they officially changed X-Men members soon😢
I caught that Conan O'Brien reference at 18:08. "In the Year Two-Thousaaaaand!"
I love when Doug sings that’s. It’s so good.
High five! 🙏
Wow, just wow, that was one of the best episodes of Marvel TV animation or live action I've ever seen.
Bravo Marvel, Bravo.
SO good.
Just seeing that half second in the intro with him and Gambit fighting back to back was really heart-racing.
Those close ups of Erik's eyes as he watched Rogue's are so haunting
One of the best episodes of anything animated ever…
Logan showed real emotional maturity when Jean kissed him like that, we all remember the time in the "Till Death Do Us Part." episode where Logan skipped the wedding because he was busy destroying robots that looked just like Scott. Logan conceding to Scott and recognizing that he and Jean are just meant to be shows that he's really grown as a character. All that soul searching in Japan must've done him some good.
This episode was really amazing, not sure when I last felt this much emotion when watching a series but magneto sayin 'Hab keine angst' and rouge 'I can't feel you' were a real gut punch
I love how they made it look like Death of Superman at the end with Lois holding superman…
The writers know how to give a subconscious gut punch. Str8 up brilliant
Commenting everywhere to say how awesome this episode was and this season 100% deserves Emmy nominations!!
I’m not okay either, Ryan. Damn, this episode was incredible
22:35 This kaiju Sentinel is based on Cassandra Nova's "Wild Master Mold" from the comics, from the triple-head to the creepy insectoid carapace
Never read it but I know tangentially of it, was coming to see if anyone else was going to point this out too.
@@dangerfly True, but they are merely man-made, and mankind be making humanoid-looking robots all the time in real life too
The storyline I believe was E for Extinction.
Especially when Magneto tells leech while holding off the blast, to not be afraid, was a tear jerker!!
man i teared up seeing magneto’s flashback to Auschwitz and his outburst & him comforting Leech in their final moments. wow this series was so good
I don't know what DeMayo did to get fired, but it must be something major because this series is just amazing. Hope he can reconciliate pn whatever he did and come back for S3.
You don't want him back lol season one was worked on with many people, his plans for the next two season are bad. So kinda of glad he is gone.
Probably this episode!
Depned on what he has done.
The rumor aboot his departure range from, artistic disagrement to being a toxic and abusive douchebag.
If this the latter, then no he don't deserve to return, not at least after some therapy.
Rogue's words to Remy reminded me of what Wanda said when she saw Vision in pieces, "I can't feel you."
Gambit stopped what magneto couldn’t….Omega!!
9:56 Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that was Blink, she’s always been my favorite
That entendre “I can’t feel you” 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
97 is really a masterpiece. I’ve cried twice (episode 2 and 5). Episode 5 was just so well done and gut wrenching. I’m hoping we get to see the Hickman resurrection protocols come to life.
Dude! The watcher thing blew my mind! So Happy for everyone that caught it.
Ikr, after I saw him I went back to check in every establishing shot for cameos
@@Jay-gq1mo I did the leo decaprio meme haha
There's definitely gonna be some Time-travel shenanigans to undo this, no way they kill off Three main characters for good like that all in one instance!
Yep. Cable was in this episode for a reason.
Main characters have been killed or died
Time travel
They are back like is never happening To begin with
Well you could see a watcher in the sky before going into the party so i assume theres some sort of what if events at play here that may have split universes. Havj g 1 with the tragic sacrafices and 1 with cable arriving earlier and helping stop the sentinal
Cable tried (didn't he say something like, not again?) but it looks liked he failed.
I think the time travel thing is going to fail, and this is a nexus event/fixed point in time that can’t be changed. That’s why the Watcher was there
X-Men 97 is what super hero fans NEED right now, no fluff, no filler just straight powers and storytelling.
Easily one of the best X-Men episodes ever. Had me in tears saying did that really happen again and again. I still can’t believe it happened.
I think the concept is Afrofuturism. You're not the only one fighting back tears at the end! In an animated series, it's easier to kill someone off, so the stakes are crazy high!
Delicious stakes! apparently the last two episodes are going to be even crazier
I just got done watching this episode and I’m still teary eyed.
The X-men '97 team are doing a phenomenal job with this!
So can we reserve the writers to continue doing other Marvel projects going forward. This 5 weeks of storytelling is as good as the whole infinity saga of the MCU
I just realized that the apple cost $10...the Roman numeral for ten is X
Admittedly a reach, but X'es do tend to be generously thrown around
👍
Also, who was it again that crucified Christ? Yep, the Romans.
@@joshstephens413
...tilt that cross, and we've got another x
OK, enough of that
I literally cried. Bravo to the team behind this episode.
None of us are okay Ryan... None of us are
I hope this truly makes this series take off and we see it get all the love it deserves
Thank you for coming to my tedtalk
Edit: also wanna add that the way Nightcrawler saved Rogue and Gambit, and his injuries afterwards, reminded me of him teleporting Hope to Utopia before dying from having a hand jabbed into his back
This is why X-Men is better in long form storytelling adaptations(tv and miniseries) than in movies.
Facts!
"The Name Is GAMBIT, REMEMBER IT" and with that, I will never forget this episode and they way a CARTOON was able to move me emotionally.
Bro that was an amazing episode cartoon none cartoon. The layers in this episode was crazy
💯
Not just that but he is usually considered one of the weaker X-Men, look at the power he mustered in this episode. A fitting end for his character.
Ryan is so not okay, that he forgot to mention your mom when he was naming the background characters
Justice for my boy Gambit ❤️
O-M-G...im a 41 year old woman from Latinamerica and have been an XMen fan since im 13...this was epic! An Emmy at least!!! Gambit have always been my fav! I literally just whatch it and had goosebumps all over! The german part of Magneto!!😢 the body of Remy 😢😢.
The high of the dance scene to the down of "I can't feel you" was like the worst gut punch ever.
U forgot what good comic book writing was.... not 2 1/2 hours of action but real storytelling with real consequences!
@@luckylogan7093it's so true
X-men 97 is the best thing marvel has done and it’s been back to back consistent. They need to give the animation team a raise.
That was alot. Emotional Damage.
