Logseq vs Obisidian | Which personal knowledge management app should I choose?

- Logseq and Obsidian are two heavyweights in the PKM / note-taking space.
To save you the time of watching this video if you're trying to figure out which one is for you, I don't have a definitive answer. Logseq remains my preference, but both applications are fantastic, and they can complement each other in various workflows.

- obsidian's performance is far better
- obsidian uses less custom format, it's basically standard markdown, so it can be easily viewed with any other markdown editor, while your notes in Logseq will almost become a mess in other editors.
Really helpful side by side comparison, thanks Dario. At first I found the relatively fixed structure of Logseq stultifying, but have come to appreciate its minimalism. Also, kudos for the Wonderboy gif at the end - quality.

Backend and Database:
- Obsidian is entirely file-based and does not require an additional database. It relies on the operating system's file system to store and manage notes.
- Logseq uses an internal database (based on Datascript, an in-memory database for JavaScript/Node.js) to manage links and other metadata. This database is generated and updated from the Markdown or Org files.
would love to see you and Alex Qwxlea doing another episode. You two's different approach has a bigger significance than differences between Logseq and Obsidian, IMHO.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to get hold of Alex since just after that video was published. He's also no longer active on the Discord forum and Twitter. Hope he's okay 😕
you can use command + up and down keys to rearrange bullets/ blocks within a file in Obsidian. To drag and drop to another file, triple click on the bullet you want to drag, then long press and drag it to the file you want to move it to.

Thanks for all your efforts. Your videos are very good and helpful. I find Logseq a bit awful (I disdain Electron apps in general) but I want to give it a try. I like the outline format because I never make any long notes, that's the only thing that appeals to me. I watch your other videos too, they're great!

I have not tried PDF annotation on my tablet.
The one thing i really miss in Obsidian is the drag and drop. I want the possibility to choose between outline and longform writing but i also really wanna use the graph view. I tried using both together but the different way they deal with markmind but especially aliases really made it impossible for me to feel comfortable with using both interchangeable.
The whole idea of mainly using daily notes also just doesn't work for me with uni cause at the end of the day I need one file that has all of my notes if there's an exam testing it. For meetings or other things where you don't need all of the information it's great though
I feel like there will eventually be a plugin that replicates the dragging and dropping - and Logseq may lose a lot of people as a result :)
The outliner plugin has been updated with the drag and drop function.
I mean tbh i don't really know but couldn't you just write your notes in Logseq and give it a link based on the subject the note is for and later when you'd be studying for an exam from that subject you'd just go to that link and see all of the notes you have taken so it would essentially act as having it all in one page ?
Very cool video! Makes me want to use Logseq, which I always fail to understand, again. There should be an onboarding The fact that youre able to do queries in Logseq kind of changes everything, I didn't know that.
About the "moving blocks" feature in Obsidian, there was a plugin doing it, but it's not working anymore, lots of people have reported the error but the owner of the repo doesn't answer. I love the outliner too..
I wonder why Obsidian doesn't implement this, knowing there are also the team behind Dynalit, that make not much sense to me, they should bridge into these 2 apps for the people who want both approaches. The fact that we can use Logseq in conjunction with Obsidian is amazing 🙂

I think that they will probably focus more on the Core outliner plugin going forward. That will prevent people from jumping ship.
I actually use both. Logseq, I find, is great for fleeting notes (especially when I'm in research mode), my activity log and my random thoughts... especially due to the block format. I then move over to Obsidian when I want to make those notes permanent (in a way that makes sense to me) and for my long-form writing.
I think that's a great approach to working with them both. I tend to use Obsidian only if I'm publishing something, but I can easily see how your approach would work well.

I kinda realised that gathering information and putting said info into my own words, were two separate tasks. So it made sense, to me, to have the two apps that best represent these different sides... if that makes sense?
Could you list out the obsidian plugins you have to make obsidian look like logseq? Especially the dive in mode (idk what it’s called) where you can focus on bulletpoint. I am a hybrid type thinker juggling between outliner and longform
Sure. Here are a few that might help:
- Outline
- Outliner (separate to above)
- Zoom
- Backlinks
- Outgoing links
- Strange new worlds
There is also a new plugin called Influx that aims to be a replacement for Obsidian’s linked references view that is more like Logseq’s: it shows context based on the nesting hierarchy of the backlinks. Excited to see this one develop as it’s something I feel Logseq makes far more useful currently.
One more: Hover Editor plugin might bridge the gap a little bit for Logseq users who miss the ability to directly edit inside linked references views and embeds. It’s not as seamless, but it’s a start.

Awesome video, thanks - I'm still hesitating, both the longform and outliner approaches have their own advantages and downsides... Why can't these two apps merged in some magic way?
Btw, can you tell us more about your interactive map system in Obsidian? E.g. which plugins do you use, how do you handle the note-to-map-pin process etc.

Glad it was helpful. I guess the best answer is to just use both, but that's a bit frustrating. I do 95% of writing work in Logseq, and only the final 5% in Obsidian when everything is ready to be polished.

Most of the time a statement contains „plug-in in Obsidian“ it actually doesn’t need a plug-in, e.g. Obsidian has daily notes and backlinks out of the box as well.
Perhaps a better framing would be more settings / toggles required...
I like this guy. And logseq is good, but I keep it only in case of an "apocalypse"

I started with Obsidian, but then moved to Logseq. It has much better scheduling abilities (closely modelled on Org mode). For example, I can schedule tasks / events in my Journal page, and have another page showing all scheduled tasks and events sorted by order of scheduling. I can do this in natural language with the nlp plugin, and have a date count-down, with the countdown plugin. As far as I know, Obsidian still hasn't got the ability to do this.
You can actually do this in Obsidian too. There's a Tasks plugin that allows you to add tasks on any note and you can query them from anywhere in your vault. The plugin also allows you to have a seperate scheduled and due dates.

Talking about plugins, another plugin which might help is the Agenda plugin. I haven't used it much recently, but it was pretty good the last time I used it.

Logseq and Obsidian can be used together, yes, but working in Obsidian on notes edited on Logseq, full of "collapsed::" metadata everywhere, is a massive pain in the a**.
Logseq does *not* use vanilla markdown, as opposed to Obsidian.
Also, Logseq is much slower with thousands of notes, unlike Obsidian.
Using both is just a waste of time and energy in my opinion.
@@ditchcomfort not at all u just need to use each for separate tasks. I love logseq but i think obsidian is slightly better overall. I do not operate them from the same vault. I have one vault for bullet notes for comp science(atm) and a daily note flow (logseq) and the rest of my larger notes like book summaries, readwise higlights, philosophy goes into obsidian. So obsidian is the main go, logseq is a utility. If logseq can improve its perfomance issues , which arent that bad, will be better

The PARA system is more conducive to a typical folders-based approach. There are two ways I think of doing it in Logseq though.
1. Namespaces
2. Page-properties.
Each of these will have trade-offs. At the moment, I'm tending towards using page properties to define what area or project something belongs to.
i.e. Project page
project:: [[Larger project]]
This is good for bottom up building. In reality I'm doing this in a number of different ways, but it's difficult to capture that all in text :)
Whats the alternative to PARA. Matt Giaro does not agree with a PARA system, but I have not found his alternative system. What alternative system to PARA would you suggest using Logseq??? Can you send me a link??? Thank you
I really love the look and feel of logseq, however, I always feel it’s so much more buggy than Obsidian, at least when I make some changes or to the CSS etc. Notes suddenly disappear… and I absolutely hate how the whole plugin stuff looks. Obsidian is much more streamlined in terms of all that. Nothing seems to look the same or whatever. That’s why I use Obsidian. Never have any issues with Obsidian. But I miss the block shit every time I start using Obsidian 😂 not to mention the implementation of tasks/queries.
I honestly thought the laggy experience was due to my crap laptop. Despite the performance though, vanilla logseq is much more feature complete than obsidian.
Gotta remember Logseq is open source and sill in beta while Obsidian has a paid team and are officially out of beta now. Give it time, I'm sure Logseq will get to where Obsidian is now.

Yeah, the plugin marketplace needs some work to be more streamlined. I think the development team is working on a more consistent UI for it though.

Both are interesting but I am missing the option of a free self-hosted sync-server, for me that is a key feature - I am sorry to say that, but 5/8 $/m is too expensive, especially if your data are stored on a foreign server.
$5 /month makes a lot of sense for me as I don't have the skillset to do it myself
Well i mean if you are okay with having your data stored on somebody elses server u can always do it for free by using one of the cloud platforms. And if you mind but are capable to self host it, then u can just self host your own solution like syncthing or something. It's just simple files and folders that you need to move around.
You can do all that in obsidian with plug-ins....just kidding. Great Video!

Why don't you like using plugins?
I prefer the feature set to be native so that I know it will always be supported. There are a few plugins whose developers are no longer active in the community, which is not ideal.
I think I'll try Logseq. I actually don't like plugins at all. I'm a graphic designer and all the softwares I use I like them as a native application.
Such an important point for a lot of people!
Okay, so Logseq is not for me because in addition to daily notes and daily/weekly todo lists, some of which by the way can be recurring and should be generated automatically when opening the note, I need to write down all kind of information and e.g troubleshooting documentation.
Too bad Obsidian is closed source :/

I cannot find a reason to have blocks rather than pages.
Personally, the power is in the speed of input and retrievability.
Blocks also allow for fluidly adding structure through outlines.
You lost me on the speed / performance part. The only reason why I moved to Obsidian is the performance. Good luck!

I don't know why is 2023, and Logseq can't yet delete unused assets.
